Gorgeous snakes but they're venomous rather than poisonous you could probably eat them with little problems. I could never have one as a pet though the things I've heard from people that do keep them are enough to tell me I couldn't handle one.

In my opinion snakes make awesome pets. Very inexpensive to feed and house, after initial costs of enclosure, hides, water dish, etc. If properly handled most commonly kept species are rather docile. Biggest thing is keeping the tank temp range and humidity correct, and keeping the bedding and water clean to prevent scale rot. Feeding them is a big thing for most people though... not everyone wants kill a mouse/rat to feed a snake.
Had a California kingsnake we got from a friend, but her original owner missed her so I gave her back. We're hoping she's gravid, in which case we'll be getting 1-2 baby kings from the clutch depending on the morph. :P We currently have a 1 year old female ball python, might be getting a male ball from the same friend sometime soon. We plan on getting a red tail boa and a burmese sometime within the next few years. I eventually would like to get a Brazilian rainbow boa and a green tree python, too.

Ball pythons are supposed to be good snakes for beginners due to them being pretty docile, but I have to disagree somewhat, as it can be VERY hard to get them to eat at times(especially babies), and the methods used to coerce them are a bit.... well, yucky. Red tails are bad for a first snake because they, in addition to some of the same feeding issues as balls, get very large very quick, and are known to be agressive. Some species of snake require a permit depending on where you live. If you're looking for a snake I'd suggest a kingsnake or cornsnake to start with. They're small, pretty docile, don't need a particularly large tank or special enviroment, and Sophie(our king) was an amazingly easy feeder.

As a side note, to anyone who may be worried, yes, we do know how large some of these animals grow and how long they live, and would NEVER set them loose like so many irresponsible snake owners have. We are completely willing to take care of a 10-13 foot snake for 20 years, and if a situation ever arose where we could no longer care for it, we know/have access to other responsible snake owners who would be able to provide them a home

cookies if you read all that
Awesome! You should post pictures of your snakes XD
I like snakes but I don't think I would be able to keep one as a pet. They are much prettier in the wild I think
YAY I get cookies! XD
