I paid a lot for you, why are you failing?

Okay, so my iPod touch 4th generation of roughly two years has begun to fail. The home button on it no longer registers, at all. It is just loose. I have a feeling it either got disconnected or something is in there blocking it. I know it's getting up there in age (electronic wise), and I'll tell you right now it is well-loved. I don't think it has had a day where I didn't use it for something. Which is probably why the home button no longer works. I eat with it, I take it on vacation so I gets bumped around, it comes outside, it's everywhere! It's just that I feel Apple should redesign that, as it seems like a common malfunction. Not to mention the money I spend for protective casing and screen protectors in an effort to prevent things like this. An new one is roughly two hundred dollars, which isn't money I exactly have on hand.

Upon googling this, it seems very common, though there is no certain fix. It can always be opened up and you can fuss with the home button, but that seems to be more for stuck ones. The Apple store can fix it, but it is roughly a 150 dollar repair. Again, not paying that much! I expect this one to last without outrageous costing repairs. For that much I can basically go get a brand spanking new one.

My mom seemed to be for just getting a brand new one, but after Christmas when people have given me money as a gift. XD My problem with that is that the iPod 5th generation is right around the corner, rumored to be released in September. Which would be great, get the newest model! But what if it doesn't? What if it comes out after Christmas? Then I'll have bought myself another 4th generation when I could've just waited a month or so and gotten the new one. I just don't know what to do. Opinions?

 • Never buy the newest cool thing right after it comes out, that's just asking for trouble. >< Thanks to my technophile husband, I have learned to wait until 4-5 months after release to Google all the known defects of something before making a decision. :| For now I'd suggest repairing your current one, or going to Gamestop and getting a cheapie refurbished one ($50-$60 for an 8gb where I live) to last you until you buy a new one.

 • Normally I'd agree with not getting the brand new thing right away, but Apple seems to do well with their new products, and will repair/replace them for free within the first year under Apple Care, which is usually free for the first year also. I'd say wait and get the 5 when it comes out, I got the iPhone 4 right after the 4S came out just because it was cheaper, but I am really looking forward to the iPhone 5, and will probably drop the full price just to have it when it comes out. My boyfriend has a 4 year old iPhone 3S and is holding out for the 5.

 • Normally I would want reviews on an electronic before I bought it, but kind of like Sea Oats said, Apple is pretty reliable. And still, it is highly unlikely I'd preorder one, so I probably would catch wind of what people are saying about it before I ran out and got it. I bought my current iPod completely blind, and it has been terrific except for the battery life and now the Home button, though that seems common with every iPod/iPhone. Buying a refurbished one is a great idea, though! I wish I hadn't just blown my money on fancy sunglasses. XD

I find it amusing how they didn't make the 4S the iPhone 5. People would've been perfectly happy thinking the 4S was the 5. Your boyfriend is going to be really happy with the jump from 3S to the 5! Haha.
