Though it was freezing, the snow covered the ground like a sparkling white blanket. The trees were leafless and the flowers were not in bloom. It was almost as if everything had died, but underneath the ground or in a tree... you could find a living creature.

My name is Maxine [Max], I am a fourteen year old girl. I’m home schooled in Faribault, Minnesota. I am an only child and I live with just my mom. I am one of the youngest girls to compete in an obedience trial and take home 1st place.

My story begins the day my first dog was hit by a car...

It was the beginning of winter, the morning air was crisp and cool, and the roads were icy. As usual, there was dirt all over the road so the cars wouldn’t slip on them. To me, it just looked like someone got in a dirt fight and all the dirt ended up on the side of the road. My dog, Lexi, was a white German Shepherd. Though, her fur was more of a yellow-ish than white. And in the summer, it was always filled with dirt and sand. Lexi was trained in obedience, so she was an excellent listener. I always put a purple bandana around her neck in the winter, so I could see her when she was outside. But one crisp winter morning, she bolted out the door because she saw a cat in our yard. The cat fled from my yard and zipped across the street, Lexi took off after the stupid cat, not knowing there was a truck coming. The truck honked its horn loudly as it tried to slow down and Lexi stopped. I screamed in panic, "Lexi, come! Lexi, please come!" But it was too late. The truck was trying to stop, but soon as Lexi started to run, the truck struck her side. The force of the impact caused Lexi to go flying through the air. She ended up landing in a pile of snow about five feet away. I just stood there in shock, I knew I had heard a loud yelp from her when she was hit. As soon as I snapped out of my state of shock, I bolted over to her. "Lexi! Come on girl, you're okay," I said, forcing back the tears. I put my arms under her warm body and lifted her up. I walked as fast as I could back to the house.

I brought Lexi inside and told my mom, Sara, that Lexi had been hit. She helped me get Lexi into the car and we drove to the vet. My mom asked me how Lexi got hit, so I told her the story. The twenty minute drive to the vet's felt like an eternity. I was worried that we wouldn't make it in time, that this would be a waste of time. Lexi's breathing was shallow and she was shaking really hard. I tried to calm her down by stroking her head and talking to her softly. She looked at me with her huge eyes, and I knew she didn't have much time left. "Mom.. Hurry! She is getting worse by the minute!" I said frantically. "Honey, I'm going as fast as I can. Look, we're here," she said.

I opened the car door and jumped out, I scooped Lexi up and rushed into the vet's office. "Miss? Do you need some help?" asked the lady at the front desk. "YES! My dog has been hit by a car! She needs to see the vet NOW!" I said, shaking. "Okay, wait here," the lady said. She disappeared into the back and a few moments later, she came back with the vet. They took Lexi to the back on a cart. "Follow me, miss," said the nurse. I followed the nurse into a room with my mom. "Now sweetie, what is your name and your dog’s name?" she asked. "My name is Max and Lexi is my dog. Please! You have to save her! She is my life!" I said as tears began to stream down my face. "Calm down, hun, now tell me what happened," said the nurse. I told her what happened, and then the vet came in.

Her eyes were telling me everything. "Lexi is dead. Isn't she?" I asked, about to cry again. "No, Lexi is recovering... But she has some broken bones. And she suffered some brain damage. Would you like to see her before we make the decision?" The vet asked me. I was speechless, I finally managed to talk, "I... I would like to see her. But... how bad is she? Like.. how long does she have?" The vet let out a soft sigh, "We don't know for sure. If she remembers your face, she may have a while longer. Why don't you follow me." I followed the vet to Lexi. I walked up to her and said her name. She perked up and her tail started to slightly wag. "Hey, girl, 'member me?" I asked her, trying to act brave. She was too weak to hold her head up, and she was shaking. She looked at me, I could see in her eyes that she was in a lot of pain.

I began to cry, "I... I think she would feel better if she wasn't suffering..." The vet put her hand on my shoulder, "I think you’re making the right decision." The vet told me to keep my face in front of Lexi's and to try and keep her calm. As the vet gave Lexi the drug, her eyes slowly shut. As people have said, when you love something enough, you will let them go. Once her heart stopped, I couldn’t act brave anymore, and I began to cry. I kissed Lexi's soft forehead and took her purple bandanna off of her neck. She looked like she was sleeping.. but, I knew she wasn’t. I walked back to the room that my mom was in. I walked in and she came and held me in her arm. "It's okay, you were brave to make the right choice." My mom said. I didn’t feel very brave though. I felt like Lexi getting hit by a car was my fault - that I didn’t pay attention. I know everything that happens in life happens for a reason. But I couldn’t get myself to think that. Since Lexi was my first dog and my best friend, she was basically my life and my soul. And then… she was gone. And I would probably never find another dog like her. Gawd. What was I going to do. I couldn’t get over the fact that she was gone forever.

**It's rough, but this is the first story I have writen.** ~Krolak
