Ugh!
I cannot cut my male Shiba's nails for the show he has this weekend.
I don't want to hold him down because he squirms and would possibly hurt himself and I do not have the time to train him out of it right now...
He is VERY stubborn and I need to cut his toenails and toe hair. I don't trust any other groomers with it either.
I have a grooming table, I've tried that. I've tried having someone hold him down and made an attempt to train him out of it before.

Help!
I'm in tears and don't know what to do! I'm so frustrated!

 • Is there anything that would distract him? Really good treats or something. Or failing that maybe a vet could sedate him but that's pretty extreme
He doesn't get distracted around the clippers really, and I've been considering sedation.. That would be my very last resort though.

 • Is it completely essential that his nails are done for the show? It's a shame you don't have longer to condition him to having it done
 • Try being very calm about it( You probably were but it never hurts to sugest it). Would he be more calm though if you were holding him down and you had someone cutting his nails..
It's pretty much just a basic thing for shows, like bathing

 • I know I've handled a couple of dogs in the show ring but would the judge mark you down for it? It's been a while since I did it
 • One of my dogs hates having his nails clipped. If I were you I'd just take him to the vet and get them to do it. It's not very expensive and they know what they're doing.

The worse thing that can happen is that they'll accidentally nip the quick, which can happen regardless of how experienced a person is, and it shouldn't hurt for very long :)
Problem is.. I don't think I can get an appointment on time. And not only do I have to have his nails but have his toe hair clipped in the correct way for his breed, which is a lot more complicated than it sounds.. I don't think a vet could do all that :/

 • Ah, that's a shame. How do you usually do it? Sounds like a real challenge o_O

 • I've only shown him once, his breeder had his nails short before I got him so I didn't have to work on the feet, before him I used my other Shiba for shows and she just sat there while I clipped her nails

 • Could you call his breeder ask how they did it?
 • She's told me before and she said her husband held him down (He was a strong man) and used a dremel.. I don't own a dremel and there are no men living in my house, just my little sisters, me, and my mom who's almost always gone.
