<img src="http://i30.tinypic.com/2my3o6v.jpg"; alt="http://i30.tinypic.com/2my3o6v.jpg"; class="bb-image" />
Do you SEE where my frustration stems from? Do you? I don't mind wolves, it's the ignorance surrounding wolves that get on my nerves. There are so many "Save the Wolves" foundations, when the basic gray wolf that everyone is so in love with is no endangered, it's on the least concern list. We don't need more wolf foundations! What about the tigers? Or the pink dolphin? There is just so much ignorance in one fanbase, it's mind bottling. The internet, one of the most powerful communication devises of all time...is accessed by so many ignorant people who have access to OTHER ignorant people and before you know it, you have a giant ignorant fan base.

...in case your wondering, I highlighted the typical "wolfaboo" responses, look it up, it sounds basically like one person is writing the same comments.

I don't have this problem on VP, it's everywhere else though. I just needed to vent.

  • I know we talked about this on DA, but.........

WHAT ABOUT THE DELHI SANDS FLOWER-LOVING FLY!!1!1!1
Might not be as majestic, or however people choose to describe wolves, but it is about to wiped off the Earth forever. Almost all of the Delhi sands are gone from California, and once they are gone we will loose dozens of species including the fly.

I got so sick of telling people my conservation career goals, and then hearing back "With seals?" "With wolves?" With pandas?" 1. Harp seals are not threaten or endangered. I get that you don't like way they are hunted, but the species that go extinct everyday could use a little more help. 2. Do I even need to say anything about wolves? 3. Pandas are endangered, and they do need help, but China is doing an absolutely amazing job. We shouldn't take our focus off pandas, but we also shouldn't limit it to pandas either.
Nowadays I just tell people I want to work with lizards and bugs, but since most people find lizards and bugs insignificant, most people go "Oh, that's cool." and then drop it. It really angers me that people only want to save the "cool" or "cute" animals.

The amount of species currently going extinct is alarming. We are practically experiencing a mass extinction right in front of out faces, which is why I can't understand why these foundations set up for these animals of LEAST CONCERN are receiving millions, if not billions, to protect them, but creatures like the Delhi Sands Flower-loving Fly are being petitioned to be destroyed so humans can build shopping centers and housing tracts. Seriously...what in the world...

It's fine to love animal, even obsess over it if you want, but be a little bit more logical, and less emotional, and get your facts straight before you make a species a complete joke.
"We have to be logical. We have to aim our activity first to the endangered species. Those who are moved by the plight of the harp seal could also be moved by the plight of the pig - the way they are slaughtered is horrible."

----
Also, I loled at the "Where do you get your facts? A wolf RPG!?!"
It's probably true. Too many of them get drawn into cartoons like Balto, and their little wolf RPGS, that they start merging facts with fiction. Wolves are like most animals, if leaving one behind means they get to survive, then they'll turn tail and run. I just can't stand when people seriously project human emotions and actions on to animals, thus misrepresenting them.

  • I myself live in Alaska... So to everyone that thinks we are "ignorant" against wolves... You know WHY we have "ignorance" against wolves? I shall tell you...

About 2 yrs. ago, my family had 2 Fresians that we had planned to breed for 5 yrs. We paid about 13k for each parent Fresian. We then paid another 3k to have the mare bred. I lived in Sterling at the time. We had 10 acres. completely fenced in with electric wire, chainlink as-well as a 3-panel wooden fence behind all that... We took every precaution we could to keep wolves from getting into our yard. We had livestock dogs out, we had a big ol' team of huskies as-well surrounding our barn and yard to keep wolves away. The barn even had an electric fence put around it as-well as barbed wire lining the bottom to discourage digging. We had the door botled/padlocked in 3 places as-well everytime we entered the barn or left it.
One night, our dogs went nuts and started frantically barking. When we had gotten out to the barn, several of our huskies were dead, as-well as 2 of our Great Pyreneese and last but not least our 4 wk. old Fresian Colt that we had bred. Both our male and female had gotten puncture wounds as-well from the wolves trying to get at them. We were able to kill 2 wolves and reported it to fish and game. I do believe the wolves were euthanized shortly after this as we were told. These wolves, as-well as most of our coyotes are not afraid of people. They will attack a smaller person around 5' even if they're alone and without their pack. The Colt was not eaten at-all. Just killed. After it was dead, the wolves didnt really seem to want to eat it anyway, as most of them had left, and only a few remained that were attacking our sleddogs.

