Doggy Help

As many of you know I have two female black labs, Molly and Dixie. Both are middle aged, Dixie is about 5 and Molly is 7. We leave our dogs home during the day for about 6 hours. They aren't very active anyways, so they don't really mind it. They are free to roam the house, play with each other, etc, and we usually walk them when we get home. Anyways, that's not the point. When we first got Dixie, we crated her. She hated being out of the crate, once we tried to leave her alone for 10minutes and she barked and barked the whole time.

Two years ago Dixie trusted us more and we trusted her more, so we tried it again. This time she laid on the couch happily the whole time. From then on we started leaving her out with our other dog. A little over a month ago, we moved. Dixie seemed fine and adjusted fairly quickly, as did Molly. After a week of letting them get used to the house, my mom went back to work and they were alone again. Once again they did ok.

Recently, Dixie has been getting into the cat litter in the basement. A few days ago, we put something in the door so it only opens enough for the cats to get in and out. We use it when we're not home to prevent Dixie from getting into the litter. We also put the cat food up when we're away. However, Dixie started getting into the cat food when we're home! I'll be in the other room, hear something, and shes quietly eating it when we're not with her!

Well, today I was the first one home. I come in and see a tore up bag all over the floor, it was something from a fundraiser and a kitchen utensil was inside. Thank goodness it was secure, because it was some sort of chopping knife! I thought it was odd that they would get into that, and when I pointed at it and scolded them Dixie looked gulity and nervous. Then, I walked down the hall to find pieces of paper towel and cotton balls scattered in the hall way and bathroom! She must have gotten into the garbage! My dad says it's because she doesn't have access to the litter box anymore, and she was bored.

So, I'm thinking this is because they are bored, but how do we stop it? We can't lock every room in the house, Dixie is fairly smart and would find a way to get into something. And I would feel terrible crating her again, it's too long for her to locked away. Is there anyone who knows excactly why this happened and how to stop it?

  • The Schipperkee that we used to have did the same thing (getting into the cat food & litter box). We bought him a Kong (a rubber toy that you put treats in), and as long as he had that to play with, he didn't touch the cat stuff.

  • We used to have a kong, but it only took them a minute to loose intrest in it. They don't play with their toys unless we are there with them...

  • I agree, if she's bored then get more toys. It could take a lot of tries to actually find one that she likes. I bought dozens of toys for one of my poms, but the only one that he really loves and hasn't destroyed was his "plubber" toy. If toys don't work, and you don't want to crate her, then I suggest getting a baby gate and isolating her in one room where she is safe and not going to destroy anything.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • Oh another idea, take her for a long walk before yo leave, so she'll be tired when you leave
