After taking a nap..

edited August 2010 in General Discussion
I couldn't move. I was sleeping in the car and I woke up, and I just couldn't move or say anything. I felt really weak. Finally, my brother kicked me and moved my leg, and I could move. It was soooo scary. Anyone else have a similar story or an explanation?

  • Whoa, that sounds really scary. How long did it last? Are you sure you weren't still half asleep?

  • It sounds like you're talking about astral projection. It's basically where your spirit and your body become separated. It happens quite often subconsciously. There are some people who can do it consciously, but it takes a lot of patience to do. Some people don't believe it exists, because it does sound so awkward and sort of unbelievable. I mean, how many people walk around saying that their mind and body were separated last night? Most people would look at you like you were absolutely insane.

You can wake up with the feeling of falling or even being unable to move/speak, but you could be aware of what's happening. You might travel astrally and then go someplace on the physical ground and think to yourself, "I've been here before." or "I saw that before.", also known as deja vu. (Deja vu is also said to be an experience from another life, but I'll let that go since it's not immediately related.) Some people say they've seen a loved one be killed, injured, or put in a position of danger right as it was happening, even though they were many miles away. Astral travel/projection can last just a few seconds on up to hours at a time. There are some people who do it more often than others. You also might not notice the majority of them and only notice a couple. My younger brother, for example, pretty much does it whenever he feels exhausted and takes a nap. He remembers most of the time. I, on the other hand, remember very few of them. My older brother does everything to prevent himself from experiencing them.

Astral projection is the simple and surprisingly common process of the spirit taking temporary breaks from the body that houses it. The break might be momentary, and the spirit might stay in close proximity to the body, for the sheer exercise of it. Or it might be a more distant experience in which the spirit projects itself to some specific location, which in the dimension of the spirit realm takes no longer than the blink of an eye.

There's several websites and books related to astral travel and such. :) Sylvia Browne is a very good author from what I've seen. Her book, Phenomenon basically describes everything to do with what she describes as the paranormal. Note that paranormal doesn't just cover ghosts, it covers everything "seemingly outside normal sensory channels".

I can refer you to a few other books, websites, or general topics to research if you'd like. :) I've been doing research on this type of stuff for a little while now. Even if you don't want to believe in this line of subjects, it really makes you think about the possibilities.

  • Wow,I'd REALLY like to get some of those websites from you if you don't mind 0.0

This has happened to me before... It's kinda scary hearing you describe it..

I was laying in my room one day and one second i was reading a book and the next i felt like i was falling and i instantly thought of my brother Steven. a few hours later my brothers wife called and told us that my brother had fallen off the trailer of his truck (he drives eighteen wheelers) and had been taken to the hospital about two hours before. which is when i had the feeling of falling 0.0

Another time, my brother steven and i BOTH dreamed of my dad being involved in a fire. in mine, my father died. in stevens, my father just got hurt. The next day my brother called my mom and told her. when i woke up for the day, i told her about mine. so she called steven and told him.. when my dad got home from work he told us that he had burned his arm at the mill where he works. and that one of their engines blew up and that he had been originally assigned to that department but he was running late getting back there...

the last one i can remember right off the top of my mind is that i was in the truck with my brother and his wife, and i got a REALLY bad feeling about something and kept seeing like a little girl in my head but there was nothing there. a few minutes later i fell asleep listening to music and dreamed a little girl ran out into the road. i screamed and woke up. later on down the road i got the bad feeling again and saw a kid in a driveway and told my brother to slow waaaaay down and go slow. he said that the kids momma was holding him and i was like "steven i KNOW something bad is going to happen. SLOW DOWN" right when my brother slowed down, the little kid got loose from his mom and started chasing a dog. BOTH of them came INTO the road and my brother was going slow enough that he could stop... he just looked at me like i was crazy and asked how i knew it would happen..

I've have SO many dreams come true that it is kinda scary to me =( I havent told many ppl that because like you said, im sure they would look at me like i was stupid... is that a type of astral projection? 0.0 (sorry for it being so long)
  • Garnet, I think the first two you listed would be classified as projection/travel. It's actually kind of interesting that you and your brother both experienced something when it concerned your father, and that they were different. Because you did go from being in your room to thinking of your brother, plus the falling sensation, it would (in my opinion) most definitely be astral travel. It was just a split second, right? Did you actually see anything or did you just have the feeling? As for the incident with your father, I think pretty much it [the Other Side] offered you two possibilities to an accident that was going to happen.

