No, the males are the pretty ones. (I used to have bettas) Males are more colorful (to attract the girls xD) and they have long flowy tails. Females are darker (I think?) and have shorter tails and fins.

I'm pretty sure yours is a male
Alright! I thought so... Just wanted to clear that up... XD
It's a weird male though...
Thank you all for your insight. ;P
He could still be fairly young since his tail isn't that long. The males you usually see in stores with really full fins are ones that already past prime breeding age :P
Makes sense.
I could have sworn he was a pale pink and purple when I first got him too... but now he looks... a solid blue. XD

You all are sure betta's don't go through gender changes like parrot fish? ;P
(Yes..this is sarcasm! XD)
The paleness was most likely also stress. Bettas tend to pale out rather bad when they are either in bad or dirty water. That and in the stores all of the people picking them up and swishing them about tend to be bad on them. So I'm guessing those are the main reason he was first pale when you saw got him from the store. ^^

Mine always seemed to get really bright and colorful after I got them home and settled for a few days. I can only imagine what the poor things have to go through on a store shelf. >.<
Wow...I learned a lot today...
This was the first time I'd ever had anything like this happen before so I assumed it was some kinda gender-confused fish. XD
Thanks again! XD Now I can change his name to Patrick. ;P
My poor animals...I'm always getting their genders wrong... (aka Pinkey... XD)
Definitely a male I used to collect bettas. I had about 8 or 9 males and 1 female at a time a year or two. Now though, there's 3 left. Two are my mom's. This is my beautiful boy:

His name is Sea ^^ He's quite the moody little thing, but I luff him ^^ I've had him for 2 years.

I might go Betta shopping soon.
I love his colors!

Bettas are my love and eye-candy! xD

I plan to get a female or two as soon as I get some cash.
Not for breeding (don't have the time or money for that) just because. I have this weak spot for females. xD

Is it natural for bettas to make nosies with their mouths in their bowls? My sister's fish does it in the middle of the night while I'm watching TV and he's the only betta that I've ever heard do it. It's like he's clicking on the glass of the bowl or something...

Swordtail fish will change genders.
If there's not enough males then a female will change to a male >_>

I had one that gave birth and a week later began to turn into a male. You could tell by its fine, but it died during this
