Cat Preference

What do you prefer? Male or female? Short-haired or long-haired? I, myself, prefer long-haired males. And I own two short-haired females... xD I find long-haired cats shed LESS. And males are more affectionate...

But I keep looking for a cat. Maybe it's because Lily, one of our females, has been stirring up a hell of a lot of trouble and being a downright bad cat. D: We're pondering getting rid of her... but it's hard. I want my own cat, and she's supposed to mine right now (even if she hates me).

So I was just wondering what was better.

  • Haha. My two short-haired females shed like crazy.

Question: Do indoor males spray? I know that they can, intact or neutered, but do indoor ones?
  • I like long-haired males xD (well.. if they are neutured) We used to have an EXTREMELY long-haired ginger persian male. He was great as a kitten.. but moody as he got older xD He adored us really.. just couldnt show it  only problem is that they are HELL to groom & wash xD erg.. espesically a moody one. But.. I wouldnt of changed him for the world.. He would sleep with me at night.. Great hot-water bottle :D

  • I only like long-haired because most are softer and shed less. Plus, I love burying my face in their soft, long hair. (:

We used to have a long-haired orange tabby male. He was gorgeous. But MAN! He was mean. D: He eventually went cross-eyed and we had to put him down because he'd attack laundry piles, dogs, furniture, and younger kids. At the time, my mom did a lot of babysitting and didn't want any of the little kids getting hurt. I never did like Buddy, but it was sad when we had to put him to sleep.

So, now I want a new male kitty. D=
  • I prefer long haired cats, male or female. I currently have two DLHs and a Siamese. Two females and a male.

Destiny is the seal point Siamese and probably the best behaved cat and somewhat lovable.
Angel is a brown tabby DLH. She has quite a few behavioral issues. She's my most affectionate. But she only likes me.
Oden is my only male. He's a huge orange tabby DLH. He is lovable only when he wants to be loved on. lol

Back to the original question. Again, I prefer long haired cats but I have no gender preference. If I ever get a purebred cat it will be a Maine Coon. Although, you will never see me spending money for a purebred cat. lol
  • I like long-haired cats but of the three I own, only one is. My other two are short haired torties. As for gender, it doesn't matter to me. If a cat looks really cute and is loveable, I will want that one. There have been really pretty long haired males and females I've come across. I think I may prefer males a little more but I never owned a male. All mine are female. xD

  • I've noticed males have a more frequent loveable side than females... xD
I've had both, and the male was always more affectionate (excluding evil Buddy).

Yesterday, when I found a mouse and named him Preston, I was like O_O OMG if I get a male kitty I shall name him Preston! It's a nice, simple name that sounds kinda elegant if you think about it... which is what a cat is like! =D HAHA.

Anyway. Mother says "male cats spray though!" Well, I also know for a fact females can too; if they've learned from another cat. I want an indoor, neutered male... do you think he would spray?
  • No clue. My parents always say thats why we can't get a male. xD

If I get a male kitty, depending on how he looks, I want to name him Lucifer xD. Aka, lucy! rofl. There was this gorgeous tan cat (not sure on breed) and he had these beautiful blue eyes. The thing about his eyes were that they were strange! It almost looked like he had his eyes crossed but in a way that gave him character. I wanted to name him Dexter and take him home so bad. xD

Oh! 8D Must answer question!

If you get an indoor male, that is only an indoors cat, at a young age you have to get it nutered before it can get the chance to spray. If you have the cat and it sprays then nuter it, it'll still spray, but we got our cats nutered younger so they don't do that. If they did, my mom would have a fit. xDD

  • I like whatever I see at the shelter. xD
Every once in a while while I'm volunteering one will just catch my attention and I will go play with them (I mainly work with the small pets or dogs). It's sad because there are sooo many really nice adults cats out there but people want kittens. :(

I actually don't play with kittens much. xD They are too wild and crazy and I get clawed and bleed (not because they are mean but because they are playing). I like mellow adult cats. xD

I noticed that orange cats tend to be super lovable!
    Please PM if I win.

  • Okay, thanks for the answers. ;D

Boz, I want to get an adult from the shelter because then I don't have to rely on "what ifs" with a kitten. What if my kitten isn't as loving as I thought it would be? What if, what if, what if. xD Which is why I would like to get an OBVIOUSLY loving male kitty from the pound...

but if people are saying they won't spray if they're neutered young; maybe I should get a kitten in case... D: I don't know!
  • My 2 year old kitten was a stray that the ranger's found with her mum and brother when they were like, only a few weeks old.
I was doing work experience at the vet when they put her up for adoption, so I bought her for dad for father's day.
Although she kinda became mine. xD

I like short-haired females [is the odd one out] because we have always had females so I just go with it. lmao. L'e is a short hair, but she sheds a lot, but I think she mostly does because of the humidity up here.
She didnt use to shed so much before we moved.

Ludie buy me a Russian Blue! <3

  • I work at an animal shelter, and I fall in love with a cat every time I go in xD

The one I really wanted, he was just plain huge (not fat, just a big cat) he was so sweet <3 someone ended up almost adopting him that day... so I believe he didn't have to wait too long for a home anyway <3

I also fell in love with a grey/white LH male kitten. He was very mellow, he fell asleep on my lap xD I was like DDD: My kitty! Sadly, my parents dont like cats, so the shelter is the only way I ever get to associate with any. Therefore, I don't know much about owning a cat.. but I will say I like Long haired anyway... and I seem to fall in love with males at the shelter... most of the females tend to be more hostile it seems like xD
All good things must come to an end. All endings will begin new good things.

  • Simmy; I'd send you a Russian Blue, but before I could stick the postage stamp on his nose I'd have second thoughts and probably run off to Far Far Away with him. D; xD

Nickel; I LOVE HUGE CATS. I hate fat ones xD but the just all-around large cats are my favorite. One of my best friends has a large cat (much bigger than my smallest dog) and he's longhaired. They named him Fluffy, but I always forget his name and end up calling him Fatty. Lmao. YUS! You've proven my point. Male cats are more loving. <33 Haha.
  • I had two female, long-haired blue persians <3
they were just the cutest things, most affectionate things .

my late grandmother was a breeder, we chose one from her, and decided to take another, too, because her feet were backwards !

long story short, they were wonderful cats .
    name is britti elizabeth :D
  • I have two black short-haired females. Though you would think they were long haired with the amount of hair they shed x.x

I have found they are much more affentionate than the male cats my relatives have. Those thing hat to be touched.

My cats, well, think of a toddler whining until it gets to sit on your lap or until you pick it up. Now instead of a toddler doing that, think of a cat xD And yep, thats my cats. It's kind of annoying at times.
  • I prefer shorthaired females. Females of most domesticated animal species seem to be more hyperactive. xD Males are more loving and such.

We had a female cat who sprayed. D< Annoying thing.
