An animals Inteligence is not messured by how you train it.

I've noticed that people think that animals can prove how smart they are by teaching them tricks. It's been proven that, this is not true.

About 3 years ago for my birthday, I wanted a Puppy, but we lived in an apartment. So, I asked for a kitten instead. I was equally happy when I got to pick out a kitten from a breeder. I brought home an adoreable baby boy kitten and I loved him. But, I wanted to teach him something. Like a dog. We bought treats and everytime my cat would sit on command I would give him a treat. And eventually, he got that if he sat when I told him to, he would be rewarded. So now he can sit on command like a dog.

Now he has learned many more things, like sit, stay, liedown, and his most impressive trick is how he can balaence a treat on his nose untill I tell him he can have it then he'll toss it up in the air and catch it in his mouth (Most of the time) .

Most people would think that dogs are the most inteligent pet there is to had. That's not true, they are lovely creatures but other animals can be trained too. Dogs are just the easiest to train. Cats have more of a " What!?! You want ME to do what YOU tell me to?? When did this start!?!" attitude. Some Birds can even be trained to do funny tricks. Hey, even goldfish can memorize opstical corses. :D I just think it's funny that an easy to train animal was deemed the most intelegent. I think people need to broden their herizons when training animals.

We've all seen Fido catch a frizbee, but have you ever seen a goldfish Roll-over? xD

  • I have had my cat simba for 4 years, and i have learned that he is more intellegent than my dog is. Cats are more independent than dogs, my cat has more privlages than my dog because he is cleaner, (as they clean themselves) he crawls into bed and lays on me wanting me to scoot over so he can lay down to, funny thing is he sleeps like a human, with his head on the pillow and he lays on his back. Also, if he meows enough to annoy the heck out of everyone he knows that he can get more food in his bowl. ;D

  • I know exactly what you mean! People underestimate my kitty all the time.
But that's until he does his tricks.
I've gotten my cat to sit, come, lie down, come up on your legs to be petted,
if you say "up" he'll reach up and grab your hand. His best trick though is
when he gives high fives to you.

My dog only knows down, sit, stay, come and how to fetch.

Go trained kitties!!
  • For some reason most of my cats and both my dogs are .. stupid ..
1 of my cats is quite smart.. if she wants something, she'll sit, hi-5, roll over, speak, tennis (tries to get it out of my hand) but shes 4 :D, my friends cat on the other is 5months and she can already sit lie down and roll over :D

  • I agree with you, but... I dont think theres a real way to tell which animal is the smartest xD Dogs or cats or rats could be the smartest... I think its more of a personal measure though ^^

I saw a video of someone who had taught their rabbit an agility course :D I was pretty impressed.
All good things must come to an end. All endings will begin new good things.

  • I think I must own ALL the duds.

NONE of my animals do "tricks". My dogs will sit/lie etc, but only if there's nothing more interesting to do lol. (Yeah my dogs aren't particularly well trained)

My cats? Well if sleeping all day is a trick then they're experts.

And the ferrets? Well! Less said the better.
I've had them almost 4 years now and they STILL miss the litter tray lol. Luckily they live outside so they don't stink the house out.

So yeah, my animals are all duds. Maybe I should send them back and demand replacements, you know, models that actually work?

(BTW JOKE! I love my animals to pieces)

Lmao!
My dad thinks my dog is dumb, just because when we leave she gets mad(she has seperation anxeity) and she knocks the trash over and drags it through out the house because she knows it makes us mad.

I find it quite smart and annoying. >.>

  • :]
We used to have a neighbor that had this one cat...
She was a gray w. slightly... i dunno... white? markings across her face.
This neighbor was retired, worked on cars. I never once saw him teach that cat anything. But one day we were talking and I was showing him my new Lab puppy and how she could roll over!
Next thing I know he's like, "my cat can high five." and i'm like... cats dont do tricks!
And then, he holds his hand about waist height and goes "Serena, High-five!" and the damn cat jumps up, hit her head against his palm, drops down and just stares up at him like she didnt do anything amazing.

I was like... damn... o_o

Also, my two dogs that I have now are incredibly intelligent. Just in different ways. My GSD can learn tricks in no time. The GP, however, is more cunning. He can sneak out of the house... hide... steal food... etc. Its bad behavior I know, but... he sometimes gets away with it for hours. Until we noticed that part of the cake is missing... >.> Yar.

Kudos to train kitties though. I'm impressed :]
