• Lets see, I have 2 labs. They are pretty big dogs, and are very loyal. Mine don't run away, we let them loose all the time, they have short hair, they do need excercise but their not too hyper. The only thing is, one of my labs would lick a robber to death, and my other is very protective. She does a "burglar bark" every time somone that she doesn't know enters our property.

  • thank you i have worked with labs befor and i used to have one and they don't give off that stay away look that i am aiming for. i know its not good to steryo type dogs but those steryo types exist and i would like one that works to my advantage even if the big scarry rottie is really saying come in lets play most people dumb enough to break in are dumb enough to belive in the steryo type. thank you for your suggestion though.

i love labs by the way they are so great with kids, just not what i am looking for.
  • It must be difficult, trying to find a big dog that can cope with an apartment, but have german shepards been suggested? I cant remember the already posted breeds.

  • yes, back when i lived in Philly our next door neighbor had 4 which i personally thought was too much for his space and tiny yeard but he walked them 10 times a day for 30 minutes to an hour. he has offered to let me take one of his full grown males if i want it.
  • I would go for the German Shepherd. they make great protection dogs and most people don't want to mess with them. A Doberman is also a great dog.

  • as already suggested, german, dobie or...

Siberian husky?

a close friend of mine just bought one and he's super good with the kids and other dogs. great pup. my dog is half siberian and definately has a protective streak when he needs to. also a great family dog.

  • A good guard dog is a Hovawart, sadly it would have problems with youre climate... have a look though ^.^ If you are considering a GS. What about a mutt? My 'dog' is a lab, dobie, GS mix.. o.o wow. Hes extremly friendly and stuff, but Has a low bark, and is curious.. good for when sales people come to the door xD He wants to say hello, and they think hes trying to get at them  He is quite dominant, but loyal, and need firmness. If you are relaxed, he is fine, but Id say if you were tense and worries, and become aggresive..

  • I think if you are looking for Great dog a dachshund is the best choice lol i have had many dachshunds as well as labs and other dogs but i loved the dachshund the best. They are protective of their owners and stuff. They are also easy to train ...as far as i have trained. They are very loyal and are easy to take care of. also when your looking for someone for compassion or other they are small enough to crawl into your lap and snuggle with you. i guess they arent that big but they are fast and are very protective as i said so i think thats what you should get even if they are small they have a big bark and bite.

I think she's asking for a large breed.
Doxies aren't the best dog for everyone - they are diggers who require a backyard. They have high energy and although they are good guard dogs - mine eats clothing, gets in the trash, food aggression, and he is the most stubborn thing in the world.(he was rescue though, so that could be the problem) They are a little more for the experienced owner, though.
  • as for the siberian husky suggestion, i worked 2 of them and they are a little high strung for the space i would have and shed a bit much. i had considered them.

as for the mutt idea i am more than willing to get a mutt, i am more so looking for suggestions so i can pick the best mix or pure bred for my needs.

doxies are cute but they don't really have that stay away intimidation thing that i am looking for with living in a high crime area.

and also just a side note, there is a market for pitt bull theft in this area and so there for i am not going to knowingly bring one into that bad situation.
  • Pittie was my first instinct but with having little bitty kids around, i ruled them out. **Not to say that a good one could not be a perfect dog around children, But i myself would not take the risk with thier nature. I've actually got a pitt mutt pup though and he's wonderful with everyone =D**

  • i don't mind pitts i just have heard of stories of them being stolen because they are known for fighting and since the point in having a dog is to prevent a break in i don't want to buy a dog to encourage a break in lol. my dream would be to get a canis panther but i can't shell out the 5k for a pup when rent will be a struggle.
  • My best guess is to just go to your local humane society and pick a dog that fits your standards the closest. They say rescue dogs are some of the most loyal, and loyalty leads to protection :D

  • A dane would be great in an apartment that would allow it. They're EXTREMELY calm and all roscoe does is sleep.

  • thank you pepper. i did some research on them and they seem to fit pretty well with what i am looking for
yes everyone i am trying to get a rescue first, i just want to have an idea of what i am looking for so i can be a good pet owner and make the choice that is both right for me and the dog before i just blindly pick something
  • My first pick would be a great dane.
But also i think boxers would be nice to.
But some do look like pit bulls.
So poeple may try and steal them like you said?
I had a dane when i was really little.
She was GREAT!

