School Lunches?

Well, before I explain.. I'm going to have a mini vent. My school's lunch is horrible.. their beef reminds me of dog food, as it is cubed if you look closely, the cheese on their pizza is a "cheese substitute" (*shudders*), and their vegetables remind me of rubber. -_- Yup, and they call that healthy. It isn't cheap, either, and I barely pick at it. Just bring lunch, you say? I barely get everything done in the morning as is, forget make my lunch. XD

So, now that that's over, in my Language Arts class, we are going to be working on an Argumentative piece. The piece will be arguing something that we would like to see done/changed in the school. When we are finished with them, they will be sent to the administration. Obviously, I have chosen the lunches, as have many other kids. I guess it's not just me who is starving. I'm going to need a couple "warrants" on school lunches. For those of you who do not know what a warrant is, it is basically state-the-obvious information that makes your argument stronger. I cannot, for the life of me, come up with any obvious information on school lunches that helps my case. Therefore, I am turning to you, VP, for warrant ideas, or even your own claims about lunch.

  • My school lunches are completely icky D: (and that's the only word that I can think of to describe them.) There was a stew about a year back, which contained white meat, as well as meat so dark that it was almost black in colour. To this day, I have never found out what it was, and it was thus deemed as 'mystery meat'. Another time, the menu stated that it was some sort of chicken thing, but had a sticker next to it saying 'contains pork' There's always a pasta option, but normally it's so over/under cooked that it turns to glue in your mouth xD To make things worse, I'm not even allowed to bring a substitute lunch in... [end own rant about school lunches]

I have not a clue about warrants, except that school is supposed to want you to be healthy, and work hard... And that's not going to happen if you don't eat well. You could do a survey about other student's views on the lunches? Well, that's my only idea xD

  • I agree with the survey that would back up your argument, also a point to make is "If we don't like it we won't eat it" and actually tell them it would be cheaper to make if they used proper vegetables from the grocers (they sound like they are using frozen if you ask me) and I'll think of more later, im quite good at making arguments

  • You might ask for the nutritional value of one of the lunch preparations, this should be public knowledge, though I'm not sure where you can get it. I'd start with asking the school vice principal or lunch room manager.

You might also talk to one of the "lunch ladies" about preparing the school lunch. Do they use frozen, how long do they cook it, who decides the menu, etc.

  • College food ftw xD I love my cafeterias lunches beside the price -_- So I usually get fries which are only like $2 if my parents gave me money for lunch I splurge and buy a wrap

  • @Woodpecker- There was pork in chicken? Ewie. That's a good idea, school is always telling us how we're suppose to eat healthier. A survey may work when it comes to backing up my warrants..

@Tiger- "If we don't like it, we won't eat it." That could definitely work! It is obvious, and can have some effect. Thanks!

@Bama- I've thought about that.. I agree that it should be public knowledge, and there have been quite a few times where I was wondering. The vice principal would be my best bet, the lunch room manager hides in his office most of the time.

@Wheaty- College food is amazing. XD I went to a college last year for a conference.. The lines were indredibly long, but the pizza I got was worth it.

  • You could always add that they should put the calories or nutritional value on the menu, and/or have a swap change where each day a different thing on the menu everyday or every week (my high school did that, after Jamie Oliver was getting healthy eating in schools)

At my high school there was more healthy options than unhealthy though they still had pizza some days. And then vending machines where filled with fruit instead of chocolate so if you have vending machines you should talk about implementing that if its not implemented all ready

  • I never ever buy lunch. Middle School food is gross. The "nacho cheese" hardens up after about 5 minutes, and the vegetable are rubbery, like you said. XD

Ew. XD

  • I've always found 'school lunches' and the whole 'cafeteria' deal really weird.
As an Australian, we don't have such things x]
99% of students bring their own lunch or starve xD Everyone eats outside too. (except for us seniors with our common room ;D)

Most schools here have a canteen that sells restricted stuff.
Government has made rules to ensure healthy school eating so all canteens can only sell things with certain nutrition requirements.
So, everything the canteen sells (hot food is limited to pies, sausage rolls, nuggets and occasionally flimsy burgers), has the nutrition information available if requested and can be found on the school website for the parents.
But yeah, we have no soft drink or anything deemed 'unhealthy' :[ Prices are a rip-off too.

er so Point of all that... we've been protesting against our canteen too xD
Ours is privately owned, so no money goes towards the school; canteen is its own business.
So technically... the school can't do anything about anything... untill the canteens contract comes under review again :P

So, push the nutrition point!
Also find out what rules and stuff they have to obey, and if possible, find out if they're breaking any!

Good luck! :3
  • I once found a caterpillar in my corn, at lunch. -_- When I told the lunch lady I want my four dollars back, she said no, that bug is more nutrition. -_- Totally disgusting.

Just adding my story in, go get um Frost! xD
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • Zyn that is completely disgusting, your not on 'Im a celebrity get me out of here' (i dont know if you have it where you guys live but they eat bugs to get food on that program)

Frost you should include what zyn said just to prove how disgusting lunches are

  • Ugh, high school lunches. Well, our hotdogs bounced if you dropped them on the tables or floor. The french fries tasted and smelled very egg-like. Our pizza had fake goat cheese, unless it was Friday. Fridays we had Domino's pizza.

The school had a pretty long boycott of cafeteria food after they tried raising the prices and just because the food was gross, period. My last year of high school we had a deli station where they made your sub however you wanted, three slushie machines with alternating flavors every day, and they got rid of the hotdogs. The egg fries stayed though

  • Food at my high school was really good!
So I can't really speak for that. lol.
How about making your lunch before you go to bed? Stick it in the fridge if you have to.
& I know my high school would let us leave campus & go get mcdonalds. or have pizza delivered. c:
