Dev Log 4 - Items and skills are working now

Hey stranger, it's been too long...

I know I haven't been posting as many updates as I originally intended, but I have been working on the next VP steadily.

You still won't be able to play the next version for a while, but here's an update on my progress:

What's done now:

- You can sign up, and immediately have a 'home kennel'.

- You can create dog imports.

- You can train a specific stat (currently only strength, agility, speed, and intelligence).

- There are skills for both players and dogs. All are hidden at first, but you can unlock them naturally as you play and do things.

- There is a store where you can buy items.

Items

You can buy items for VPC, or a sponsor for USD. There may or may not be other cash-only items in the future. Not sure yet. Maybe a sponsor just lets you access more VPC-only items? We'll see.

Some items can be used as training buttons.

For example, if you own the item "Weight Set Lvl 1", it becomes a button on the training page which costs more energy, but gives an increase to both the "strength" stat, and the "pull" skill. Doing so is one of the ways a dog can unlock the pull skill, which might come in handy for things like mushing.

Skills

Skills are similar to stats, but tend to be more specific. Every dog starts off with the same stats, but you have to unlock skills somehow. Certain breeds might naturally grant a skill, others you might get from items or other achievements.

Once you have a skill, you can build up your experience with it.

All stats and skills go from 0-100.

Having high experience in a skill can give bonuses in specific events and jobs.

I don't want to mislead you. When you first see the next version, it won't be a polished gem. It'll be ugly, buggy, and missing features (like the current version).

But it will be a rock solid foundation on which I can work. I plan to play the game alongside you, keep talking to you, and keep improving it every day.

The Breed Stats page very much needs people to help out and fill in some information. The end column is for the highest star the breed has reached, although thinks all can reach 10s now.

Introduction

So you’ve acquired a pooch and want to see what it can do in the event ring but where to start? Well this basic event guide from the game's actual help files has some basic information. To expand upon that I decided to make my own guide. I’ve spent much of my time on VP either competing in the event ring or working on breeding lines to produce quality canines for eventing. So without further ado, I present Para’s Eventing Overview:

Glossary

Stats: the 10 characteristics a dog displays: friendly, aggression, adaptability, loyalty, courage, hyper, strength, endurance, intelligence, and speed.

Skills: the four areas a dog can be trained in: discipline, work, sport, show.

Stat maxed: all stats trained to 200 with the exception of aggression and sometimes loyalty.

Skill maxed: having two skills at 100 and one the option of a 3rd at 80 (total a dog can only have 280 in trained skills and there are 4 skills: discipline, working, showmanship and sporting)

Fully trained: a dog is considered to be fully trained when it is both skill and stat maxed by a profession sponsor trainer.

Event Classes

Showmanship: conformation, showmanship, and obedience

Working: assistance, tracking, herding, cattle herding, schutzhund, search and rescue, weight pull, mushing, and obedience

Sporting: field retrieve, agility, racing, flyball, canine disc, dock Jump, hunting, and obedience

Birth/Base/Trained Stats

There are roughly 3 types of stats.

Birth stats are considered to be the stats inside the (parentheses) that are always visible. These stats never change and give you an idea of what type of natural/birth ability the dog has. Some events score heavily on particular birth stats. These stats are what the stars next to each stat are based on.

Base Stats are considered to be the untrained stats a dog is born with. These stats can increase (some can decrease) with training. If you want to remember where these stats started at, make a note because as you train they will change.

Trained stats are the final numbers after a dog has been fully trained, which means skill and stat maxed by a professional trainer. Most stats reach their limit at 200 with a few that can go higher. Aggression stops at 250 while loyalty, adaptability and courage can continue to rise. Also aggression can drop very low and get into the negative numbers.

Training

A dog that’s been fully trained (defined in glossary above) by a professional sponsor trainer is needed to seriously compete in events. While events don't score solely on trained stats and skills they do make a BIG difference! Furthermore, dogs also need to be trained properly for the type of event they are competing in.

For example a player entering a racing event with a high birth speed Greyhound should NOT beat a lower birth speed Greyhound IF it hasn't been fully trained. Likewise, a high birth speed Greyhound that's fully trained in working events is not properly trained for racing, a sporting event, and again should NOT beat a lower speed but properly trained dog.

Skills and Stats

Dogs will be trained differently in skills, and certain stats depending on what event(s) it will be entered in. Events all score differently so depending on how specific and specialized you want to be with your dog training can be customized. Below will be the most popular way to train a dog that can be used in various events belonging to the same class.

Showmanship: 100 in discipline, 100 in showmanship and optional 80 in working or sporting with low aggression (below 50)

Sporting: 100 in discipline, 100 in sporting and optional 80 in working or showmanship with high aggro (200-250)

Working: 100 in discipline, 100 in working and optional 80 in sporting or showmanship. Aggression is dependent on which working events you plan to compete in. Most require lower aggression with a couple (mushing and weight pull) usually have higher aggression dogs.

Scoring

Events score both on birth and trained stats and always score or penalize trained skills. Events will also score on a dog's overall condition, mood, energy level, and sometimes their grooming. Events each have a set criteria for what they judge. Many score very heavily on certain stats. Examples are speed for racing and strength for weight pull. Others may penalize certain stats, such as a penalty for aggression in herding events.

