Other types of hunting...

edited November 2004 in Game Suggestions
So far on vp there is only one type of hunting and that invovles retrieving. For many breeds this is fine but there are other dog breeds here on vp and retrieving is not part of their job they were originally bred to do.Take coonhounds for example. They trail raccoons and tree them. They bay after treeing the raccoon and wait until the owner arrives to shoot the coon down. They do not retrieve. In real life coonhound competitions the dogs are judged on how they track, trail, tree and such. When a coonhound is on the trail of a coon they bay. This helps the owner follow their hounds.Their tone changes once they've treed a coon too. This lets the owner know that they have treed a coon.

Just a suggestion but maybe when Nef has time in the future she could consider having a more varied range of competitions.

  • Yeah, but we'd have ot use fake animals, and i can't figure out how a fae thing could climb a tree (i litterly tried, didn't work out). I don't think Nef wants to use guns, so if there was a fake animal...

Thank you Lothe (sorry if i spelled that wrong) for the wonderful banner
  • Maybe they could use a raccoon scented toy and then plant it in a tree for the dogs to find.

  • yeah, that would work. And maybe even rabbit-scented toys for pointing? So there would could be pointing. Never thought about scented toys. For the coon one, the 1st one to find it could win. for pointing, whatever dog points to it 1st? And theres terriers the chase rabbits/foxes/bleh/blah/something put of there dens.Maybe the 1st dog to get in, and basiclly throw the toy out of the hole? Just thoughts

  • I'm all about having more types of competitions. :) Makes for more fun and lets some of the specialized breeds shine in their own right.

I still suggest we should split cattle and sheep herding so you can have your strong and agressive herding breeds(cattle) and your fast and intelligent herding breeds(sheep) have a chance to do well.

It'd be nice to have racing split into track and cross country racing since cross country racing is getting so popular.

I was thinking too, isn't flyball split into height? That might be nice. That way you don't have Parson(Jack) Russell Terriers competing against like greyhounds and etc.

It'd be nice if some of the group errors go sorted out too speaking of events. Like Mastiffs should be working, Italian Greyhounds should be toy, and Affenpinschers should be toy. There's a few others. Isn't Wolf Hybrid not under lupus? Yeah they are 'lupis', instead of lupus.

Just a thought, it'd be nice if 'mutt' or 'mixed breed' could be a catagory. That way mutts could have competitions all their own. I know a lot of people are into 'rescueing' mutts so that'd give those guys a chnace to have their place in the spotlight.
  • Not sure if it's been mentioned in other threads, but I think we should definitely have earth dog trials. See AKC.org for details if you've never heard of them. It'd be a good event for smaller terriers and dachshunds.
