Twilight Toxin WIP Thread

I'm using the same reference and the same sketch as the basis for each, so I figured I'd keep them to one topic. I'm mainly a horse artist, I don't draw much in the canine department, but I may later. Some Background information: A loooong time ago Exco from VHR won a lineart from me in an auction and I colored it for her. Fast forward to maybe a year+ later and she lost the link. I see it, am appauled, and offer to make her a new piece for a discount. This piece took quite some time, and I honestly began to hate it. So, I was drawing Exco's picture and decided I hated it and didn't want to continue. So I used the same ref and just practiced been loose and quick like my art teacher wanted. And then I decided I liked that version much better and wanted to replace Exco's drawing with that. Only I ended up adding some props and now I haven't the heart to take them away. xD Exco's would be different. The plan is that I would ink this and give Prancer the Robin version, and for Exco's version I would replace the head with the old version's head, mane, and tail, and may also change the build a bit. And each of them would get it colored by me.

And now, the Robin Hood for Prancer. <img src="http://i26.tinypic.com/2wmq8wk.jpg"; alt="http://i26.tinypic.com/2wmq8wk.jpg"; class="bb-image" /> I'm thinking about lengthening the back a tad, but I may just leave it that way... I'm fixing the nostrils on this one though.

Since this does pop up as a question every so often. I haven't taken screenshots because it's too time consuming for me and I end up focusing on screenshots instead of the piece. I did try a screen recorder, but it lagged my PC making the lineart way too jagged, so I nixed that. You'll just have to live with text and an alternative tutorial.

How I lineart(in PS) <a href="http://rheall.deviantart.com/art/How-To-Digitally-Ink-51092027"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://rheall.deviantart.com/art/How-To ... k-51092027</a> ^This tutorial sums it up pretty much, but I'll add some additional thoughts (which may or may not be covered already, it's been a while since I've looked at the tutorial). When linearting I: -Prefer to watch movies without commercials (half hour shows and commercials interupt the mood). If not that, I listen to music (it also interupts the mood, but not in a turn off sort of way for me). -Zoom in anywhere from 200%-400% -Have my canvas at least 1500x1500 pixels (having them larger and then shrinking to around 700x700 makes things appear much smoother than they did at working size). -Constantly skip around. I find myself working on the head and becoming frustrated, so instead of putting the whole piece away I skip down to the legs or hooves, anything different. -When certain areas are just too hard to ink (the back and stomach come to mind), I prefer to flip my canvas horizontal and/or verticle for a different look. Again, it beats putting it away for me and I find the change refreshing. -At my larger sizes I prefer a size 3 pixel brush, no extra settings for general linearting. Sometimes I'll switch to a 5 for shadows. -For detailing I will sometimes switch to a size 2, but generally I will stay at a size 3 and click the airbrush option with a flow of 60% or less. -Constantly zoom out and make my sketch layer invisible. In areas where a large portion of lineart has been completed I consider whether or not the outline is worth keeping (and I try to imagine what improvement could be done with details). If I don't think it can be helped, I erase the whole thing (sometimes I will delete the whole ink layer) -Find it easier to make a new layer when adding darker lines to the lineart to represent shadows. If I don't like the results, I can erase them without ruining the nicer parts of the lineart. -Constantly adjust the opacity on the sketch layer. It really depends on what I am trying to achieve. Normally it stays at 50-70% though when I start detailing I like it around 30-40%. -There is the RARE occasion where I will use a soft brush. Generally I don't like to use them for inking, but if it works, it works. That's all I can remember, hope it gives you ideas! =D

Thanks! Study/for fun As a note, no I will NOT be getting rid of the lineart. Right now the neck is almost done, while the head will be getting touched up soon. After that I have to clean up the rest of the red, seeing as part of it are still outside the line.

LOL, no I am not finishing that one, sorry. There were too many errors with it, and I had only done that one as an experiment with contrast. I am working on a new radioactive one though.

Oh, well, I am lazy, so days, weeks, months. But if you were to put them into hours, going from sketch to lineart is about 5-9 hours of work (sketching, redlining, erasing, improving, redoing, painstaking amount of time spent inking, erasing the inked parts and redoing them, finished piece, editted again, etc) and then realism really does take days. xD Normal coloring would just add another 1-3 hours to that.

Okay, no critiquing for those two pieces above. My PC crashed and I lost the files. I never got to finish the Robin Hood version, and now I can't change the radioactive version. New Project on my replacement laptop! It's for a VHR contest drawing someone's IRL horse. I studied the photo refs of the horse and the next day made a caricature of my impression of him! <img src="http://i38.tinypic.com/2qkj7o3.jpg"; alt="http://i38.tinypic.com/2qkj7o3.jpg"; class="bb-image" /> Not terrible considering I hadn't used a tablet in foreeevver, let alone drawn in general. I studied my main reference and started drawing the skeleton <img src="http://i36.tinypic.com/2hmkp5l.jpg"; alt="http://i36.tinypic.com/2hmkp5l.jpg"; class="bb-image" /> Starting to flesh him out. <img src="http://i34.tinypic.com/ayam3a.jpg"; alt="http://i34.tinypic.com/ayam3a.jpg"; class="bb-image" /> Redline I did for someone in ten or so minutes. <img src="http://i34.tinypic.com/fns0v7.jpg"; alt="http://i34.tinypic.com/fns0v7.jpg"; class="bb-image" /> I faced a dilemma. My drawing was pretty spot on to the ref, and when that happens (even with WIPs) sometimes people accuse you of tracing or doing a paint over. Ana told me to make two versions and see which one I like best. You had a special way of making your dogs look extra creepy. xD I'm not trying to insult you or anything, you said they're old, and I'm sure you've gotten better at drawing dogs x3. You're horses and coloring are beautiful, I've never seen coloring so realistic. Is the coloring from your imagination or do you use a ref for that kind of detail?

The the running TBs I had to use a reference until I got the hang of making green and brown look realistic. As for the dogs, I can't say creepy was what I was going for with the first two, but the last one creepy would be acceptable.
