Rattie Food?

edited March 2010 in General Discussion
What do y'all feed your ratties? I've been feeding mine some blend from petco, and they went through it extremely fast. And it's $10 a(small) bag. Just wondering, what else is safe/cheap for rats?

  • We bought like Kaytee blend from PetSmart, though I think you can buy it from any petstore. Was like, 3$ something for a bag... lasted ours a week or so.

  • Kaytee is my favorite brand for basic mix food and lab blocks. I buy it from either petco or petsmart. I buy the biggest bags. I think they are about $8.
To keep her from getting bored with her food I also feed my rat cat/dog food(cat food is more fattening though), cereal, bread/toast, oat meal, vegetables, fruit, plain pasta, and rice. For special treats I generally give her a some type of chip like a cheeto or tortilla chip, a puppy biscuit, or a french fry(if I've brought home fast food).

Mixing in food from home(like what I listed above) is a good way to make brand food last longer.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • Im not sure how much it weighed xD I havent had a rat in a while. And we fed ours things from around the house too for snacks, so that probably helped.

  • I have dishes of rat mix in the cages that have dog and cat biscuits in the mix cause they love them and then I feed them fresh fruit or veg once a day like carrot, pumpkin (but only rarely) rockmelon etc and i also feed them cooked pasta... I have no idea what nutritional value it has for them, I dont give them heaps but they love it... and they havent changes over the 6 months ive been feeding that to them..

Also I bought a bag of dried banana from the supermarket and i give them bits for treats and mix a little bit in with their rat mix.

Hope that helped.
  • I usually get a bag that has all kinds of carrots, peanuts, etc. (not just pellets) and mix it with a small bag of dog food.
