Hamster help?

I have had three hamsters before this one, but never had this problem. So...my hamster is an escape artist. I have a cat, and I dont want her to eat him. Well, she hasnt tried to yet, but it could happen. So this is like the fifth time hes gotten out. The first time I found him, put him back in and thought ''Oh well, I must not have closed the cage all the way.'' He got out again, we bought a new cage thinking the old one wasnt working right anymore (Since its the same one I've had since I got my first hamster) He got out again, I got him, put him back thinking ''Oh I must not have closed the cage again.'' And then like an hour later he was out again. I put him back in, knowing I had checked the cage last time, and tied the door shut with a breadtie thingy. Well, somehow he got that off and got out again. This morning. At 4 freaking a.m. My mom is scared to death of rodents. She wakes up to my insane cat trying to get my hamster out from under my bed. A few minutes later she wakes me up and I find him under there and chase him into some stuffed animals, getting him up, putting him back in and going back to sleep. Let me tell you, I do not enjoy being under my bed chasing a psycho hamster at 4 am on a school day/night. So now Ive got the door tied shut with 4 of those breadtie thingys. Anyone got a better solution?

Once a hamster gets out the first time, once it's had that taste of freedom, it will NEVER be happy in its cage again. It'll always want to get out again, and it'll keep trying. There's nothing you can do. My suggestion is to take him/her to the pet store/breeder/wherever you got it and see if they'll exchange it for a new one.

I cant get rid of him. I love him too much. =\ Besides I got him from Petsmart and you can only return them in like the first 14 days or somethin like that. I';ve had him for like a year maybe?

Lol I know how you feel

If I ever had to give up my Jasper I doubt I could do it. If you can keep the door shut somehow that'd be awesome. You could try getting like a tank and then wiring the top on or something.

So far the 4 ties are working. By the time he gets one off hes to tired to deal with the rest and I just put that one back on xD

Mine used to do that. I've had probably 20 or so hamsters and gerbils over the years and almost all of them were escapers. I kept mine in an aquarium with a mesh top, though, so I just kept a heavy book on the lid to keep it in place.

What kind of cage is he living in? Sounds like my rabbit Dolla. She always is trying to get out. xD

We just bought him a CritterTrail X. I may try that Wheaty, if I can find one in the right size.

maybe hes bored... i dunno what the cage youve got is like XD.. maybe you could put toys in and stuff.. or items under you bed XD maybe a sock

or buy a old cuddley toy it could chew or something (i dont know about rodents.. it maybe bad for them). you could try putting toilet rolls tubes in.. (you may of done that) another option if to buy a biggish run which you can put him in during the day, then shut the door on the cat. you could place items in it so he can hide and stuffss... or you could buy another hamster to keep him company.. you may get two hamsters on the loose.. or they can keep each other company and not escape

Aquariums might work best, put a towel or something over it when your not around, that might keep him calm.

What type of hamster do you have? some breeds escape more then other just cuse it's in there blood and in that case it might not have enough room so you might need a bigger cage. becuse like dwaf hamster need a bigger cage then syrins becuse they like to run.

Yeah, thats the cage I have. Hes not getting out of the top, hes getting out of the front door thingy. I kinda broke his ball and havent gotten a new one yet. And Hes a long hair. I can show you a picture if you like.

Maybe consider building a new cage? A popular "cage" for hamsters among hamster savvy people are Bin Cages. They are cheap and fairly easy to make.
