Dissecting a Cat or Rabbit.

Well I am going to be starting Anatomy and Physiology class for Vet Techs. And I am so happy to finally start, but then some of the students that just got out of that class told us what some assignments were. Well they said the second day of class we are going to have a test on the anatomy of a rabbit. And that in a couple of weeks in the class we are going to dissecting a cat or rabbit. I am pretty happy to start but I am going to be nervous dissecting an animal. I only dissected a frog before, but we will see how this class goes.

  • I had to do the same thing at my veterinary college. Except, we had to dissect pregnant stray cats. :/ It was very sad to have to pull out dead fetal kittens, but I had to in order to pass. It is very hard.

  • I know there are some hard things you have to do in the Veterinary field. I know later in my career I will have to put a dog down  . But I do know that sometime it is the best thing for the animal.

  • The way i think about it is this: Even when you are putting an animal down, you are helping it out of pain. It is better to have tried your everything to save that animal and help it on to the rainbow bridge then to watch it suffer any longer. at the end of the day, you should know you did your everything and keep your head up to help the next one.

  • We dissected cats in my high school anatomy class. It really wasn't as difficult for me as I thought it would be. As much as I love animals, I just stopped thinking of it as a cat. Her name was Qevin and she was a fat tortoiseshell. The teacher made us name the cats and make them tombstones and write eulogies. Just don't think of it as an animal, think of it as... something else, I guess, is the best advice I can give.

  • Thanks. I tried to think of it as being used for science purposes. I have to talk to the teacher tomorrow and ask where she gets them from. I heard rumor that they were sick and had to be put down. Then I also heard that teachers can order cats to be dissected. Science is weird =p

  • This is why I could never be a vet. D: Although I greatly admire those who can, as you said, understand that ultimately this will help you to become a better vet so you can do good for animals. I don't have that kind of self-reassurance, lol. Keep us updated!
  • Thanks I know I am going to take pictures of the dissected cat that's if anyone wants to see. I know the good thing is we are going to be working with rescues and we will be able to foster them if we want. But I am excited to start.
