Sponsor Training Guide

edited February 2013 in Tips & Tricks
Unlike novice training, Sponsor training is overall simpler to do. In Novice training, you have to be aware of what each training item does for your dog, but as a Sponsor, you just need the basics.

To get started as a Sponsor Trainer, you need to do a few things at the beginning, before you train. First, you need to have a sponsor kennel with the training specialty chosen. Second, and this is critical, you have to have earned at least 100 fame by eventing dogs or making events. Once you have 100 or more fame, go to your management page, and click My Skills. Enter in 100 in the Dog Training box and click Add fame points. Then click set as title. *Important* Without 100 fame in dog training, you will NOT get the bonuses of having a training kennel and will remain at the level of novice training skills.

So now you have your sponsor training kennel with 100 fame in training. You are all set to train now. Here is the key difference between novice and sponsor training, when a novice trains only certain stats are increased, depending on what is being trained, while as a sponsor trainer, each training increases ALL stats, except aggro. Rough House is still the only way to increase aggro, whether you are sponsor or novice.

So now, here is how you train as a sponsor:

Skills:

Discipline: Groom until finished
Show: Sit to 5 points in the skill, then switch to Stay to finish.
Sport: Fetch to 5 points, then Retrieve until finish
Work: Object Identification to 20 points, then Wearing a Harness until finish

When training skills, always start with Discipline if it is chosen. If not, start with any skill that is meant to be filled to 100. Always do the skills that are going to be filled to 100 first, before you do the 3rd skill at 80 points. See my Novice Training guide for more details on skills and how to work them. ( <a href="http://virtualpups.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=45562"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://virtualpups.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=45562; ).

Stat max is done AFTER the skills have been completed. Usually, groom is used to get the dog stat maxed, however, if the dog needed aggro maxed to 200 or more, you should use Rough House to stat max the dog.

Most people who are breeding to improve the breed, do not worry about getting skills as the dog will not be evented, only bred. For this you just use groom or Rough House to train the dog and do not worry about any other training items.

Common Terms:

280/200: a dog that is stat maxed to 200 in all stats with 100 in 2 skills and 80 in a third. (Aggro may or may not be at 200)

Long Groom/Breed Groom: A dog that in groomed to a certain age, usually close to the end of breeding ability or life expectancy. (Example: a dog that lives to 15, would be groomed to 11 yrs 6 months, which is near the end of breeding ability, while a dog that only lives to 8 yrs, would be groomed to 7 yrs or so, which is near the end of life expectancy)

RH: Rough House
FP: Friendly Play
Stat Max: Training a dog to 200 in all stats (aggro may or may not be at 200)
Aggro: Aggression
Raised Aggro: a groomed dog that was RH’ed for mood, so aggro is higher, but not maxed to 200
Maxed Aggro: Aggro has been maxed to 200
Capped Aggro: Aggro has been raised to 250, and will go no higher
Disc: Discipline
Work: Working Skill

Now you pretty much know all there is to know about sponsor training, but I will leave you with a few training examples, these are the type of thing you will see in notes if you are training for others:

100 disc/sport, 80 show, stat max, rh – This means train discipline skill to 100 with groom, train sport skill to 100, and then train show skill to 80. When the dog’s mood gets too low to train, you will use RH to boost the mood. When skills are done, you go back to groom until stat max, still using RH to boost mood

Groom to 11.6.0, rh – This means you will groom the dog until is it 11 yrs , 6 months, and 0 weeks old, using rh for mood boost. No skills will be trained other than disc, as groom automatically increases discipline.

Aggro to max, groom to 12 – This means you will RH the dog until agro is at 200, then switch to groom until the dog reaches age 12, using rh to boost mood when needed.

Those are just a few examples, just remember, if you are not sure what the owner wants done, do not do anything to the dog until you find out for sure. Also, if you are training to a certain age, watch that dog’s age very carefully, going over the age limit, even by just 1 week, could totally ruin that dog for the owner and make it unable to be used, depending on what the owner needs. And most times, dogs are not replaceable, especially if that dog is the result of a carefully planned breeding program.
