I could have saved her...

Mecca.
A dog I bonded with at the humane society I work at is no longer living because of someones mistake.

Mecca was a beagle rescued from a puppy mill. She was FULL of puppies when she arrived.
I bonded with her instantly. She is very cautious of people and she is rather "picky" about who she liked.
I LOVED her! She would curl up on my lap and sleep while I did paperwork. She was friendly with nearly everyone! Including kids.
The rule with Mecca was that if a family was interested in her and wanted to see her, you had to do the assessment with the family before you took her out to see how she reacted. Usually she was perfectly fine. Every once in a while she would growl a little or not make eye contact etc. etc.
One volunteer made a HUGE mistake. They were walking Mecca and a family wanted to see her, well...he just walked right up to them and an older lady reached towwrds her very quickly and Mecca didn't like it. Mecca snapped at her and bit the lady's arm. It wasn't a bad bite or anything, she didn't draw blood or anything like that.
But the lady filed a complaint or something and they had to put Mecca through an assessment for temperment.
She didn't pass.
I could have saved her! I KNOW I could have if I were there the day it happened. I just know it.
But no she's gone because of someones careless mistake.

It just makes me so mad that she's gone!!! UGH!!!! I could scream!!!

RIP Mecca, forever loved and missed!
<img src="http://www.petango.com/sms/photos/1410/51dde9a3-b177-47ed-b537-3ca1fae5fcb3.jpg"; alt="http://www.petango.com/sms/photos/1410/51dde9a3-b177-47ed-b537-3ca1fae5fcb3.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

 • Mistake of another volunteer or not, there probably wasn't a lot you could have done short of adopting her before the incident. As a fearful dog from a puppy mill she most likely never received appropriate training or socialization, so it would have only been a matter of time until she bit someone out of fear before or after being adopted. It sounds like what she needed was long term care and training, but unfortunately shelters aren't typically equipped to handle that, which is not your fault at all. Still, I'm sorry. It's so hard to get attached to an animal in a shelter, and then find out it was euthanized.

 • All dogs at the shelter I work at go through temperament testing before they are put on the adoption floor, so I find that odd your shelter doesn't do that before deeming dogs adoptable. There's a beagle at mine right now I want to take home so bad, he's such a sweetheart. I know once they're on the adoption floor they are never euthanized, though, so I can have hope he'll get a home someday.

I'm sorry though. I know what it's like to get attached and have them adopted. I couldn't imagine knowing they had to be euthanized D;

I work at a Humane Society not a shelter we do not euthanize dogs unless necessary. Mecca was a dog that needed to be placed in the right home where she would be well looked after. She was trained and normally listened very well. I still think if I was there the day it happened, I could have at least stopped the volunteer from approaching the people.

 • we don't euthanize dogs unnecessarily either, and we are not a "shelter" in the context you are thinking of, I just refer to it as a shelter...because technically those are still a shelter for the dogs until they get a new home =/

I dont get why you're attacking me like that... I didnt think I said anything offensive o.O
Ditto. I've started to just refer to all places that take in animals as shelters or rescues, because I've been to a few "humane societies" that routinely euthanize animals. In fact, the local one I volunteered at refers to itself as a "humane society" but has been routinely euthanizing animals for years. Some people do appear to be sensitive over the terms, but from what I have seen those terms are not universal in meaning or significance. However, I agree that "shelter" is probably the best blanket term to refer to all places that take in animals, regardless of policies on euthanasia.

Agreeing with both of you. Shelter is pretty much a term for a place that keeps you out of the elements like rain and provides privacy, which is almost any place where animals are kept, from home, to humane society.
It's also a less 'scary' alternative word for humane society to some people.

 • Agh. Okay you guys. I wasn't trying to be rude :oops: I know what you mean by shelter ;)
But we really don't euthanize dogs unless necessary. They go to foster care or rescues if they need a special home. We've had one dog for 2 years, and one cat for 4 years. It's just how our humane society works. It is small and local.

I'm upset and angry, okay?
I don't want this to be an arguement, I needed to vent it because I am hurt...

 • I know how you feel. Some freaks. I volunteer at a pet shelter,there are a couple of pitbulls and one guy wanted to adopt one,he took her outside to meet her...and smacked her across the face...well I saw this and I'm like Dude,why on earth did you do that? He said he wanted to see how the dog reacted before he got her! People can be very careless. It breaks my heart to hear that :x
 • I'm very sorry, but it wasn't your fault. In my opinon, rather than putting a dog like that down, they should at least try to train it or find a suitable home for it with an experienced owner. There was nothing you could've done, I'm sorry, but if it makes you feel any better it was not your fault.
