My sanity

edited August 2013 in Vent
Some people on here know I work at a gas station. Which like all customer service jobs brings in all kinds no matter what time of day you work. But today we had our polar pop station go down (Basically fountain pops). Our boss even came running in on her day off to try and help fix it. We ended up putting three large signs on the machine reading 'Sorry out of order' On it. And people kept asking if it was really down and not working so I made a new sign that said 'Sorry for any inconvenience, the polar pop machine is out of order.' and hung this on the machine at eye level so that everyone could read it. And understand it was down there was nothing on it working.

It took 20 minutes for me to be proven wrong when someone tried to get ice then snapped on me because no ice dispensed despite three out of service signs and one stating the whole machine was down. So to try and stop people from abusing the poor broken machine I placed two more out of service signs on the ice dispensers. Thinking clearly they could see nothing on this machine was working. I was once again proven wrong when people tried to use the machine covered in five out of service signs and one stating that it was not working. Then came up to tell me what I already knew that the machine was out of service. By the end of my 9 hr shift i was torn between beating my own head in and getting evil joy out of telling people I was sorry about something beyond my control but if they wanted one still they could drive across town to get one. And seeing them scowl at me while I smiled happily knowing I just annoyed them as much as they did me. I think I lost what little bit of sanity I had today and all I did was ring up customers and trying to fix what I could with my co-worker.

 • I'm coming up on a year... But I spent several months of that working the midnight shift and dealing with the weird ones that brought in. This whole incident was just wow... I had gotten over the fact a lot of the teenage customers couldn't seem to count change to save their lives.

 • I know what you mean about the weirdos lol. I've seen my fair share of them come in. I worked at a little one in a small country town. We also was a deli and restaurant so there was a lot to put up with on top of the usual gas and customer issues. I was a night shift manager and sometimes it was a nightmare for sure.
 • I work in a clothing store and I see that as well. We have a line for regular checkout's and a line for customer service (returns, exchanges, layaways, etc.). There are 4 giant signs labeling these, but people seriously can't read i think. Every day people get in the wrong line. We will ask them how we can help them and then direct them to the right line. The regular checkout cashiers can not do the customer service on those registers-they aren't set up for that. But seriously, people come to my line and say "I have a return" to which I say "I'm sorry but returns have to be done on the other registers." Most of them are frustrated, but don't say anything. However, one day, a lady proceeded to tell me that it was my fault because we didn't have a sign saying that returns had to be at the other registers. I just let it go, but I was like, seriously-we have 4 GIANT ones.
 • Customers not being able to read signs make my day, not.
I could spend hours and hours ranting about all the stuff I've seen in my 3yrs of being a cashier at a big supermarket, I even thought about writing a sarcastic book about all the cliche things customers do/say.

Customer: "Oh I only came in for one thing!"
Me: -grimace- "Always the way!"

Retail sucks, honestly don't know how people like doing it.
 • Honestly I don't mind doing it. It actually differs day to day than a factory does. It just boggles my mind the lack of common sense from some people. I admit I don't read every sign I come across but I at least pay attention to my surroundings enough to know whats going on.

Oh I'd help you on that book. I have real winners from when I worked for the cable company. And some of them are about sales rep's who sold to elderly customers just for a sale and lied to them telling them their tv wouldn't work without a specific piece of equipment.

 • haha dealing with customers can be annoying, I volunteer in a Shop mobility store (we rent out mobility scooters and wheelchairs, and sell cleaned recycled walking sticks and other random things). Now we haven't fully got signs up stating that you rent the wheelchairs and such, but we handed a bunch load of flyers out, and it says on the sign outside the shop that we only rent scooters. Even when we handed out the flyers people where like "oh are you selling them" and we are like nope... and then they get all annoyed and its like do you see a sign stating a price? I'm sure if they were for sale they would have a price label on like everything else we have on sale. I mean all the recycled stuff has like MASSIVE labels stating how much they are (they are like A4 sized), and then the one electric wheelchair we do have for sale has a price label. Luckily the shop manager has decided to put a sign inside the shop to say "To rent" lets just hope people pay attention.

But the shop manager has so much other work to do, since the company is slightly stupid and is like "Oh the receptionist in the offices (which deals with handy man services and other stuff) can run the shop, and do her receptionist work, and do all the paperwork, and accounting, and open a shop 2days a week" without extra pay... Stupid business.

Sorry about ranting on... but it just kinda bugs me
