• My rat shreds her own newspaper if i put a sheet in and makes her own bed, so i believe the bedding is fine. Also I dont know if rats can drink out of bowls i dont believe they can... but i think its best to just get one of those hanging drinking dripper bottles for them, they probably had on in the pet shop and know how to get the water.

Congrats on getting that much closer to being a rattie owner xD
  • Thanks! I think either way I'm gonna put a water bowl in there. I want to train him in swimming and possibly race him? We have neighborhood pet competitions so...
But how small do the holes between the bars need to be? Should I let him out alot the first day?

  • Well i just got a normal rat cage id say the bars are no wider than my finger.. so thats probably a good thing. And on the first day with my bfs rat we just sat in the middle of the lounge room and watched him run over us.. I dont know if its good to let them out heaps or what but i think just let him out as much as you feel he can take, if hes really frightened probably not the best, but if hes boisterous and loves exploring i cant see the harm, but make sure youre watching him at all times when you first do get him and let him out of course :D
  • You need to have the cage wires NO WIDER than 1/2 an inch.
Oh, and when looking for a cage, make sure the bottom of the cage isn't wire. And, if you get a wheel, make sure it's all plastic.
If you only get one, just get a 10 gallon tank. If you get two, either a.) get a 20g tank OR a tank topper.

This is the same exact one me AND my sister have.
They're great!
<a href="http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=17073&cmpid=08csepg&ref=3475&subref=AA&srccode=cii_5784816&cpncode=22-37559717-2"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... 37559717-2

-Kaley and PB&J

  • Lol, if you want a water bowl for like, swimming in... That'd be fine, but don't expect him to drink out of it XD When Jasper had one in his cage, he just kept tipping it over and making a mess, so for drinking I'd recommend a bottle.

Agreed.

  • Oh and if you want to train him to swim, I wouldn't put the bowl actually IN his cage as he'd most likely just tip it over, and wet bedding is not good xD

and about the cage, I don't know if it helps but this is the one Jasper has:
<img src="http://video.zootoo.com/prod/32000/thumbs175/prod_32219.jpg"; alt="http://video.zootoo.com/prod/32000/thumbs175/prod_32219.jpg"; class="bb-image" />
and it seems to be ok for him. The bars are a little smaller than the width of my fingers.

  • Ok. xP I would definately have a bottle if I had a bowl in there for him to swim in. His cage is like, huge. I'll get pics later. I might end up having to use a bird cage though, but what's the difference?
I'm just excited. 8D

Why does the bottom have to be a tank? I think the air ventilation down the bottom is great, rats dont smell much but the extra ventilation helps i think..

This is the cage i have for my rattie -

<a href="http://www.ratclub.org/shop/images/cg_masterpet.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.ratclub.org/shop/images/cg_masterpet.jpg; < except theres full access to all levels, that one looks like its seperated into 2 condos.

Also Jazz, does your rat use the wheel? neither of mine or my bfs rats use it...
  • he used to use it when he was younger... now he's fat and lazy and doesn't touch it lol.

Well, sometimes he climbs on and sits there for a few minutes without moving XD

I'd take it out but it's attached to his cage.

  • I'm gonna have to agree with everyone, they only drink out of hanging water bottles...
Aaand, I wouldn't recommend newspaper if you're getting an albino...
sometimes they get it wet with water or pee or saliva and it dyes their perdy white fur xD
Alsooo, I'm not sure if it's widely known, but they will use a litter box
(just a helpful tidbit that I wish I'd known when I first got my ratties)
And DON'T take them out AT ALL the first day, they need to relax,
some rats will be fine being handled all the time, but some need a day to chill...
A friend of mine's rat had a stress-induced heart attack because they took it out to play right away.
Sorry if that was oober, long, but I wasn't trying to avoid being long-winded today ;D

  • rats cant use water bowls, get a rodent water bottle :] oh, and, I noticed wheel comments and I reiterate, it absolutely must be a wheel larger than a hamster or mouse one, as those hurt their backs ^^ other than that, have fun with your rattie <3

  • I'm a little skittish around rats/mice, but I am really interested in a rat for some reason. <3 I hear they can be very sweet, and I love that they're larger than hamsters or mice. ;D

:D I think I'm gonna try and bribe my mom to get me one. <3 But, first, I'd have to get over my fear.
  • Ludie they make really good pets :P They're super smart, and sweet, and don't bite unless they weren't raised right.

I might possibly be getting another one :P Probably a girl, since I'd have to get another cage anyways since a.) Jasper's most likely won't hold another rat and b.) I'm not sure about introducing another, younger male rat to him since he's a year old already...

Also I miss my Jynx and even though I love Jasper dearly and wouldn't trade him for the world, if I were to get another one I kind of want another female :P
    2dbtohy.png
  • The female i have jazz is awesome, I dont know about if your male does these things, cause my boyfriends doesnt, but shes done them since i got her as a kitten. She has 2 cages one tank and one wire bar cage, if she on top of the tank lid when i put her up there for a run around on the tv cabinet and stuff, if you walk past shell sit on the edge and just put her arms up for a cuddle its so funny... and she shreds paper like crazy... its like her favourite past time. she shoves it all in her little house and then she cant fin in there anymore, its hilarious.

I'm sure males do different things to females, but you will enjoy the female just as much. =]
  • He's hooome! I take him out twice a day. Very sweet. Litter trained himself. I saved him from being snake food. I'll take and post some pictures now

  • Pepper; Pictures?! :D I'd love to see him.

Jazz; If I get a rat/rats, it'd/they'd be females. I want two females. <3 Apparently they do better with another rat cause they're very social and taking care of two is like taking care of one. :)
