Dog Showing

edited August 2009 in General Discussion
Okay well i was think about showing or doing agility if i got another dog... but i really don't know much about either. (i have had mutts and a lab that would stare at you if you thought about getting her to do anything) i not sure what breed i would get but there as been talk in my family about a golden or snow dog.... we would be getting two as puppies so the can grow up. (now i have about 1-5 years to think about this becuse the dog i have now better not go any where for some time) if you have any site that could help me on greatering(sp?) my knowlage(sp?) on these two subjects they are welcome....

Oh and for agility is there any limit to the age/breed the dog as to be to do agility.

 • Agility is pretty open. Any dog, any breed can do it. :) I don't know much about it, but AKC has a new program where mutts can compete in sporting events. They have to be spayed/neutered. Check out their website for info. UKC and AKC both have LP programs for non-registered purebreds for sporting events. Dogs much be spayed/neutered.

Sorry, I don't have much info. Check out United Kennel Club's website and American Kennel Club's website.
 • Lol, I wouldnt personally pick out a dog just for its sporting potential xD The only reason I run agility with my dog, is because hes smart and energetic and needs something to do. That and its really fun, but... a lot of people do it for themselves rather than the dog (it is easy to tell which dogs kinda just trot through the course like it doesnt matter to them xD)

Anyways, any breed can run agility. Ive seen Chihuahuas, Basset Hounds, Great Danes, All-American(Mutts)... anything you name it, it runs agility, pretty much. Ive even seen Cane Corsos and Mastiffs before.

AKC used to only allow purebreds, but, I have also heard of the new program for mutts. Ive never ran AKC before, because its competitive and you only get to run like. 2 runs per trial I think. Your dog of course has to have AKC papers and all as well if you want to run that, and has to be 2 years old. Unless this has changed over the past 2 years that Ive been running agility. I was told all this when I first started, so, if something has changed I could be wrong.

I could give you all the organizations I know of besides AKC if you wanted them xD There are several agility organizations, and they come in a variety of competitive levels. :P

 • Well, if you google Agility, or Agility events, you should be able to find anything you need =P Theres a lot of stuff to post links for, so, it'd be better if you did the research yourself.

Or, you could always talk to a dog trainer in your area that teaches agility, because most likely they also run their dogs in it  And that way, they can tell you most of the basics of trials in the area and whatnot.

 • My Brittany Spaniel is good at agility stuff. They just need the concept of "Come" really, supurbly down or if they see something, they'll run, run, run. Anyways, my Brittany has jumped over 4ft stuff before. If you need a video, I can probably take one. They're light weight and fast too. They're super easy to house break since they don't really like going in the house too. They may be prone to howling at first, but it's been a few months since I've had my dog, so she doesn't do that anymore(only when she has to go out). They're sweet dogs that like attention too(at least mine is). They're stubbron sometimes when they don't want to do something. When I was training my dog to walk on the leash, she would jump up on her hind legs and put her paws around the leash, so I couldn't walk her. She got over it soon after though because I continued to work with her. Brittanys are very smart too(Again, at least mine is) and learn the something that's bad to do is bad to do. Also, I suggest that you have a large back yard for them to run and that you exercise them everyday. My dog also drinks a lot of water compared to other dogs, so you may need to change the water for your dog every few hours if it drinks like mine does. My dog is super hyper always, and needs something like this so she's not bouncing off the walls. Hope this helped. :D
