I. Hate. My. Hair.

edited August 2013 in Vent
For the majority of my life I've had completely straight hair. And I mean seriously straight, as in straighteners were jealous of how my hair just naturally was and it took half a can of hair spray to keep curls in. Well, the last two years my hair has decided it's going to be curly, and its only gotten worse. Oh, and to make matters worse it also decided to go a bit red. I have long hair, so in the beginning of my hair starting its ridiculous escapade I'd end up with one side curly and the other kind of somewhere in between curly and wavy. I live where it's humid, so frizzing has become the bane of my existence along with psycho curls which sometimes aren't curls and do some crazy fuzzball knot looking thing. I've tried a variety of shampoos, conditioners and products to no avail. Brushing my hair is a nightmare, and I've gotten to the point that if it's looking bad after it's dried so be it. Otherwise I look like <a href="http://www.funnydogsite.com/pictures/Fluffy_Dog.htm"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">this, no joke. I have absolutely no idea how to handle the mess that resides on the top of my head and as I'm aiming to not look like something the cat dragged in, I'm at a loss. Yay for fine, crazy, red tinted hair that leaves me feeling like a cross between Merida from Brave and a labradoodle!
Granted, I'm nowhere near that Ginger but still :/

 • Why people have issues with ginger/red hair I'll never understand :|

It sounds like I had a similar experience to you, minus the straight hair bit, my hair has always been undecided on whether it's curly, wavy or somewhat straight. Last year my hair grew down to my hips and I was constantly sick of how much effort it was just to get it up in a pony tail that I chopped it off to shoulder length.
It did nothing.
Still have undecided hair that takes the same amount of effort, if not more, to do anything with :(
So pretty much it lives in a bun. Hooray for buns!

Plaits/braids are really good for every single type of hair and there are so many styles these days that you can be constantly switching it up each day :)
It's not that I mind it being red, it's just that it draws more attention if that makes any sense. I've tried braiding it but that only half works because my hair will start curling out of the braid >.< I was just particularly irritated because I was headed out to dinner and the combo of crazy curl/frizz & red got me quite a few looks as all I could think was "yes, yes I am having a bad hair year, thank you for noticing" xD Feel a bit silly now actually, but I suppose I'm not the first to get upset over something random and wonder about it later.

 • Not knowing exactly what your texture is, back in the '80s when curly hair was all the rage, this is how we kept permed hair from frizzing out more than what we teased it and to refresh it..

Get a spray bottle and fill with 1 part conditioner and 3 parts water. Wash and condition the hair like normal, then spray the hair down with the "leave-in conditioner" as you <a href="http://www.cachebeauty.com/afro_pik_black.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">pick it out then (never brush or comb) put mousse from the ends of the hair up. If it starts getting frizzy, spray it down lightly and use fingers to work it back in. If it starts going flat, spray it and scrunch from the bottom.
I've seemed to notice with people that if you dye your hair any shade of red, it's beautiful, but if it's natural, it's deemed gross.
There was a time when I was in highschool where it was a fad to tease to people with red/ginger hair, calling them 'rangas' short for orangutans. So many people dyed their hair to neutral colours just to escape the bullying and it just irritated the crap out of me. One day I overheard a younger girl say "I don't get why rangas whinge about being teased, if they don't like it they should just dye their hair", she was very embarrassed when she turned around and saw my friend and I, both 'rangas', giving her absolutely filthy looks.
That fad is over now but I still know people who won't go back to their natural red hair because of what happened.

Anyway, you should embrace your hair and make it work for you. There are very few people who will admit that they are 100% happy with their hair and those people have probably learnt to stuff what people think about it.
 • I know the feeling of the curly hair not knowing what it wants to do. I have found that if I am going to brush my hair it is done while it is wet in the shower, when I curl(I know why would a curly girl curl her hair) or straighten it I take small sections and comb them out and do what I need to with them. Also with curly hair its not good to use a ton of product in it and shampoos can be very harsh and do more damage to your hair then good. I have found that the best shampoos are made specifically for curly/wavy hair and it all depends on what you are looking for to see what is right for you. My favorite right now is called Deva Curl and is wonderful my hair hasn't been happier and more willing to do things and not get into a tangled mess.
 • My hair colornis brown but it does s7milar things ,especially when its damp its gotten to the point where im choppingboutvlarge chunks the size of my palm that have curled so badly theyve become knots i cant comb out, the strange thing is its straight at the sides it just frizzes up super bad at the back, ive discovered beanies solve most problems...heh. as for the red haired thing, i never got why people tease people for thathair color, my brother has blondish red hair and i never got the problem people have about that color, seriously whats the problem anyway its not like hair color someone else was born with even effects them ,then again people always seem to search for something to make fun of >:(

 • My hair grows outwards so much before it grows downwards... and it used to frizz sooo bad so i know your feeling :)

If you blow dry your hair STOP! If you towel dry your hair STOP! Put a towel over your hair and make it into a hair wrap, leave it for about 30mins - 1hr then leave it to dry naturally. That just helps control my hair a little.

