I've made a decision! UPDATE: Last post

edited May 2010 in General Discussion
I originally wanted an English Bulldog, but none of the breeders I contacted stood out except for one, however, the pups where already at 5 weeks of age and so I decided to look into unborn pups/younger pups that way I have more time (because I am moving in mid July-August)...I found one(not an English Bulldog breeder)...but, it's an Olde English Bulldogge breeder (they live longer, can naturally birth, unlike the EB and where bred to resemble the first EB's) - her current litter is about 6 days old and I was scrolling and just looking about her website and I fell in love<3

<img src="http://i50.tinypic.com/2uz81n6.jpg"; alt="http://i50.tinypic.com/2uz81n6.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

It's a good thing I have already been saving up because he's gonna cost me 2,800$.
On the other hand if he gets purchased before I get my deposit in I still plan to purchase from his same litter or wait for future litters. I don't want to rush into 'OMG, I'm getting him!!!' But, for now, he is the one I am wanting. And if everything goes against me to get one this time around, I will be going to this breeder in the future. The breeder also told me that they will be potty trained before they go to their new homes and will also know simple commands such as come, sit, stay, etc. hopefully I can get my deposit in this week.
I'll keep you guys updated. :D

  • Is the breeder local so you don't have to worry about scams and what not? Is she/he reputable?

I hope you get him. Even as a pup he's quite pretty.
I love blue.

Good luck, and keep us updated!
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • How old will the puppy be when you get them? Dogs can't be potty trained until at least 12 weeks they don't have spincter control until then before that it's a matter of getting them outside at regular intervals. He is adorable though. What health tests have been done? How do they select for temperment? Not trying to put you off or anything just basics. I wouldn't get a puppy older than 8 weeks 12 max in a toy breed. 8-12 weeks is a very important socialisation period and it's very hard for a breeder with say 6+ puppies to do all the socialisation required
  • I live in a small town so there are close to no breeders around here that breed EB's and/or Olde English Bulldogs I found one EB breeder who is about 4+ hours away, but they have no available/upcoming litters.

She is reputable, she works closely with another breeder and all her pups are paper trained or fully potty trained (it just depends on the pup) she has them home raised and works on them one-on-one.
She said they can ship at 8 weeks.
She's asking all the questions a breeder should, she gave me her number, she's showing me pictures of the babies, parents, etc.
She only has two litters at the moment from different parents, one litter is 4 weeks if I remember correctly and then this litter is 6 days.
I asked about the testing this morning, as well any references I can contact. Just waiting for a reply.
She also has a website.

This is very interesting to me - I have heard that 8 weeks is the bare minimum for large breeds and that from a purely nutritional basis forcing them to be weaned before that is biologically detrimental and related to many health problems we accept as standard in dogs today. However, I'm always learning, so I was just wondering if you had any sources on hand you could show me? I love reading more about dogs :)

By the way, I love Olde English Buldogges - you seem like you have put a great deal of thought into this and I am sure you know all of the basics involved in getting a dog intelligently, so I will only offer you the best of luck! I have a vast and boring knowledge of canine and feline nutrition and would be more than happy to talk to you or show you information regarding nutrition and how it all ties together biologically if you like, just PM me lol. I would hate to clog up VP with my "pet food iz teh ebils D:<" rant lol.

  • She sounds like a good breeder definately just get the references off her see if there are any of her puppies close by that you can go see.

Puppies start weaning at 4 weeks most mums have gotten sick of them feeding off her at 6 and they're definately weaned physically at 8. It's more training from mum and the litter mates beyond 6 weeks. I'll ask a couple of breeder friends for links on info if you want but I know my foster cocker bitch wouldn't let them feed from 6 weeks and they were more than to go at 8
  • Finally, here is information on the life history of a dog, including the recommendation that weaning occur no earlier than 3 weeks and no later than 7 weeks, depending in part on the size of the litter:
<a href="http://www.lookd.com/dogs/history.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.lookd.com/dogs/history.html;

Just what i found when searching Xae, i believed as you did that they shouldn't be weaned that early but... yeah.

Mine aren't weaned until around 7-8 weeks at least. But they're a small breed with many problems, just as EBs are...[/quote]

Thank you. XD

The breeder said 2 other people are wanting him, so I have to get my deposit in within 2 weeks. 0_0
But, she is very understanding and is holding him for me when she usually does first deposit first serve.
  • He's adorable. Even if you can't get him you could probably get a littermate or one from another litter

I told the breeder that if someone else gets a deposit in first that I am willing to purchase another litter mate, as I don't want her to lose a buyer who is interested in him and is not willing to buy a litter mate.
However, me and her have been talking for about 3 days and she dropped the deposit down to 200$ for me - I was shocked yet happy at the same time. :D
Because she was telling me how she purchased her first bully at the age of 11 with her own money, even though I am 7 years older than that I've been saving 50% of work money for like 2 months. XD
  • Omgish he is adorable. Im like squealing over the pictures. "look at his little toes and his little tail and his little face". He is soo immensely cute. I hope things work out.
  • So you're getting him whoo. I can't wait to see the pictures when he's older
  • Aww the puppy is adorable. Wait until he gets big enough to walk around and sit, that's when the big wrinkles will appear! Haha he's gorgeous. I can't get over the little tongue out of mouth and the scrunched muzzle. *sighs* I love bulldogs. Sally is just a lazy one xD but fun when you have the water hose. -Crazy-

I'm glad you're getting a bulldog. I can say from personal experience that if you get one you will have a hard time finding another breed with as much personality ;D.

Olde English Bulldog? Sally is an English Bulldog. I'm not a dog expert so I don't exactly know the difference, but I think Olde get bigger. Yeah?

Either way, good luck Alva!

  • @Native-Olde English Bulldogge where bred to resemble the First English Bulldogs. They are a little bit bigger, live longer, can birth naturally, etc. etc. :P

SO here's an update, since I had my surgery last week (the week I was suppose to get my deposit in). Well, I couldn't get it in because of surgery and I haven't been able to cash my checks. The breeder sent me updated pictures Wednesday I think that's when it was, apparently Angelo is still available. His eyes have opened and he's is just a doll! However, the breeder has not replied to my message since last week. So she's either busy or ignoring it.

HOWEVER, I have some CRAZY news - my boyfriend works for his Uncle's friend (let's call his uncles friend Billy, because I don't know his real name xD), well my boyfriend told Billy that I have been looking for an English Bulldog and Billy was like "Hey, I know a breeder of English Bulldogs" O_O YOU WHAT!? I was spazzing, he said we could get one for free, if not at a low price since his wife and the breeder are like BFF or something to that effect. So my boyfriend is getting the breeders number and email this week when he goes into work. And the good thing is this breeder is LOCAL!!! :D

If I decide against this breeder and I do not get a reply from the OEB breeder then I plan to just go to a shelter and adopt in August. :)

This process has been complicated than I thought. XD