I have absolutely NO remorse for wolves that are like this. All around us is TONS of woods, tons of moose, smaller prey, etc. They have absolutely NO problem getting any of these, as there's so much wildlife. If we wanted to and it was legal... We'd be able to literally walk out in the woods for about 10 mins. stumble upon a moose and just shoot it. That's how easy it is. SO when a wolf or even a wolf pack in my case, goes through ALL our precautions, ALL of our dogs and the Colt's LARGE parents, just to kill a few of our sleddogs, the livestock protectors and the colt, without eating it... I have no problem killing them.

However, I also wouldnt just go out and kill a wolf. I just dont like that people are always saying that "Alaskans kill wolves for no reason". Most have reasons. Some people do not... No. But there are plenty of wolves around here... They're not going to be extinct. And when you think about it... A wolf has at-least 3 pups in every litter. So for every 1 wolf down... 3 more are born. They'll be fine. Just dont like the "poor wolves, mean Alaskans" people. XD

  • I read both of these in their entirety and I want to say your both completely dead on. The thing about these wolf lovers, is that they have no care in the world about conservation of other species, or people's livestock. It's ignorant to say what a critical part of the ecosystem wolves are, because there are other predators like them that could help regulate other prey animals. I don't want wolves to go extinct completely, I'm not saying that at all. It's just that they need to be regulated or things like having pets and live stock killed happen! It's heart breaking to have your pet killed and it's expensive to have your livestock attacked.

Oh and these wolfaboos just love the Alaskan people. They think they're all wolfz hatrz, and they think Sarah Palin should be murdered because she is having wolves hunted and regulated for the safety of other people and their animals. It's laughable really.

I blame that anime, what's it called...lemme look it up..."Wolfs Rain", you know they get their spelling of the word "wolves" from the "wolfs" in the title. Those ignorant, uneducated, close minded nit-wits.

Wolves do not need saving. Did you read my post? There are thousands of wolf saving organizations. We don't need one more. White tailed deer are alright as long as they're kept in a good population number and are not over breeding. Any animal (like the that most commonly obsessed over timber wolves) are allowed to be hunted because they are on the least concern list, so hunting them isn't illegal). I don't know what the number of white tailed deer are in your area, but if their numbers are dwindling it's nice to see people care.

  • I wasn't saying people should worry about saving wolves... Just saying I've never heard anyone where I live say anything about saving them, never seen anyone say anything about it until reading your post... And the deer here aren't just white tailed deer, they're solid white.

<a href="http://www.senecawhitedeer.org/"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">www.senecawhitedeer.org/

Just google white deer, there's all sorts of things about them... Where I live has the worlds largest population of them.
Not everyone knows about the wolf thing, but different animals can easily replace "wolf" for the same effect. For example, in my response I mentioned harp seals. Harp seals are a species listed as least concern. Yes, they aren't hunted in the nicest way, but at least the species isn't about to being wiped of the Earth forever. They have plenty of time, while other species are hanging on by a thread, and could be gone by tomorrow. I believe that is the main message Chibi is trying to portray.

You could even replace wolf with white deer. Genetically white deer are still the same species as the normal brown deer in your area. I'm sure the population of regular colored deer is flourishing, so technically there is no urgent scientific/conservation need to save just the white deer. White deer are like white lions. Now, there are non scientific reasons for protecting some animals, which seems to be a big reason behind protecting a lot of white animals, deer included; however, unless listed as a separate species, it's unlikely they will receive anything beyond local protection.