Also I use Herbal Essences for the knots and Aussie shampoo for frizz, cleanliness and stuff like that. Both shampoos work really well to keep my hair looking nice. I also have naturally greasy hair, like unless i use them shampoos its greasy as soon as its dry from having a shower :O

Also if your getting knots out, start by running your hands through the knots and getting as many as you can and then use a wide tooth comb to get the rest out. After that you can brush normally.

Another tip is if you have very thick hair get it thinned out regularly by the hairdresser (i use special thinning scissors instead of going to the hairdressers lol) but that kinda helps keep extreme tangles out.

And try not to use straighteners and curlers like all the time cause that makes your hair frizzy and horrible... or at least it does with me and most people i see who use them everyday

 • Thank you everyone for your advice and support! Back in high school they started calling me Ariel etc and because I have a quirky personality, I went looking just like Ariel for my senior prom. People didn't really know what to say after that xD

Bama -
I'll definitely have to give this a try! I've used leave in conditioner before, but I never really thought about the fact that I could use it to manage my frizz.

Clozo -
I really appreciate the advice and encouragement. It may seem odd, but hearing it from someone else other than your mother is nice. I'm tall, at least compared to the people here, and I've been that way since middle school, on top of moving into a small town where everybody has know everybody forever. I quickly learned the best way to deal with people is to ignore or have an "and your point is?" attitude about it all. Looks like I'll just have to figure out how to embrace my crazy hair just like I had to my size ^^

WyldFire -
I don't find it weird at all! I know that for special occasions I'll curl mine up. It's how I attempt to make it look the way I want, from Kathrine Hepburn to Veronica Lake haha I only use shampoos for curly hair, but I'm having trouble finding one that really works. I'll definitely look into that one :D

Ivy -
Four words; baseball caps and ponytails. I recently helped my mother move and then I myself moved from the east coast to Kansas for school and honest to goodness they became my saving grace. Beanies are definitely cuter though! I've actually never worn one myself, but again something for the days I can't be bothered or it's just that bad :P

Tiger -
I never dry my hair unless I absolutely have to for that reason lol Thanks for the towel tip though, I would have never thought of it! I need to go buy a new comb, since mine apparently got eaten by gremlins in the moves. I actually have extremely fine hair, baby fine actually so that's not really a problem. My cousin has mega thick hair and we both stretch our hair ties out the same; hers will maybe wrap around twice where as mine goes 4-6 times depending on how old/big it is lol

The whole towel tip is kinda one of my moms she always did it to her hair and mine when i was younger. I found out recently that if you towel dry your hair (like rub it dry with the towel) it gives you split ends, which then doesn't help with frizz lol and lucky you with the non thick hair :) mine wrap around like 2 or 3 times but i hate having my hair up lol

I never go anywhere without at least one beanie ,i carry spares usually in an assortment of colors depending on my moods and outfits ,during high school i used to be called beanie ,hat chick etc (those were the ones that werent insults) since i always wore a hat and was the only eprson who was allowed to since they were against the dress code (yup i managed to charm my way into wearing a beanie year round) it got to the point qhere people would guess why i wore it and everytime i got asked why i wore it (and that was usually 4-5 times a day) idd say something random like i was actually controlled by a really small alien who lived under it. Anyways not to sidetrack to much, hats are the best acessory to cover up hair with ,cant wear pontails though they just dont sit right on my head.

 • Mine has done the exact same thing XD It was stick straight until I hit 12 or so, now it can't really make it's mind up what it wants to be... some days it dries almost straight, then wavy, then super curly... Currently half of it is barely wavy, the other side is tight spiral curls  I've recently found <a href="http://www.pantene.com/en-US/hair-care-products/product/Co-Wash-Cleansing-Conditioner.aspx?UPC=080878172634"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">this, which helps quite a bit, at least as far as frizz goes.