  • Not all Great Danes are good in apartments. Some Danes are really laid back and some are VERY hyper. Mine is extremely hyper.. he's 4 years old and still acts like a puppy. I walk/run him constantly but he still has unlimited energy. Danes can also have a lot of health problems, lol.. I'd suggest a German Shepherd, Boxer, Rottweiler, normal guard breeds. Danes are not good guard dogs.

-edit- I live in a kind of crappy neighborhood and people are constantly asking me if I want to sell, breed, giveaway my dog. No one is scared of him.. they just want me to breed him to their Pit Bulls. Most people know Danes aren't mean dogs.

  • Agreed with 3E, Danes are too large for an apartment - their tails could end up breaking everything. I would suggest a breed with a docked tail. Boxers also suffer from a lot of health problems so if you buy from a breeder make sure you know the bloodlines and ask to see previous litters, parents, etc.
  • i think right now a rottie would be my number one choice. thank you everyone though this is really helpful. my boyfriend really wants a boxer though or a pug  bless his heart he doesn't know much about dogs but i love him anyone
  • Yep, I'd go with a normal guarding breed. i.e. GSD, Doberman, Rottweiler. Honestly, like others have said, stop by a local shelter and see what they have to offer. I live in a tiny town and we always have purebred dogs at our shelter.
  • I would probably go with Giant Schnauzer, or Akita inu, these are both great breeds that have good protection skills, and they are great with kids and other dogs.

Hope this helps
:)
  • Newfoundlands are VERY protective when someone gets in the way of their owners, and still great family dogs.
I would recommend a Shiba, but they are somewhat hard to find, and they aren't real good city dogs because if they get out they have a big chance of never getting back.
So here are my main ideas for you::

*Newfoundland
*Great Pyrenees
*Doberman
*Akita
*Chow Chow (unpredictable dogs sometimes, very very protective)
*Golden Retriever (VERY protective dogs, on the top ten dog breeds to bite people.)
*German Shepherd
*English Springer Spaniel (Get very attached to owners.)

Just some ideas :) I've had most of these dog breeds as pets in the past so I know all this from past experience. Most don't seem like the average protection dog, but trust me they are!

Newfs make great apartment dogs, as long as they get regular walks, they tend to be on the lazy side :) also the Chows are great with apartments too.

  • *Newfoundland too much hair and would not do well with the climate
*Great Pyrenees same as above
*Doberman
*Akita
*Chow Chow Climate no suitable
*Golden Retriever doesn't really have that frightening look i am going for i am looking to play on the dogs steryo type or look even if it isn't true
*German Shepherd
*English Springer Spaniel i know these dogs are overly hyper as one of my exes had one named spencer and my uncle breeds them so i have been around them quite a bit.

thank you everyone for your suggestions it is very helpful and now i have a nice list to go to the shelter with

NO on the Husky.
They shed like crazy, yes. [Mine does, at least.]
My dog would never be able to protect our house, LOL. xD She'd just run up to them and give them a nice kiss.
Plus, they don't really like small spaces. At least, my dog doesn't.
She's a purebred Husky, and she's -insane-. xD
She loves our backyard, it's huge. [like seriously, huge.]
But we still need to walk her an hour every day to keep her not as ADHD as she normally is. xD

But, I would suggest a German Shepherd. ^_^
I really -love- GSDs, very sweet dogs, but also protective and territorial. ^_^ They're also pretty good with kids ! I used to have one, and he was the sweetest thing evarrr. :D

Dobermans are also great protection dogs. ^_^ [I love them, think they're beautifull. <3]
    bluehh.
  • yes i have pretty much rulled out huskies right now my top four are
rotties
dobie
great dane
GSD
  • Dobies and Rotties are known to be wary of strangers, so you might not be able to get it used to GOOD people coming to your door.
GSD's have the same record. If you move the wrong way around a wary gsd, you could get your hand bitten, if you are a stranger that is.
And Great danes have a puppy phase. They don't chew as bad as other breeds, but thier legs are to long for thier body at the younger ages, so they knock things down. ALOT.

Some cons for each breed. ^.^

  • For a protection dog, I believe any loyal dog would try to protect you in a bad situation... I actually hate people getting something like a doberman for protection. Try a doodle. (aussie, labra and golden, are good sizes) They are loyal, but even protect against play fights. Most family oriented dogs ever! Although not visually scary...
