Moving to California.

Reasons:

1.) One of my Best Friends (Lukari 'from here' aka Lulu) is moving there in a few years to attend school/work there.
2.) It's got amazing art schools I could study photography and digital design possibly even coding.
3.) WAY more job options than the small town I live in.
4.) I know a few people that live out there already.
5.) I already know a job I want to apply for.
6.) I want to do something different than my family. I don't wanna settle down in a small town like this where there is nothing and our version of "fun" is to go play in the mud and ride backroads with loud music. Don't get me wrong. I love those things. The country will always be my life and my heart will always belong to this town and state, but I want something different for myself.
7.) I'm ready to be reckless for once in my life. I want to take a chance and just let fate show me what's in store for me. If it doesn't work out, I can always come back home. I want to be something in life. Not just a "Backroads photographer" taking pictures of just anyone that wants pictures done. I want to be somewhere that I work day after day doing something I love and have a secure job that I know will be there when I wake up the next morning. Not just sitting around HOPING someone will want me to take pictures of them that day..

  • Just keep in mind that living in Cali can be very expensive, especially if you wish to attend school there meaning you would most likely have to live within a city.
I too was thinking of going to California for school but after adding up out-of-state tuition and living costs I would surely be in debt even with a well paying job.
But I wish you the best of luck ^.^
Most schools have a policy, you would have to check that. Here, where i live, you're considered 'in-state' only if you've lived here for over a year. The tuition almost doubles if you're out-of-state or if you're a transient.
ilydani.

  • Oh =( Hmmm I guess I'd just do school here then move there? 0.0 Idk hmmmmmm ima e-mail some people tonight and see what I can get done.
  • Youd still be charged out of state for online classes. My animal sci class next semester is in state because my college isnt far from where i live. And yea. Cali is EXPENSIVE. Ive considered moving there after college to have my stable because the horse market is ten times better than it is here. Especially if i break TBs like i want too x.X

Plus guess what garn!!! I have a horsemanship class in COLLEGE XD COLLEGE CREDIT TO RIDE TEEHEE
  • Yea I've considered that It's gonna be expensive 0.0 That's why I'm gonna plan EVERYTHING before I go xD If I go haha and gratz!!!! xD You're gonna be in heaven! lol
  • Bwa ha ha!! Right? Anyways... my TB just cant keep her legs healthy. She's got an abcess in her foot.

But anyways. Are you planning on enrolling at alonap this spring? That would probably be your best bet so you could do your basics and get a job and save a bit of money for moving and upkeep
  • I want to so bad!! I don't know if we will have the money.. I guess I could do student loans?

I also REALLY don't wanna bee drug in to drama by Sheila and Katelyn D=

OH YEA! Shelia texted me yesterday asking me to "come pick her up" and when i asked her for what she said "Nevermind I'll figure it out" and wouldn's text back 0.0 Weird..
  • I dont think Katelyn will be there next semester. From what ive heard she's dropping out and sheila....... dont even get me started.
  • Expensive is an understatement. California is... insane. A starter house that would go for 100k anywhere else goes for like 1mil there. renting is just as bad, when my cousin and his bf came out a few years ago he was talking about how much things cost in San Francisco. He was saying the the tiny 1 bed apartment he was renting was almost 3k a month, and it wasn't even that nice of an apartment. Figure in inflation, higher gas prices, more expensive groceries, etc.... plus, with the current job market it could take you a few months to find a steady job, so to move you'd to save up enough money to potentially pay for everything for a few months.
    (SPIDERS!)
  • Omg wow... That's crazy... I have a feeling I'm gonna be saving for a while haha Maybe Lukari and I can split rent. It would be me, her, and my boyfriend sharing a place so it could be split three ways 0.0

Vampy, I talked to daddy and we are going to the college this coming week to talk to them. I gotta look into student loans though... and text me about Sheila <3
  • I used to live in California. It's an amazing place but very overcrowded and very expensive in places. Chances are, if you find someplace with cheap rent it's going to be in very bad parts of town. My older brother was able to find places for cheap rent usually - as in ~$500-800 a month. Unfortunately, those were all in areas where if you're not connected to the people around you, you'll get yourself killed (or worse). You're going to likely be looking at a minimum of 1k rent no matter which city or area you choose, and the closer you get to the larger cities (San Diego, San Fran, etc.), the more expensive it becomes. One of my brothers friends was paying over $1k a month for a studio apartment about 45 minutes south of San Francisco.

My younger brother had an internship over the summer at HP/Palm. They paid $3k a month for him to just have an apartment. Granted it was corporate/short lease housing, but the regular rates were still up in the thousands for a tiny place. His grocery bills weren't all that expensive, actually. When we headed down to North County (San Diego) though, the prices of everything seemed way too high. Like, $5 for a box of cereal that I could get in VA for $3. Meat is actually relatively cheap in California and it is super fresh. If you could get to a Mexican store, you will find all the meat you could possibly ever desire, and for super cheap. Most of the fruits/veggies you'll find (in any store) are super fresh as well.

The benefit of having so many people is the availability of public transit. Depending upon where you're at in Cali, you have little Sprinters/Lightrails, Caltrains, BART, buses, trollies, taxis, ferries, etc. You can always walk or bike as well. I heard that Davis is a really bike-friendly community and they've got a decent school. In some of the more hilly places, like San Fran, you wouldn't want to bike. The hills would kill you.

Most, if not all of the schools require that you live in the state for a minimum of 12 months. During that 12 months you typically are not permitted to attend school in any fashion, as it shows you are there strictly for schooling. After the 12 months though, you could enjoy pretty cheap tuition unless you're going to a university. For example, my older brother was going to college at only $20 something per credit. I'm in a much cheaper area on the east coast, and I'm paying $120 something a credit.

Just a note though, if you did regular college rather than a university, you'd probably spend quite some time trying to get into classes. As there is an overcrowding issue, they never have enough seats and the classes fill up quickly. They have some weird hierarchy too for who gets first class pick.

California is a beautiful place if you can afford to live there. There's never an end to what you can go out and do. Everything seems to be an easy walk, bike, or bus away. Since you're into photography, all of the various cultures, landscapes, wildlife, and places will make your heart go wild. If you can afford it, I'd say go for it. Even if you could just plan to stay there a couple months, living in California will likely change you.

    On an indefinite hiatus.
  • Oh wow. Yea I've been talking to people I know here and there that live in California and they say about the same with the rent and junk. I think a studio apartment would be fantastic! I've always loved them, but I'd deff have to have someone living with me to afford it 0.0 I asked my dad as night if we could vacation there this summer so that I could get a taste of it and see what it's like before I decide to try to save up or not. I really do want to though.. Have you guys ever heard of Rob and Big or Rob Dyrdek's fantasy factory? Well I've been e-mailing with his cousin Drama's website/twitter and I'm REALLY hoping to get a job at Robs Fantasy Factory and do something like Chanel does or something like that. I signed up to be one of Drama's "Reckless Rangers" haha it sounds so fun! I'm just waiting on an E-mail back.. I hope I get lucky! If I could do that, it would be awesome and I'd make good and stable money. They say they buy your plane tickets out there so transportation would already be settled and everything 0.0..I just hope I get the job/chance to do it lol