Breed Bonuses

A few specific events do give a bonus to dogs of certain breeds. Known breed bonuses are as followed. Greyhounds in racing, Mastiffs in weight pull, and it is said dogs that have it in their blood to withstand frigid cold and snow get a bonus in mushing.

Dev log 3 - Time travelling virtual pups

So here's the situation.

TLDR, it's a cat-tastrophe.

I couple hours ago I installed a monitoring tool. It seemed to be stable and well known, so I didn't expect anything bad to come of it.

During the installation process, it deleted the database.

And so I started the joyous process of restoring a backup. But the automated backups were like "Jokes on you, these backups are invalid. #YOLO!"

When I first came here I decided to play it safe and take a manual backup of the entire site (database, code, everything). It works... and it's from April 8th.

What this means is that all the work everyone has done for the last month is gone forever. Every dog, every training, everything. Lost into the void. I still have a paypal record of all the sponsorships, so I think I can manually add those back.

I feel like throwing up.

I just wanted to let you know what's going on, and hopefully together we can figure out how to move forward.

How can I make this up to you?

I wasn't expecting so much understanding and support from the community on discord. You guys are so awesome!

The site has been restored to it's state a month ago. A time before dev logs 1 and 2. A time before mutants overrunning the site, and a time when ghosts were still hiding. We've messed with the time line. Hopefully this time will be even better

I've already restored most (or all?) of the code fixes I've made, and manually re-added stuff that people have paid for.

There's a million things for me to try to keep track of, so I'm relying on you to remind me when I miss something.

If you paid for anything in the last month

If you have a pro kennel, you should be able to click "change specialty" (ignore the blue button).
If it gives you an error that the kennel isn't pro, let me know personally and I can fix it for you

If I promised you some extra imports because of a bug, let me know and I can add that.

If there were any other fixes or changes you remember me doing which aren't working now, let me know.

Is ANYONE that fixes bugs online AT ALL anymore?

I haven't been able to play AT ALL in 1 month and no one has responded to my tickets. This month is my 6 month renewal like clockwork and it has been paid. I have never had this issue in the year and a half that I have played this game. If this issue isn't fixed in like two weeks I think I will actually quit playing possibly for forever. What's the point in paying for this game if I can't play it?

All my kennels are frozen after my spons expired. Not a single one is active - I've gone through to make one active, and it works for a moment. But when I leave the page, it deactivates the kennel again.

I've successfully gotten into all 3 of my kennels but I can't seem to stay in any of them.

also I have 2 dogs that look like they have been retired but are still lingering in a kennel. what can I do about that

Hello all!

So as this place seems to be a dead zone the last couple years there are thousands of dogs rotting away in old and abandon kennels. I Have played this game since I was a kid but never really got into the Perfecting of lines, events, or anything of the like. My main focus from day one has always been rescue the dogs train up the good ones and sell them. I have not had a dog bought from me in almost 4 years... So I do have both a rescue and a training kennel. My goal from now on is rescue and release.

I have set a few rules for my self:

-Rescue all dogs!

-Release only breeds that have over 100 in them.

-Release all COMPLETELY untrained dogs over 8 months

-Release dogs with crappy stats. 0x4's - 3x4's for breeds that have not reached 10x4; and 5x4 and under for those that have.

I will probably add a few more parameters when I get to the releasing part of it as I have not decided yet if I will sort through and let pregnant dogs have the pups or not yet. I am not doing it for the money because at this point there is no use or point of VP Cash. I am not doing it for the glory as there are probably a lot of experienced players that would disagree. But I am still putting this out there as public knowledge because if and hopefully when we get Virtual Pups up and running (hopefully with the old codes or something similar), we can have a cleaner start and space.

IF you see this post and noticed that I have dogs that are yours and you wish for them back they are yours 100% free. If they are good dogs and I rescued them I will be putting them in a separate kennel and there they will sit until this game dies completely or we vamp it up again. They will be safe as I log on every couple weeks so they are welcome to stay free of charge as long as they like. I will put dogs up for sale when and only when this game picks up if I rescue it from this point on.

If you would like to join me any effort is appreciated in cleaning the kennels of VP

Pro Kennel is gone

I should have 6 more months on my sponsorship, and my account shows that my sponsor expires 8/22/16, but none of my kennels are pro and it won't let me change them. Does anyone know how to fix this? I put in a bug report one week ago, after waiting a little over week trying to fix it myself, so now I'm looking at 3 weeks of having a sponsorship but no pro kennel. Any ideas of what to do?

Boarding & Eventing Question

So I'm trying to get a new system for eventing down since things are a little different on the new version. On the old version I would just board my dogs between eventing and since they didn't actually leave my kennel I could just search my kennel for the breeds/dogs I needed and take out as needed. Well this got me thinking about boarding kennels and eventing. Does the fact that our dogs actually leave our kennels and go to the boarding kennel effect the event scores? I ask this because as an event kennel I have 100 skill points in handling which effect event scores. If the dog leaves my kennel and is in a boarding kennel while the event runs and that kennel doesn't have 100 in the handling skill will that effect the dog's event score?
