Sushi is finally getting a doggeh!

edited August 2012 in General Discussion
Awesome news!!!! Sushi is finally getting her first doggeh!!!!!! I've been looking everyday in shelters and trying to find the right breed for me. I want a particularly small or medium size breed, which I think would best suit me.
Maybe I need some advice? This is my first dog so yeah...

Soooooooo I've been wanting...

A maltese
A Pembroke Welsh Corgi-is out!
A Yorkie
A Shih Tzu
A Pug-maybe!
A Cavalier King Chares Spaniel (They're all in different states  )-is out!

Any other suggestions? I'm really excited!
If only I can get a horse...

EDIT
I haven't had that much experience with many dogs, but I wouldn't like barky dogs (like watchdogs). Please tell meh if they are barky.
Thank you everybodeh.

  • Maltese! My dog is half but has the exact temperment of one. She's extremely loyal but not prissy at all! Theyre big dogs in little bodies!
  • Awwww cute! I want a dog that never leaves my side and friendly!!!! But yeah my friend has a maltese named Mocha (Mochi? I don't know) and she is super cute and friendly!
:P

  • Mine never leaves my side! She's terrified of thunder but she cares enough that she comes outside with me in the rain so i dont have to go out alone.
  • Awwww that's so sweet! Yeah thunder is scary :D
But Going out in the rain feels so good. 8)

  • YES! I forgot to tell you all that I sent an adoption application for a maltese/shih tzu.
They said that they have over 30 adoption applications for her. AHHH I'm probably not going to get her though. WAHHH
    SDHBLAH.png
  • Yeah, she is so cute too! She was rescued from an overcrowded shelter. Poor baby :(
    SDHBLAH.png
  • Be wary of the brachycephalic breeds. Their short faces cause a lot of breathing problems, and overheating can become a problem. Also, pugs tend to have eye-poppy-out issues, and that's nothing a new owner wants to deal with. :|
    2eldxsm.png
  • also corgis are not considered small dogs. They might be shorter but they are STILL herding dogs and super high energy. In general if you dont play with them almost constantly and give them a job they become pretty distructive. Not an easy dog for a first timer!
  • Also they are Stubborn (with a capital S) from what I understand xD
    2eldxsm.png
  • caviler king charles they are the sweetest but they can get FAT lol there beggars and little love monsters my pup only barks when the doorbell rings or sometimes shouting on tv lol

  • Corgis can be high-energy. I petsit a pair of them, and the female (who is younger) can be a handful. Adorable, but definitely needs her exercise and she in particular needs to be the center of attention. The male is an older gent with great manners.

Just remember that any breed of dog can be a rewarding and loyal companion, it just depends upon how much time and energy you have to devote to their training and such. :)
  • Oh my gosh, there's so much I didn't know!!!! AHHHH
I shall research more! :P
But yes, @Kazuko, pugs are definitely not my first priority. I think the Internet said that lots of dirt and bacteria gets trapped in those little wrinkles :( And thanks!!! Thanks to everyone also!!!!

And I hope everyone knows that I am NOT getting a certain breed because they are cute (but they are!). I am picking the breed judging from my lifestyle (except the corgi, that's a big oops!).

I will do my best to devote all the time that I can gather (and then some) to my new family member.

The only experience of a dog in my home and overnight, well I guess you can call it dogsitting, is wetnose's dog, THE BIG FLUFFY DOG!!!!
And he was very well-mannered as he always is. So a puppy will definitely be a new experience for me.

  • Cavaliers are also very expensive. What sort of budget are you looking at to spend on your puppy?
    2eldxsm.png

Hmm... Not that much, maybe about 400-500. Preferably lower than 400. How much are cavaliers usually?

WOW. Thats super expensive!! There's no way I can afford that PLUS toys, vet, food, etc. I can definitely afford 400 and Etc. Is Maltese expensive? I'm not buying it for show or anything. I just want it as a companion. And build up my responsibility.
    SDHBLAH.png
  • well my cav was purebred with winning parents etc so it got expensive but it all depends on parents etc bloodlines and stuff so some are 500$ and some are 5k it all depends on bloodlines and stuff

  • Unfortunately, for $400-$500, you will NOT find a Cav. In fact, you might not be able to find any of those breeds. I know rescues that adopt out Yorkies and Yorkie mixes for $450-$600. With a budget like that, your best bet is finding a breed rescue or just looking through Petfinder and other shelters. Most dogs from reputable breeders are in the $900+ range (and I say 'most').
    2eldxsm.png
  • Oh, yes, and I am looking through Petfinder everyday. I am looking for shelters, not breeders. But, a breeder would be nice. I am trying my best to avoid backyard breeders too. I borrowed a book from my cousin and it says almost everything about adopting a new dog whether it's a senior, an adult, or a puppy. The book is really heavy and helpful.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Keep it up!

  • I don't know much about the breeds you want, but I know petfinder is an amazing site and like always I would suggest a shelter animal (Because I always suggest shelter animals to people just looking for a companion ^.^) For the breeds you have listed I have noticed I can find for adoption for usually under $350 (might just be around my area of course).
But I wish you the best of luck finding your friend :)

Yeah, I agree and every animal deserves a second chance. I'm looking at Petfinder right now and no new dogs yet :(
But I understand that adopting a new dog undergoes many stages and I'm ready for that (Vent section might be filled up!)
But I think it's all worth it!

Where did you get your dog? It sounds like a bit much for a puppy that got sick. I know most of the best Border Collie breeders in the US are only 1-1.5k. I know Border Collies aren't the most expensive breed, but those are the international dogs that are known for going and winning worldwide events.
    liglw.jpg
  • Cavs are one of the more expensive breeds for some reason, Emme. I can't figure out why myself, buuut

If you aren't looking for a breeder, just use Petfinder and look for an animal that suits your family without worrying about breed. Some of the best dogs out there are mutts. Also, don't focus on breeds because of breed standards. I mean, yeah they are called 'standards' for a reason but every now and then you might find an animal that is the exact opposite. :| Like my border collie/German shepherd mix. Laziest. Dog. Ever. Super quiet. Doesn't like to run for too long. Can't focus to save her life. But I got lucky. I think of breed standards more as "worst case scenarios" that way you know what you MIGHT get into. xD

What are you looking for in a dog? Small size I get. What energy level? How often do you want to groom it? What sort of trainability are you looking for? Do you want an independent dog capable of doing its own thing, or do you want a dog that shadows you and never leaves you alone? Do you want a dog that's good with children? How about with other small animals? These are all questions you should ask before even thinking about specific breeds.

  • Maltese are great dogs. Mine rarely leaves my side and he is a big sweetheart. He can get a bit too protective over me though. If someone comes to our house when I'm home he barks at them for like 3 mins then stops, but if I'm not home he just lays there a rock, even if someone comes to visit. But over all he is super sweet and my best bud!
