"Designer" breeds

edited August 2010 in General Discussion
Anyone else hate that now people breed mutts like all the time and sell them for so much and call them "designer" breeds? I do. I think it is ridiculous that now they are starting to breed mutts when there are already so many mutts in the world which end up in shelters because they are mutts. It's oober ridiculous. I mean breeding purebreds I sorta understand because they are a little more rare than mutts and breeders try to bring the breed closer to the breed standard and make it their life goal to get as close to the standard as possible but really? Sell a mutt for like 600+ dollars when you can go get one from a shelter. Thats ridiculous.

  • I see a lot of people with designer breeds. They come up to me and flaunt them all "Look what -I- have." I always look at them and go "Great, you bought a mutt that cost more than your monthly house payment. Congrats."

  • Thats what I am saying. xD. Totally agree with that statement kaz.

  • lolz. I mean yeah their cute and such but why not go rescue one from a shelter for like 80-200 dollars instead of buying one from a breeder for like 600+ ya know. :P Just doesn't seem all that smart.

  • I don't have a big problem with crossing breeds, so long as the person is doing it with the intent of something like creating a new breed, bettering a breed by introduction of another, or creating an early generation(F1 or F2) dog with desired attributes for a specific purpose other than showing and breeding(a service or work dog for example). I've heard quite a few breeders of the poodle crosses are trying to get them to breed true, so that they may one day be a recognized breed. I do not agree with producing mutts(honestly, I've always thought "designer breeds" was a stupid title) for profit. After TV programs and news reports started talking about Puggles, they popped up like CRAZY out here, because sick individuals saw it as a chance to make big bucks with the whole "cute puppy in the window" scheme. It's ridiculous how many there are in shelters out here. Every time I've been in my local shelter, and while volunteering there, I've seen Puggles.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • I am STRONGLY against the selling of mutts outside of animal shelters. I agree with Sushi in one area, adding a breed into their line to produce a certain trait. For example the Olde English Bulldogge was created to resemble the first English Bulldogs, so the pitbull and current English bulldog where bred together to produce a more original bulldog - and I know some breeders will add in an English Bulldog into their Olde English Bulldogge lines to give it a certain trait or make it look more Bulldog than Pit. However, the AKC still does not recognize this breed, but they do have their own club.

Poodle crosses are a big no no for me, because I have a poodle and I am really passionate about this breed when it comes to designers. When "goldendoodles" and "labordoodles" came out they where claimed to be a "hypoallergenic" dog - but, for one there are no such things as hypoallergenic dogs, some dogs just have less dander. Secondly, mixing the poodle with a golden or a lab produced more dander than just a regular old poodle. With things like petfinder you can find just about any breed throughout the country, your state, etc. without having to breed or buy a puppy that shouldn't have been brought into this world in the first place, as cruel as that sounds there are dogs already in this world that could be adopted but are being put to sleep because people think it's a great idea to sell a mutt for as much as I got my English Bulldog for and then there are the super smart people who think it's great to buy them. :D /sarcasm

Anyways, when my boyfriend worked at this rescue shelter here there was a "gooldendoodle" brought in, the owners spent THOUSANDS on this dog...this mutt. And guess where he ended up? Right in a shelter. I just wanted to take him home a cuddle him because he looked like a teddy bear. The reason why they brought him in? I'm not sure. But, it was probably because of his size, he was always hyper, and he was VERY misbehaved. A little training could have gone a long way with him.
  • I don't agree with it. Especially the poodle cross breeders who sell for stupid amounts of money and guarantee a hypoallergenic dog when in fact you can't know until 6 months. I know someone who has a rescue goldendoodle the owners bought it as a fashion accessory basically look at my awesome designer dog and when it became a large high energy intelligent dog gave it up because they couldn't be bothered actually doing anything with it. i don't mind crossbreeding where it is specifically to breed out a health problem crossing pointers with dalmations for example to get rid of kidney problems in the dalmations or to breed out a more extreme trait in a breed and after that bred back to pedigree dogs but not just crossing any two dogs and selling them for stupid amounts of money.
  • I agree with what everyone says except one thing. The thing about breeding for better service dogs. It is well known that most "designer" dogs bred can be unpredictable due to being a mix of two different breeds. So how would the breeder know what they would end up with? It's pointless in my opinion. As was said, I have seen many puggles in shelters and labradoodles and many other mutts yet people would rather go spend thousands on one from a breeder? It's ridiculous. And again people end up underestimating the dogs because of the fact that being mixed of two breeds they can be unpredictable. They could be sweet and calm or they could end up having a very hyper nature. A lot of people buy them for the looks then later find out that it was a mistake because it did not turn out how they thought it would.

  • My friend's family breeds goldendoodles.

