First off, I love rescue kennels. I have one. But one thing drives me nuts. There are currently 52,000 dogs sitting in rescue kennels. Only 2,000 of them are for sale. 50,000 just sitting there taking up space, slowing the search engines and not able to be adopted. Imagine the difference that might be made if these dogs were released/retired or even put up for sale so others could get use from them. I know that some of them are waiting for training but certainly not all 50,000. Most of these are badly statted, messed up training dogs that would be better off out of circulation. I was so thankful for the update that let us see suspended kennels and get their dogs. I was able to get about 900 out of one rescue kennel(others were also getting some, thank goodness). I released/retired all but 6. One of them I sold within 2 minutes for 2 million which more than covered(way, way more) what I spent aging the 6-12 month dogs for retirement. This kennel is not unique in having that many dogs. Several rescues here are mega kennels. I certainly understand that these are personal kennels and they have every right to do whatever they want with their kennels, but if you are a giant kennel, please consider at least putting them up for sale. I have a whole bunch of dogs in my rescue that are lined up to be retired/released. I'm just trying to figure out which ones are worth adopting out, and which need to go. There are about 600-900 that are most likely going.

Lots of the pups might be around 6 - 11 months old or whatever and can't be released OR retired. There's a point in a VP puppy's life that you can neither release nor retire. It's really quite annoying considering you don't want your own dogs to age as you're trying to age your rescued ones...

I know it's no excuse for not putting them up for adoption, but maybe they're all badly-statted & bred dogs and can't be bothered to be sold and should just be rid of...

I made a novice kennel for that purpose. I can send them there to age them until they can be retired.

I age them in the rescue by moving them to my main kennel. The ones I keep are boarded so they don't age. When I get about 100 of the 6-12 guys, I take about 8 turns, release the ones I can and then repeat till they're gone. The ones I'm glad I rarely see anymore are the 1 month olds that were entered in events before the rules changed. Even so, one good dog you can auction makes up for it.

i am one of the people who only keep whats worth keeping and release/retire the dogs which are basically pointless. i also rescued about 500 dogs from about 2 different kennels, and every one i rescued was removed from VP, there wasn't one worth keeping. i dont see the point in rescuing a 0x4 low statted chihuahua, putting it up for adoption only for someone else to do the same thing later on. if it's not worth it, not high statted, not trained, not someway useful to the game, then get rid!!

I don't understand the problem with low stated dogs. It just makes other dogs cost more.

I go by the stats the breed is at. A lot of breeds are ALL low statted. And overbred. Border Collies in particular need a lot of retiring/realeasing.

Hah. Along with... Huskies Goldens Labs Aussies G. Shepherds. :roll: The list goes on and on! I'm working on reducing the Golden Ret. population.

So far... I've made hardly a dent. o.o;

Popular breeds, I think. Everyday dogs that everyone loves... too many people bought them & wanted them, too many people bred their dogs (and are still doing it...) that's the way I look at it.

Found 2 more abandoned rescues and got rid of more dogs

51,000 sitting in rescues and 2500 for sale ... a little progress I'm glad there are other rescues out there that are also doing this and not just collecting dogs to sit there. Hopefully some more of those big rescue kennels will go through their kennels.

i usually neuter the low statted dogs, that way if a new player wants a dog just to get a feel for the game they can buy one at a cheap price. i'm also bad (or good) about releasing high statted dogs (in addition to the low statted ones) if there are a ton of the breed, like border collies, apbts etc. i think it's mostly just a matter of how you prefer to play the game. i think someone said the data isn't the problem, it's more of the clicking people do. i am horrible about rescuing dogs and leaving them in the rescue w/no options, but i actually board them all and if they aren't taken out then they'll one day become good eventers. that, and at least i know they won't be bred untrained etc.

Nutty, you are absolutely right. People should play however they want, it's their kennels, their money, their time. I can even see why people might not want to release or retire-they might be rping a no-kill shelter or something like that. Even then though it seems like they would put them up for others to adopt. I just started this topic because I never understood why people rescued and then didn't put them up for sale or get rid of them. I never knew there were so many dogs in that position until our new search button---it's been on my mind since that update. I guess I do kind of the same thing though-just not with my rescue dogs. I show 12 dogs but have 152 in boarding because they are the ones I plan to show 'someday'. I worked out one time that it would take me over 3 years of showing all my dogs in every event to even get part of the way through all of them. Yet, I'll see another and think 'Ohhhhh, that would be a nice dog to have" The list just keeps growing longer and longer.

I tell you why or atleast why I never release/retire. Laziness! xD I have so many dogs in my rescue its like eww rescuing is so much more fun then releasing/retiring. I try to get rid of about 50 a month when I go through them. xD

lol! usually when my rescue fills up with a ton of dogs, i just sell the entire kennel rather than have to go through all of them. and when i think of that, i don't really serve a purpose on vp. i used to lurk a lot because of my job, but the place i worked at is getting foreclosed on so now i don't even lurk. well, i am obssessed w/rescue dogs that have funny names. but i'm not even remotely on topic anymore so...
