Strained Muscle?

edited July 2010 in Vent
I don't exercise a lot, but the heat wave seems to have motivated my body and mind, because suddenly I like exercise. I also haven't been to happy, so running takes my mind off all the stress I've been having. Day by day I've been increasing the speed at which I run, but I only go 10 minutes at a time (1-3 times a day).I was sore, especially yesterday, but today it felt like all, or near all, of the normal muscle ache was gone. I figured "This is good, I'll bump up the speed a bit more since I'm not sore." About 6 minutes into my 10 minutes run I get this sharp pain in the back up my leg, which makes me pull it up, which then nearly results in me falling(because the treadmill was set high). Thinking it was just a cramp(I am a bit out of shape), I kept going for the full 10 minutes, but now I'm beginning to believe that was a bad idea, since now it hurts just sitting. I think it's just a mild strain or something. I can feel a little tightness, but no major swelling, and no bruising....but now I'm not going to be able to run. It just really sucks. When I actually feel the drive to follow a routine, suddenly I can't!

Got any recommendations? Am I supposed to put a hot pack on it, or a cold pack? I can't remember.

 • Use a cold pack, it helps the muscle to recover and heal. Hot packs are used for relaxing healthy muscles after exercise. :]

 • Thanks! My mom, who is a nurse, said to use ice as well. It numbs it, and makes it so much more bearable, but I worry about stretching the muscle too much when I can't feel it, so I'm only icing when I know I'll be sitting/laying down for a decent amount of time.
Today wasn't as bad as last night. I have a slight limp because it hurts to bend my foot at certain angles while walking. I don't know how long I'm supposed to stay away from exercising, but I'm going to give it a good week, and then start exercising slowly. Feels like I'm starting all over. D:

 • When I have sore muscles I use icy hot stuff xD its hot at first then turns cold works WONDERFULLY I've used it many times xD
 • If you can you should also wrap a bandage or something around your leg so it stops any swelling. When resting, try to keep your leg above your heart, this way it shouldn't hurt as much - lie down on the sofa or on a bed and put a pillow under your leg. Hope you get better soon! :D
I use Walgreens brand of Icy Hot (called Cool 'n Heat, lol) for sore muscles too. I put some on my leg when I first hurt it, because I wasn't sure if I should be using an ice pack or hot pack.

I don't think it's bad enough to need a bandage, my mom offered last night and I said no. Today it's a lot better. I have little to no limp. It just feels tight when I try to walk normally. It's healing fast, so hopefully I really can get back to exercise in a week.

Thanks for all the help and advice~
