Horses!? -pics-

edited January 2012 in General Discussion
So....

my mom's friend's friend had one of their kids move back in because they had nowhere to go. Well, they brought 3 horses with them. Yes, three full size horses in the middle of a town. They don't have any barn just a small fenced back yard. Then, the kid takes off and leaves them with the three horses. The police were called and told them the could not do anything with the horses till 30 days or something. These are people that can't make enough to feed themselves. I am sure that they will try and feed them, but I don't even know if they know what to feed them. I live about a hour away, otherwise we would bring some hay up. I wish there was something I could do! My mom said we could go pick them up, but I only have $400 and she said I would be the one feeding them till they found a home. (how long would that last anyway?) At least we would have a dry barn with hay and water.

 • In most situations (I've encountered, anyway), the police weren't able to do anything for me. Since it is regarding horses, maybe someone could call animal control. I hope, in the meantime, they're are able to be cared for properly by someone. Where I live (and most places) large (especially hooved) animals can not be kept in small, "neighborhood like" yards.

I hope the horses and family gets taken care of properly.^^

I thought the same thing but the police were there, saw the horses and did not do anything. Animal control- I don't think so. I called them up about a stray dog and they wanted me to pay a fee to have them take it.

 • I hate to say this, but the police ("standard" ones, anyway) usually don't do much. That's why they have animal cops or animal control. Hopefully someone else will be able to get someone to take them. I've never had to pay fees, maybe it's different here, but I didn't know they made you do that. I kind of thought of it as a public service. But, I'm sure it's different from place to place.
 • Maybe try a horse rescue near where they live? Even if they can't take the horses they might be able to help with food and water and clean up.

 • Call around to some of the stables. There might be some around willing to take in a rescue project.
 • Do you have a local SPCA Humane Society? If they have room, I'm sure they'd possibly be willing to take them in. That's always my family's number one back up. Another thing you could do is look around for someone who would take them in, like Vampy said. :)
 • I went and saw them today, I will post pics when I get back. The horses were sweet. One of their dogs got out and ripped ones leg open. They did have a vet come (I am not sure how). I'm not even in high school yet so any of the rescue places compleatly ignore me. They said the horses were probably fine. But when I asked the people with the horses what they were feeding them, they said they were just useing the grain that the owner of the horse left them with.

 • That sounds terrible, the poor things. D: Horses aren't meant to be backyard city pets, what on earth were they thinking?

Unfortunately, 400$ on three horses would not last very long. But it's sweet you're so interested in their well being. Like other people have said, look up some barns nearby, or a Humane Society-like place that'll take equines. You can have your parents or guardians call.