I love her to death, she's my best friend, she loves animals, but I can tell her parents are in it only for the money. They really don't know what they're doing, after the pups were born her mom was asking me about feeding instructions. However, they got lucky with a smooth birth and 9 health puppies that sold fast for BIG bucks. A while ago my friend said she didn't like mutts. I was like...but you breed mutts! The other day I said "No offense or anything, but you do realize that golden doodles are mutts." Anyways, they're planning they're second litter for next year....I hope they don't learn the hard way when something goes wrong and they're too inexperienced to fix it.

But, that's off topic. Poddle crosses are mutts, I don't know why people breed them, and I hate it when people sell them for 1000s of dollars. I went to a petstore and they had some papillon-poodle-pug thing for 800 bucks.

  • I do find it silly when people pay hundreds for mutts at the pet stores. If that's what they are bent on, however, I find it to be their choice. If I'm not the one paying for it, I'm not gonna fuss, mainly because, they don't care.

I do encourage shelter pets just because they're just as good and they also need chances. Plus, that money you save can go to start saving up for all the bills that will hit you down the road.

I always joke around after leaving pet stores. The other day I was talking to sis about how the breeds should at least be creative. No more _oodles. (I don't care for poodle mixes, but eh, that's just me) I said that I was gonna have spanielXyorkie crosses. Sporks! (that is MY copyright idea! No one better steal it!) Of course, I'm against breeding dogs just for the sake of breeding them, so I won't, but hey. Who wouldn't wanna walk down the street and say "Wanna meet my spork?!"

But yeah, I find it a silly thing to do. Just a personal opinion, though.
  • I always thought about making "shacks" lmao. Just because of the name. Shih-Tzu jack russell mix. lmao. Of course as I have said above I do not condone breeding mutts for money. I just think its a waste of time when you can get the same thing from a shelter and so many are put down each day because no one wants them so why make so many more suffer just so you can say you spent over 600 dollars on a "designer" why not buy a mutt from a shelter and call it a designer? xD. It just seems ridiculous and I just look down upon the breeders breeding these dogs because if you are making designer dogs I believe that it is just for money because it surely isn't to better the breed. Which makes them no better than puppymills.

  • I have a problem with people breeding them very much..not for that much...i LOVE mutts!! i have had 2 lab mix great pyrenees and a border collie mix great pyrenees....they were some of the best dogs ever! I dont even like calling them mutts cause it sounds like they are stupid mix breeds when really they are intelegent mixed breeds!!! I HATE the word mutt!! It sounds horrible to me as an animal lover for someone to go around saying yeah I have a stupid mutt at home!! I think no dogs should be called mutts..and I personally hate people who say the dog is pure bred and its NOT so the person ends up paying millions for a mix breed then going and killing it!:(
I dont like designer breeds as they are for city people and i hate the city!! I love any dog no matter what breed ,as if you just want a friend **mixed breeds** are actually more loyal and loving then pure breds!!!

  • I agree with shameh. Mutt is just a name for mixed breeds. It is not mean or anything. AND I have personally owned one mix breed dog and three purebred dogs. The most loyal of all four was my purebred cocker spaniel which I loved like no other. People who say mutt to describe a dog is not saying anything bad about that dog. If for example someone says it with a rude tone to the dog then that is not very nice but just the word mutt casually used is nothing to think bad about people for. It describes the line of the dog in a shorter way.

I have NO problem with mutts in anyway as my bf has a mutt and I like him quite a bit so. I just prefer purebreds for the reason that I plan to breed purebred dogs one day. Now when I have enough room for an extra dog I will gladly go get a mutt from a shelter because they do not deserve to die just because of their parentage or situations. My bf even talks about running a no kill shelter on the side of my breeding. It all sounds great to me. :P But as shameh said I do not appreciate you trying to put down purebreds. Both mutts and purebreds can be oober loyal and loving. Just depends on the owners and the tempermant of that dog.

  • Mutts is a nickname for a mixed breed dog, just like rottie, pit bull, dobbie, etc. are nicknames for purebreds.
I -HATE- when others try to force animal shelter dogs onto people, we shouldn't -HAVE- to adopt from a shelter or feel guilty it's not our fault. It's the fault of the person who put the animal there. Heck, I'm all for animal shelter dogs but if I want a purebred to show, breed, etc. (Like my English Bulldog I just got) then you can count on it that I will buy one.
  • Agreed avla. xD. I feel bad for all the poor dogs in the shelters and such but at this moment in my life, a shelter dog would not fit in. I only need a dog for showing and such and shelter dogs can not be used for that so I have no use for one until I happen to have room for just a normal house doggeh.

  • Same here, right now we can only afford one dog and I wanted a medium sized dog and the English Bulldog has been a dream breed of mine and we where lucky enough to find a local breeder and he will be a kick start to my career. But, if me and my boyfriend move into a bigger house with a yard next year then my boyfriend wants to get a GSD mix from a shelter.
  • Right same here. We already have my akita which takes a lot of money food wise and vet wise and room wise. We have no more room for another dog and I wanted to start my career as well so I bought a purebred akita to get to a new point in that. :P I figured while I had the money to buy a dog which I would end up needing in the future I mise well buy it. xD
