Am I Overreacting?

edited April 2009 in Vent
So, my sister has two geckos. When she got them, we thought they were both females, but turns out she had a male and a female instead. So now they're fully grown and able to breed. My mom and dad don't do anything about it, don't seperate them, nothing, because "The eggs will probably not be incubated enough anyways. Besides, even if they were and the babies hatch, they'll probably just die anyways."

Am I right to think that's inhumane and cruel? That if they're just going to die and you're not going to take proper care to ensure that they survive at all costs that they're just better off not being born? Or am I just over reacting? Like I said they're not mine they're my sister's, I'm not the one who takes care of them, I don't know the first thing about geckos since even though I think they're gorgeous and I'm not scared of them or anything, I'm more of a rodent person anyways.

But back on track, if anyone has reptiles I'd like feedback. They would probably be born with birth defects and such anyways wouldn't they? So they'd be suffering most likely, and then they would die because we don't have the ability to properly incubate the eggs and stuff, so wouldn't that be cruel?

Anyways. It's just been bugging me and I had to get it out.

 • The female could start to get thin if the male keeps trying to get at her after she lays eggs if they are not seperated. The male could drive her nuts. Also make sure you have plenty of calcium in the tank for the female. She will need all she can lick up. Now for the eggs. They most likely will not hatch because the temp/moisture has to be perfect. Now it could happen but very unlikely. I have heard people will take eggs fertile or not to a pet store so another animal will eat the eggs. That way they do not go to waste.
Couple questions. xD
How long has she had them?
Are you postive they are female/male pair.

*Edit* =P
Are these Leopard Geckos we are talking about? I just assumed they are since most people get these.

 • we'll i wouldn't know to much about reptiles. although i do have two desert tort. :D and.. there still hybernating. haha.

but, i can see your point. i know this is kinda ..off but i had a male and female hampster who mated.. had twelve babies. out of no where. so we immeditatly sepeated the male and female

and then the mom started eating her babies!!! So i read up on it and it ment she was stressed or felt in danger.. so we moved her and she ate a couple more, we took the babies and.. was probably worse. We went to a local pet store asked them what to do. They gave us some baby formula for them and a lil saraenge thing, but all 9 ended up dying. I guess you whee supposed to stimulate them with a warm wash cloth for them to go to the bathroom if not they bloat up and die..

that advice could have helped sooner if you know what i mean..

so i just wanted to let you know i can relate to your concern for the offsprings. and if it where me.. I would probably seperate them or look more into gecko's. breeding habbits and all that ^.^

good luck!

 • When I bought my collard lizard it was already pregnant. >.>

I got her from petsmart and they didn't even tell me she was prego.
I had did a lot of research when I first got her,
but I was not prepared for eggs.

I took her to our local reptile store and ask what I should do,
the guy there gave me some moss stuff,
-which is weird because she's a dessert lizard-
and told me to keep the moss moist, I did as he told me too.

A week later, they where all dead...
didn't even hatch.

He gave me the wrong incubating product.

So, if you want information I suggest talking to a professional (such as a breeder ).
Or looking through books.
Internet isn't as relable nowadays.
