Got a new puppy

edited January 2011 in General Discussion
Well found her as a stray and she's staying here while we try to find her owners. She's so cute a little jack russell puppy I don't think she's that old maybe 4-5 months. I'll upload a picture if I can work out how

 • She's such a sweet little thing there's got to be someone out there looking for her. She's really friendly with dogs and people
 • I don't imagine a 4-5 month of puppy could go very far, so hopefully you find her owners soon. I'm sure they miss her, and will be very thankful you found, and took care of her. Just be careful with letting her around your own animals, because a 4-5 month old puppy might not be completely done with their shots(or have any at all if the owner's are responsible), which means they could catch something, or pass something to your animals.

 • Mine are vaccinated and I don't know about the US but puppies here are normally done at 8 and 10 weeks. I would say that's responsible you can't really take them out for walks before the shots. You can carry them of course which is vital for socialisation but that might be difficult in a large/giant breed.
 • I'm surprised they finish them so young in Australia! Is that even possible? Maybe Australia does less vaccinations than the US, or uses different types. They typically don't even start pups till about 8 weeks in the US, and the whole set can be finished between 4-6 months of age(depends on the vet). My pekingese(the only pup I've had in many, many years) wasn't finished with all the puppy shots until she was 6 months old. Nonetheless, it's always a good idea to quarantine strange animals, but maybe I'm just extra cautious, since I used to rescue reptiles, and it's a lot easier to spend things between them.

 • In the UK not Australia. Might be we don't have rabies here? That might be what takes longer in the US. Puppies get the vaccines at 8 weeks then a booster at 10 and are considered immuen
 • Found her owners anyway they were so happy
 • Pardon me. Between being ill and starting school yesterday, my brain was not functioning very well. I do not know why I thought you wrote Australia, when you didn't write where you live at all lol.

They don't do rabies in the UK? I have learned something new! That's probably a big reason why the ages are so different. I think the youngest they'll do it in the U.S. is 12 weeks(some place require it by law at this age), but a lot of owners/vets wait longer if possible. Dogs in both countries probably get the same, or similar, vaccines prior to that, but aren't considered done until the rabies is given in the U.S.

I'm so glad you found her owners! It's good to hear a happy ending.

 • Don't worry abut it. We've had stupidly strict quarantine laws for like 100 years and either very few cases of rabies in wild animals or none. So our animals don't need rabies shots. They get the standard parvo distemper etc shots at 8 weeks and then a booster at 10 in case mum's antibodies messed with the first ones then don't need a booster a year