As Trianna said she wasn't saying people should worry about wolves.... Witch if you even read what she typed you would have realized that she didn't say anything you thought...
No need to get all worked up. Trianna already corrected Chibi, who most likely read Trianna's post wrong, or interpreted it differently than what was meant.

  • Trianna: It was a misunderstanding, I thought she was implying she wanted more people to say it. I'm sorry Trianna, I'm just passionate about the subject, again, I am sorry. The worst thing about the internet is there is no inflection in anyone's typing, you can't tell how they're implying it.

Ponth: PrinceSushi already said it all, There was no need for you to jump in and get haughty, It was a misunderstanding.

Sushi: Exactly, I don't know if I have ever posted about this before here, but your right on the mark. It's not the wolves I mind so much as the people, it could be any animal. If everyone was obsessed and worshiping spiders and ignored animals that actually needed help I would be upset at that as well. I detest the way harp seals are hunted, and even though they are not endangered I do not believe that any animal should be clubbed to death, not even wolves should have to have that happen. I would understand if wolves were clubbed to death why people would be so hot and bothered, but they are not. People seem to be having heart attacks over wolves being aerial hunted, which I find not to be so bad. It's like cheating if your a normal hunter, but it's not especially cruel and it's a quicker way of regulating. And I found what you said to be very interesting. I would never thought that people would save a particular color of an animal. I assumed they were two different species.
A lot of white animals hold sacred religious meanings, so that's why they are often garner a lot of attention to be protected. White animals, like white bengal tigers and white siberian/bengal tiger crosses , also attract a LOT of attention, which is why zoos, farms, cities, individuals, etc. use them to bring in tourists, which then results in money.

You also have to remember that most of these white colored animals are created through artificial selection(very few make it to adulthood in the wild). In the case of the deers that Trianna was talking about, the website clearly states these deer live in a fenced area, which provides protection from hunters. However, I'm sure that because of the fence they are also protected from their natural predators as well, thus their numbers have reached massive proportions. No one is physically selecting which deer are bred, but what has caused the high density of white deer in that area is still artificial selection. Now, with animals like white bengals, these cats are selectively bred(or should I say inbred?), just like a person would select a pair of dogs.

Color is color, and in no way is it always an indicator of species. Though there are some technicalities, I like to think of it like breeds of dogs. Pomeranians can come in at least a dozen colors, but a merle pomeranian, or a black pomeranian, is still a pomeranian.

I wanted to add, I believe they are currently doing genetic testing on white lions to determine if they are actually a separate subspecies(supposedly there is some evidence), but as of right now, they are still listed as a color variation of a subspecies. White deer, and white Bengals are just color variations though.
Please don't misunderstand. This isn't really about wolves, particularly grey wolves, as a species, more about the people that choose to put the species on a pedestal.
It's also not about killing them, though thinning can sometimes be required to keep an ecosystem thriving. All animals should be saved, but not all animals should come first. What angers Chibi, myself, and other people, is that a lot of people give wolves(and other animals), particularly grey wolves, priority over other animals, and treat them like they are some kind of gods. In no means do we want to see them wiped out, or endangered again, but we aren't going boost them up to overshadow needy species.

My stand is that endangered species come first over animals that are well established. The grey wolf is listed as an animal of least concern by the IUCN, NOT near threatened, NOT vulnerable, NOR endangered. They have lost a lot of their habitat and range, but due to how versatile and widespread they are they have bounced back from being endangered, and are now doing just fine.

The quote I used in my first response, which is from Jacques Cousteau sums up how I feel about conservation, and what a conservationists job should be. Conservationists have to have priority, and be logical. In contrast an animal activist might value ethical, and emotional reasoning more than logical, and scientific reasoning.

"We have to be logical. We have to aim our activity first to the endangered species. Those who are moved by the plight of the harp seal could also be moved by the plight of the pig - the way they are slaughtered is horrible."

To sum it up, we don't hate wolves, nor want them dead. Some wolves and wild canines actually need help. The Maned Wolf listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN, or the Ehtiopian Wolf listed as endangered by the IUCN could use some of the attention and funding given to grey wolves.
