My Dog?

edited May 2010 in Vent
Well just recently she has been getting this weired coughing spell every once in a while. Like at night it';s really bad. She just lays there and sounds like she is dying. I thought it might be a collapsed trachea, but that sounded to unreasonable. She is a 2 year old female Chi. Every time a spell comes up she freezes and sticks her head out and a weired sound comes out of her nose. Almost like she has asthma. Any suggestions? The only exercise she has gotten is a little bit of agility training just basic low jumps. And it started about 4 days ago. Help?<br><br>Thanks for reading

  • Has she been checked for heartworm or is she on medicine for it? Although I don't think that is usually a quick onset. I would say take her to the vet.

  • I would definitely take her to the vet, sometimes respiratory problems can get serious quickly.

  • Is it like a hyperventilating sound?<br>Several breeds of dogs do this, PM me if you want to know what it sounds/looks like. So I can identify it for you. xD<br>If it is hyperventilating put two fingers on her nose and she should stop, we do that for our dogs.
  • Reverse sneezing is common in some small breeds. All my poms(a breed known to do it) have done it for various reasons from allergies, excitement, over exertion, and so on. Sometimes it seems random. Generally it sounds kind of like snorting and looks like the dog is trying to catch their breath in quick inhales, but unable to. I like to compare it to a human trying to breath through their nose when it's real stuffy(like when you have allergies or a cold). I always stop whatever they were doing and massage my dogs' throat when it happens. Most of the time reverse sneezing is nothing to worry about. It definitely scares owners who have never experienced it before. <br><a href="http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIPS/DogTip_ReverseSneezing.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIPS/DogTip_ReverseSneezing.html</a><br><br>Your description sounds a lot like reverse sneezing, but if it's happening a lot, and for long periods(more than a minute or so) it could be something else. I'd take her to the vet just to make sure it's not pneumonia, a sinus infection, heart worm(like Alabama said), heart failure, allergies, kennel cough, something stuck in her throat, or a problem with the trachea.

  • I think its reverse sneezing becasue it sounds like a human trying to breathe through a stuff nose. She is on heartworm medication but not flea. In the past when we used her sized flea medicine she almost dies. Vomited/Diahhrea for 5 days. Thanks guys
  • If you think that's it, try calling your vet to get more info on it. The signs of reverse sneezing are common is other conditions as well. More than likely your vet could probably tell you over the phone if your describing reverse sneezing. <br><br>What kind of flea medication were you using? I use the kind that goes between the shoulders, and I've never had a problem. That's another thing I'd call your vet about. <br><br>Good luck~

  • Does you phone record sound? If you can record the sound and play it over the phone for you vet they might be able to have a mroe specific idea for you? Also, it sounds like your dog has a sensitivity or allergy to the flea medication. The flea pill is notorious for it, have you tried Frontline or Advantage? When I spoke to a representative of their company I was told specifically that Frontline was nontoxic to mammals, because of the may it works and how it is really only effective if you don't have a dermis... but that wouldn't help if your dog has an allergy D:

  • Reverse sneezing that's what it's called. xD<br><br>If you put two fingers in both airways of the nose, that should stop it.<br>My grandmas dog and our dogs do it when they get excited, and putting two fingers on their nose stops it immediately.
  • She was on Advantage Multi for 3-9 pounds.
  • Since the past day or 2 it has gotten really bad every few seconds it goes off again.
  • <span style="font-size:92">Take her to the vet.. none of us can really help you if your dog falls over dead because she can't breathe. Just sayin. It very well could be asthma, my stepgrandparents have an ancient chihuahua with asthma, and she sounds like death all the time.</span>

  • ok, my parents never take animals to the vet unless its a checkup. I believe they assume dogs never get sick..
  • And I know you guys are not vets but know she is vomiting white foam with yellow mucus and having muscle spasms and shivering and its 95 degrees.
  • That's REALLY BAD. Call your vet right now. Seriously.

  • Sorry, I can't we think its just chocolate poisoinibng from last night.
  • If it's poisoning she needs her stomach pumped.<br>My boyfriend's pup just died from poisoning, and I assure you - you don't want that to happen.
  • I know my dad never wants to take dogs to the vet. She wont eat even bill jac she usually goes nuts for.
  • Well look, there are two things you can do. Take her to the vet, or don't take her even though you need to go. Would your father respond to the knowledge that a failure to get vet care in this circumstance can qualify as animal abuse?

  • I'm sure your old enough to at least <span style="font-style:italic">call</span> a vet. Any vet. For any advice.<br>My parents never take the dogs for a check up, but if they are dying then they take them. They paid close to 100$ for my Bama Lizard's check up and eventually putting to sleep all together. All for a lizard.<br>If this is life threatening you at least want her death to be painless.<br><br>Tell the vet your situation, he/she will understand. And then tell your parents that she could possibly be dying.<br>For now I would recommend slowly giving her water with a spoon to keep her hydrated or even give her a cool bath if she's up for it.<br>I would also recommend laying with her and putting a blanket around her with maybe some warm water bottles just to keep her comfortable.<br>Since there isn't much information on what this could be that's the best advice I can give you.<br>What does her poo look like?<br>(This is going to sound gross) but is it bloody, mucous like, does it have anything white in it. anything out of the ordinary?<br>She could also have intestinal problems. <br><br>What breed is she?<br>If she is a small dog with brachycephalic (flat face) like a french bulldog, english bulldog, pug, etc. then she could have some major issues trying to breathe. And usually those breeds will throw up if overheated.<br><br>I will look for some links online and see what I can find, I hope she will make it! And I understand there isn't much you can do being young.
  • She seems better now the vomiting stopped but she is really lathargic. Sh eis female 2 year old Chi. I googled all of her symptoms to. Her waste is runny with lumps of multi colored stuff
