• I agree.
As-with any dog... Proper Socialization/Training and Handling is the best. Doesnt matter the breed. A friend of mine has a 6 mo. old Lab/Golden Retriever who isnt properly socialized, and banned to a crate for at-least 20 hrs. a day, and is pretty viscous and out of control.
So it's people... DEFINATLY NOT the breed. Thanks for posting :D

We had an Am. Pitbull Terrier who was great with my 3 children (all under 2 yrs.) and NEVER had a problem with him. He loves to let them "steal" his food, and we take him into pet stores and he does fine with everything/everyone and even dogs. So it's ignorant people that are going off of what uneducated people are saying... DONT LIKE IT.

  • I am really glad you posted this, because with proper training, control, socialization..etc, these dogs can be angels.

APBT are one of my favorite dogs, one of my top 5 i believe. I also like dog breeds that are related to the APBT.

There's a dog like these that lives by me. It's loose once in awhile, and it seems pretty aggressive.

It attacked one of the dogs that was on a chain also living by me and the dog could have died, but it was a Siberian Husky, and all of the bushy fur was hard for it to get a hold of. If the dog didn't have a lot of fur, it would've been killed.

But point is, the dog didn't have proper training and was cooped in the house all day.
It doesn't have proper socialization with any dog other then the small non-stop barking dog living next to it that the APBT wants to kill all the time.

Um, so yah.
I'm going to stop..

because this is kind of hard to talk about.
When you care about them so much.
:D
  • Long live Pit Bulls!
Punish the deed, not the breed.
The problem is with the owners, not the dogs.
All who object, go post it somewhere else.
This thread is for those who love the breed :D
  • Pitties <3

They shouldn't be banned. I think that the people who buy them, though, need to have a background check done.

  • agrees with everyone. always good to see open-minded people. breed specific laws are like taking 50 steps backward. why not just reinstate restrooms and bus seats for different races if that's the mindset people have? same concept.

on a lighter note, i mainly wanted an excuse to post some pics of my dogs lol.

**whoa, a dog banned to a crate for most of it's day?? that's horrible, they should give it to someone w/a backyard, or someone that can spend time with it to resolve whatever problems the puppy is having

  • I do agree with everyone, they are nice dogs and all...but...there's always going to be dumb people who just want a mean dog, and those people are everywhere, and sometime or another that dog is gonna get loose and attack someone, it is totally not the dogs fault, but there are going to be people who buy the dogs just to have something "cool" and "mean."

I used to be totally for pitbulls, but very recently there were two that were very close to attacking me, just for absolutely no reason.
It was the owners fault they were like this, I feel sorry for the the dogs, but I really don't want that happening again, I love dogs, I don't want to be too scared just to walk around my own neighborhood because of dogs.

Until all people can be responsible with pitbulls, and give them the right training and socializing, I kinda agree with them being banned from places. There's always and forever going to be stupid people who will breed aggressive and improperly trained pitbulls.

I'm not trying to start a fight, it's just this discussion seemed biased and I wanted people to know the other half of the story.
  • **whoa, a dog banned to a crate for most of it's day?? that's horrible, they should give it to someone w/a backyard, or someone that can spend time with it to resolve whatever problems the puppy is having

They wont allow myself to work with it. And we've also told them that we'd take him off their hands to find it a good home. Before giving up my Great Dane/Lab female we interviewed literally 15 different home before settling down with one that was much like our own.
There's so much potential in that little pup, and he's still young, so all's not lost. It's just they think that they're "good" for the pup, but it's really neglect, and we've told them that. They're just ignorant. And this pup is going to be horrible. I dont let him around my kids, and dont like him by myself, due to the way he acts.
But that really does prove a point, as he's two of the most popular family-oriented dogs in the U.S. And is extremely aggressive, horribly hand-shy to the point where he crouches low to the ground if called, and pees constantly due to the fact.
So it's the way the dog is handled, controlled, trained, etc. Because our Am. Pitty is SO great with my children, we've had house-rabbits that ran around the house and he never shown any aggression toward them, we've got 3 cats, still nothing. And when we take him out for walks he doesnt show aggression towards people/other dogs.

So it's definatly people.

  • It's such a shame. In England this breed is completely banned. Any dog that even resembles a Pit has to be destroyed, even if it's the gentlest dog on the planet. Pits have got a bad reputaion unfortunatly, because of those people (already mentioned) that just want a "hard" dog. It's just a status symbol to them. I personally love Pits, I'm sure that there is the odd dog that is actually nasty for no reason. (Sorry people it isn't ALWAYS just about bad ownership). But you can get that with any dog. I personally feel that Yorkshire Terriers are more vicious than most Pits I've met.

  • lol i always joke that the bigger the dog, the more laid back it is.! i've honestly never met a cocker spaniel that wasn't aggresive. (i've only met about 6 lol).

i do think it's always the humans fault. all dogs were bred by humans for specific reasons, whatever those reasons may be.
i absolutely think any dog that is aggresive should be dealt with accordingly, and i also think breed specific legislation is no different than middle easterners being targeted and discriminated against after 9/11.

i've been seriously bitten by a german sheperd on the arm, and by both of my friend's corgi/lab mixes. have scars too, but i don't think any of the breeds should be banned. the german sheperd wasn't on a leash or confined, and the corgi/labs... very protective of their owner, who was my best friend at the time. all i did was walk into her room talking about something excitedly, and they jumped on me.

i respect everyone's opinions though.

  • I dont believe Pit Bulls should be banned anywhere.
It would be like saying "No Japanese People in Denver" ect.
Any dog can bite. Whether its a Golden Retriever or a Pit Bull, when mistreated, any dog can prove to be a threat.
    name is britti elizabeth :D
  • Yeah like, some pit bulls are nicer than my great dane.
pits are "apparently" ferocious and great danes are "apparently" nice;
but not in this case... and why? because every dog is different,
they all have differences in character. a huge majority of pit bulls
that i know are submissive to their owners and sometimes other dogs,
my dane on the other hand, is dominant even towards me (i pretty much
own her; do everything with her), and extremely dominant with other
dogs. she doesn't bite---but WOULD bite a child. that's why we must keep
her away from children that are under 11 years old. pit bulls?
people with children and toddlers have pits.
i would NEVER have a child if i still owned keilah. i would wait until it was
her time.
stereotypes never work out.

  • Sorry people it isn't ALWAYS just about bad ownership
I agree. A very experienced dog trainer and owner that I know of, who has bred over 150 German Shepherd litters in his lifetime, said that also. Occasionally he has seen female dogs with absolutely no maternal instinct, along with aggression towards her offspring--which once resulted in a death of a puppy because she killed it. No mother dog should be like this. They put her down. It wasn't genetics, ownership or anything, she had a screwed up brain. And like the quote, some dogs are just naturally nasty. Like.. my Dane X for example. Everyone expects Great Danes to be gentle and laid back, and Labs to be easygoing and playful. Well, no. Keilah is a dominant, determined, courageous, and self-confident FEMALE who will fight to the death (and probably win) against another dominant dog, especially alpha males. It's messed up. Dominant dogs are usually the least bright I find, and the hardest to control, and the REASON behind most maulings and attacks.