The last one sounds like a "gut feeling". My take on it is that you could have known by one of two things; astral travel or intuition, for lack of a better word. Astral travel earlier that day or week, or even much earlier, could have shown you the kid in the street. Intuition, gut feeling, instinct, etc. would also be likely, because it's said that you get information from "The Other Side". It's said that everybody has a Spirit Guide "assigned" at birth, one who agreed to watch over you during this life cycle. I'd be willing to bet that it wasn't astral projection that told you of the danger, but instead a warning from your guide.

I do know the feeling of "something bad is going to happen". It drives me insane because I try to figure out how to avoid it, and yet I don't know what I'm trying to avoid.

I'm just curious, do you have any sort of Native American heritage? My brothers and I seem to all have the "ability" to sense things that others cannot. For me, I can sense spirits, hear voices, and travel. I can also read auras, but I can't see the colors. My older brother, Dave, used to be capable of speaking with spirits, hearing them, and premonitions. His daughter apparently "inherited" his ability to speak with spirits. She's only 4 and she has seen multiple ghosts. She's too young to understand that they're not here on the physical plane, so I know at least she's real. (If all else, a 4 year old can't easily lie about seeing spirits.) My younger brother, Arthur, (though in denial) gets premonitions and travels quite often. Arthur and I also know what the other is thinking, even if we're miles from one another. Sometimes if I'm really distressed, Dave will know it and he'll call me. He lives all the way on the other coast. I'd love to ask my other family members if they've ever seen or heard anything unusual, but asking people invites a lot of negativity and could also lead to some false claims. We are part Cherokee, so I'm looking at it from that angle specifically. Since they [Native Americans] are more of a nature-based culture/religion, it's easier to assume that they would naturally be born more open to outside influences.

Anyway, from my understanding there are really two parts of visions, regardless of how they were obtained. They will either come true, or they will not. You can either act to prevent it, or you could sit back and let it roll its course. Personally, as much as I would love to interfere with it, should you interfere after seeing something that wasn't really going to come true, you could actually make something else happen. If you see, say, a friend in a very critical situation, you might want to do everything in your power to make sure it doesn't happen. So, say, you have your friend leave school early to avoid the accident. On the way from school, something else just as bad (or worse) could happen because something was done to prevent it to begin with.

[I might not make sense right now, but I can clarify anything later. XD]

Many people are afraid of astral travel. A few are afraid that it is dangerous or somehow associated with "black magick", witchcraft, devil-worshiping, etc. I know at least one religion bans the practice, which is kind of hypocritical because they probably knowingly traveled while enforcing that particular rule. The common cause of hesitation for consciously traveling is the fear of leaving your body unattended. Somehow there's a fear that if your spirit isn't with your body, you may become trapped outside or not know what's happening to it [your physical body]. I don't believe there's any way you can not be aware of what's happening on the physical plane, because it seems that even if you're in the same position as the original poster, anything physical done to your physical body will bring you back immediately.

As a note, Dave is afraid of traveling because he doesn't want to leave the physical body behind. He's more into this type of research than I am. I'm completely fascinated by the idea of astral projection, whereas he isn't. If you're afraid of it, then it's not something to be ashamed of. If you deny it exists, that's alright too. Arthur denies it's existence, but really without astral travel or some form of spirit guide you can't have a "psychic". :)

Also, I'll just say that while there is a way to consciously bring on astral travel, to my knowledge there is no way to stop it. It'll happen, consciously or not. All attempts to close it off would be futile, especially after you know it exists. You can ignore that it's there, but it still doesn't change the fact that you know (deep down) that it's there. It's just like, if you see spirits or hear their voices, you can't just close your mind to them. Ignore them all you want, they will still be there. Only open your mind if you're willing to keep it open.

I'll gladly PM you some of the links Garnet. :)

  • Wow. I actually have two different type of Indian in me 0.0 On my dads side; my great grandmother is a full blooded Cherokee Indian. She was a chief's daughter (I think that's what my dad told me. I asked my parents about it when I read your post). On my moms side; my great great grandmother is full blooded, Black Foot Indian. So I'm guessing the Cherokee is more prominent than the other right? I know I have spent the last few days on a Cherokee Indian Reservation here in Tennessee. (I've decided to learn how to speak Cherokee btw) <a href="http://i27.tinypic.com/f5c13d.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i27.tinypic.com/f5c13d.jpg

yea the thing with my brother "falling" was only a few seconds long. like i was on here (VP) and i suddenly felt like i was falling and instantly thought of Steven. then i was back to VP a few seconds later.

