My beagle [:

Okay, I have a question. Does anyone know if 30 lbs. is a healthy weight for a 8 year old, male Beagle? Personally, I think he's looking a little chunky, but I'd like to be sure he's not like, massively overweight. Here's some pics [: He's adorable.

<a href="http://i27.tinypic.com/1zfneoj.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i27.tinypic.com/1zfneoj.jpg
<a href="http://i25.tinypic.com/2r5b6ee.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i25.tinypic.com/2r5b6ee.jpg
<a href="http://i27.tinypic.com/2hx26gy.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i27.tinypic.com/2hx26gy.jpg
<a href="http://i28.tinypic.com/1zm2vyo.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i28.tinypic.com/1zm2vyo.jpg
<a href="http://i32.tinypic.com/i2r974.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i32.tinypic.com/i2r974.jpg
<a href="http://i30.tinypic.com/2sb7coy.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i30.tinypic.com/2sb7coy.jpg;

 • Well, according to standard he is only 5lbs overweight. You have to be really careful because Beagles are known to overeat and often get obese.

He looks great though! Maybe take him on some jogs if you are capable and look at the fat content of what you're feeding him.

A light beagle is a happy beagle and since he is a bit older, Iw ould try to get his weight bow to about 22-23lbs.

<3 Hope that helps.

 • Yeah, I've heard that Beagles overeat a lot so I stopped feeding him from the table. (horrible habit I know) And I'll see if I can get him out for more walks [: Thanks!

 • You can't just go by weight, size needs to be a factor too since not all dogs are bred to the exact standard the AKC and other clubs set up. I think pomeranians are supposed to weigh 3-8 lbs, but I have a bigger one that weighs more than that. Though my pom is a little over weight at the moment, even at his healthy weight he'd still be about twice the maximum accepted standard.

Your beagle does look a little plump in the pictures, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've seen way fatter beagles. Just start taking him on walks or play with him more if your backyard is large enough, and don't feed him table scraps.

Extra weight or no extra weight, he's really pretty. I love his profile.

 • thanks [: He isn't all that interested in his toys anymore, regrettably, so I'll see if I can fit in some more walks during the week [:

 • Lol he is cute. He is a bit of a chunker though.. maybe start feeding him about 80% what he gets now and see what happens within a week. That's the best way.

 • Plus you should probally ask your vey exactly how much he is over wieght and have professional advice as 1 pound over wight to an animal is like 20 for a human...Also try smaller portions of pet food and just really exercise him.

I have a chihuahua(sp?) and he CAN"T gain weight so its frustrating to get him to eat and eat right. He looks skinny but he is extremely hyper and healthy. :D SO getting your dog a little leaner could make him feel beeter in the long run as he gets older.

Hope i could help.

 • Yeah.. but a part of owning a dog or any animal for that matter is learning how to eyeball the shape its in. Some people prefer to see a bit of ribs but no hip bones, but then again, a dog can be slightly underweight and be in great shape. Imo it's better for a dog to be slightly underweight than overweight as long as its getting good food everyday.

If you put your hands over his back and let your fingers press in his oblique areas behind his rib cage, you should be able to feel ribs. If you can't, he's too fat. :) Hope that helps.

 • Thanks for all the help guys [:

Reina_: He already gets 2 cups of kibble a day? Would it still be healthy to cut that? And I did that and I can feel his ribs, but they're not extremely noticeable....

Majestic_Gryphon: My parents won't take him to a vet >.< He's been to the vet maybe twice in his life. For shots, and to get neutered. It's a big problem between me and my parents.

 • Well they shouldn't be extremely noticeable.

They're kind of dark pictures so maybe he isn't overweight, but looks to be by looking at his neck and over his shoulder and rump. Does he ONLY eat 2 cups or are you supplementing his diet with treats/scraps, etc? If not, yeah cut it down to 1 and 3/4 of a cup and see how he does for a week.

 • I've told my brothers to stop, but they're still feeding him table scraps >.< I just caught my brother feeding him pizza. PIZZA! Ugh, we usually don't have dog treats, I've trained him with his kibble haha. But I'll cut it down. And sorry the pics are dark, he doesn't like camera flashes and I took those earlier in the morning when my blinds were shut
