Guess who's in surgery?

edited July 2010 in General Discussion
Tar. He's being neutered today. I'm so nervous. When I brought him to the vet's this morning, the lady at the counter loved him, and some little boy wanted to pet him, but there were a ton of ladies with frufru rat dogs that were disgusted by him. It makes me angry.
I'm supposed to call in an hour and see if he's done.

And an extra little thing, it hurts reeal bad to fall on your tailbone. ;]

  • Hey there! im assuming he's your dog? i am a veterinary technician and have been working at clinics and with animals all my life.. I wanted to assure you that neuteres are possibly the easiest surgery their is, and that you have nothing to worry about. Your baby will be just fine
  • Pepper, I hope all goes well! Good luck with him <3

Heidy, Tar is Pep's rat, so she's just worried about having an operation on such a small animal.

Thanks for the lovely banner, Nickel :)
  • I agree with Heidy =) My chihuahua went through the same surgery when she was about two months old. It went perfectly fine and she came home a few days later =) She just had to take it easy for a while and be careful with her stitches. She was fully healed and ready to play around again within about a month =)
  • hah ok sorry for the confusion... when you said people with frufru dogs didnt seem to like him, i was assuming you had a big bulldog or mastiff :P either way, cats are our most common neuters and on average the youngsters weigh about 4lbs at the most... i also had 2 sugar glyders that i got spayed (the female) and neutered (the male). the smaller the animal, the easier it is... but i completely understand the worrying over having anything under anesthesia for any amount of time... but when theyre young and healthy, they all seem to have so much fight in them that they do great... just my two sense hehe.. and youre completely right Garnet. They heal up very quickly. Spaying a female is a bit more tough on them than what the boys have to go through. your baby should be up and ready to play around within the week.
  • Thanks so much everyone for your concern. <3 yes, tar is my rat. I wouldn't have had any concerns with the neuter if he wasn't so small. He weighs 1 lb. I have four huge dogs [one being a 170lbs great dane] and they've all been spayed and neutered. We work with the shelter, and I've sat through many spays and neuters before on cats and dogs. Everything went well, tar is completely goofy, since he just got off the anesthetics.[sp?]

  • I have frufru dogs, and I love ratties....though I'd never trust my dogs around a rat...you know, rats are like the same size as a toy.
I remember when I took my male to the vet during his last couple months of life(he was loosing control of his back legs), and one lady comes up, bends over to look in the tiny carrier and goes "Aww, do you have a kitten?" lol, she shot straight up when I went "No, it's a rat." She wasn't really afraid(though I imagine she wouldn't want to touch him), just surprised I was carrying around a rat.

Anyways, I'm so glad he's out and doing good.Once they are off the table, alive, and awake, that's when the worry starts draining away.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • They actually used something called Gluture instead of stitches. He's allowed to groom himself, and even pick at the glue. By the time he's able to pull it all off, the wound will be healed and the skin will be letting go of the glue, and if he doesn't pick it off, it will just dissolve over time. I already have him back in the cage with Bleach, he's doing great. He already shows ZERO aggression toward Ashe, my dumbo baby that he hated this morning. xP
I think I posted about scheduling his surgery, and people jumped all over me, telling me that the risks involved with small animal surgery were to large to risk it. And so far, it's been the best $57 I've spent on the rats. xD
He's MUCH calmer. It's probably just that he's still grogy, but let's hope he stays this way. :P
The only reason I was so nervous, is because he's so small, and I've raised him since he was 3 weeks old.. he usually still pulls some of my hair through the bars of the cage at night and holds onto it or makes a mini-nest out of it. I'll wake up sometimes with litteral rat nests in my hair. xD He was getting a bit aggressive, moreso than any other buck I've raised. None of my other babies ever showed me any sign of aggression, and the first time he made a move on my hand showing me that he was dominant, is when I scheduled his neuter. [:
I am COMPLETELY pro-spay/neuter. The first thing that happens when you hit the door of our house is getting altered(if you happen to be an animal) The vet used to come to the shelter after her hours and take a few cats/dogs to be neutered so they would become yard dogs(dogs with all shots/vaccinations/altered), that's where most of our donations went. I'd ride in the back of the car to the office with the animals, and watch over the surgeries, sometimes handing her a scalpel or a pack of stitches(Lord knows if watching over a few neuters/tumor removals was even legal). In a few years I plan on going to a Veterinary school and becoming an exotic vet, handling mostly small animals, birds and reptiles... but maybe I can get my hands on a monkey or tiger someday.. maybe. >]