My mom reminded me of another thing. Like could siblings all be bonded mind wise somehow? About three months ago. I was at my friend Delia's house, my brother Steven was at work, and my brother Chris was with his wife at his house. Out of no where I got this strange feeling and my mom flashed into my mind. So I grabbed my cellphone and tried calling her but couldn't get her to answer the phone. I kept seeing bad images in my mind and thinking of someone breaking into our house. So I called my dad's cellphone and asked where he was at and he said going to work. He also told me that Steven had called earlier that morning asking about our mom. Said he had a dream that something bad had happened. So I called Steven and talked to him and said that he hadn't heard from mom that day and was thinking of driving over from work. I said not to and that I would go over there. So I got Delia up and asked her to ride with me. I grabbed my keys and went out to my ruck and headed to my house. When I got there, my brother Chris' truck was in the driveway. I went inside and he was sitting there talking to my mom. I asked why he was there and he said that he had a bad feeling about my mom and couldn't get her on the phone so he drove over to check on her. I called Steven back and told him about it and he said that we beer stop having the same dreams and stuff cause it was freaking him out.

Would that be a gut feeling or astral projection? 0.0
  • Not to discredit anything said in this thread, they are neither wrong nor right depending on your beliefs, but there are non-spiritual explanations for it.
Sleep paralysis can occur when the brain awakens from REM sleep faster than the body. During REM sleep your body naturally experiences a type of paralysis to protect itself from reacting to the vivid dreams often experienced, so when your brain awakens faster than your body, it can be disturbing and frightening to find you can't move. While watching something on tv(NatGeo maybe?) I heard this is often the scientific explanation given when people report being abducted by aliens. I've experienced various sleep related phenomenons such as sleep paralysis, or jerking(the feeling of falling, and being jerked awake), but only in times of high stress/anxiety, and/or very little sleep(as little as an hour in 3 days). My doctor told me that since there is nothing wrong with me physically(no sleep related brain problems), I just need to change my sleeping habits, and lower stress, which has thus far proven to be true.

Pepper, if you continue to have those experiences in a short period of time(say, 12 times in a week or 2), you might want to talk to your doctor about them to figure out if you are getting enough sleep.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • There are (and always will be) two or more different explanations, each based on science, for everything. I agree that astral travel and things of that nature could indeed be false, but could indeed be true. Science can neither prove or disprove the existence of topics along this subject line though. You have studies that seemingly prove both sides are right, and yet there's no definitive proof that either side is correct. :) All about your own interpretation and your own beliefs. I don't connect paranormal with any sort of spiritualism/religion, personally, but I do know that many people do connect the two together.

I do agree with you though, Sushi. I'm glad you've been able to lower your stress levels and I'm glad it's made a difference for you. :)

Pepper, if you are concerned about it, don't be afraid to talk to your doctor, especially if you have this feeling excessively within a short time period. I'd say probably getting this particular feeling more than 3-5 times a week would be excessive, but definitely if you reach ~12 times in a week or so would be a concern. It's better safe than sorry. :) Also, if you don't already do it; meditation, yoga, or anything that relieves you from the stress of everyday life is good for you. Even if you don't get this feeling again, letting stress go as often as you can will probably help you feel better overall.

  • This is very interesting, mainly because of all the paranormal experiences I've been through. I used to talk to random people when I was young, it could've been imaginary friends or just random babbling, but I would sometimes tell my mother it was 'Rose', her late grandmother who had died a month before my birth. I don't remember talking to anyone, but I do remember one night, at my grandmother's old house, a bunch of people sleeping over, and they were all sleeping on her bedroom floor. She is and was extremely devoted to dance, being a rather young grandmother. She had people from her dance team sleep over all the time, and I only slightly remember this, since I was probably 3. Last Christmas, when the family was all gathered at her new house, we were small talking and I brought that up. Everyone kept questioning me, and I finally asked if anyone had really slept over like that ever. My grandmother told me everything about that house, and that it was built ontop of a civil war battle field. I constantly pick up the phone before it rings, knowing who's on the other line, and stuff like that.
I have a bunch more little stories, but I don't want to bore anyone, and I'm not sure how much I could say on here about my paranormal experiances. If anyone else has any stories, please post. I'd love to know I'm not alone. xP
And please send me the links. Thanks so much for the info!! :]

I'll be like "momma phone!" and she'll be like "what about it?" then it will start ringing and ill tell her who it is without looking at the caller ID. She has actually had my doctor talk to me about going to a therapist to find out why I can do it 0.0 Same with my cellphone ill pick it up and a few seconds later it will go off. my dad always says "your phone didn't go off." and ill hold up a finger and then it does 0.0
