First Ten Minutes.

edited August 2010 in Vent
My first ten minutes driving in the driver's ed car goes like this:
I drive down a street, I'm doing fine and whatnot. I turn down another street and see someone's backing out of a driveway.
They had their brake lights on for a few seconds so I assumed they saw me and stopped.
But right as I get next to them they shoot out of their driveway at 30mph XD
Guess who got hit on their first ten minutes driving?!

Turns out the lady was distracted yelling at her dog in the car.
The instructor said it wasn't my fault, and after that point I did better than before.

 • I almost was hit within the first MINUTE of driving. I hadn't even left my street. We live on culdesacs and theres a stop sign. Well.. this one girl on my street who is a year older than me was leaving her house with a bunch of friends packed into her car and she didnt stop at the stop sign. My instructor had to hit the brake on his side of the car to stop me since he could see she wasn't looking. >.> lovely

So everyone, watch out when I come to town >.> lol

At least you guys are ok ^_^ <3
 • When you drive in residential areas, always look way ahead of yourself. If you see an animal, person, or car on the sidewalk or in a driveway, then slow way, way down ahead of time. You have to be aware of other people and things, just as much as you are aware of yourself. That advice kept me from hitting a little kid on a tricycle, that unexpectedly flew down a driveway and into the road when I had first started learning.

It was like this:
Mom: Slow down, there is a little kid other there.
Me: He's in his yard. We aren't even near him yet.
Mom: Slow down!
Me: -slows down-
Mom: Slow down!
Me: I did! -slows down to a snails pace...literally rolling along like someone had given us a push-
Kid: -zooms into the road-
Me: -stops about 2 car lengths away-
Mom: Next time I tell you slow down, you better slow way down. You could have hit that kid! -insert 5 minute lecture, while we wait for him to get out of the road-
The thing is is that I did that, but the lady was too distracted to notice what was going on because she said she was yelling at her dog in her car.. Then she went out of her driveway faster than she should've.. I also just read one of the things in my state's driver licensing and things booklet (whatever it's called XD) and it said that when backing out of a driveway or something you have to be aware of surroundings and people on the road have the right of way lol

I bet that was scary! I'm glad you're okay. Least it wasn't your fault, and yeah, you do have a story! Way to make the best of the situation!

Too bad that she wasn't paying attention. I have noticed that not everyone goes by the rules, so I tend to just slow way down and creep by when I see someone pulling out. It is annoying, though, especially when you have the right of way. Guess they don't quite see it that way.
