I got bit...

edited February 2008 in General Discussion
I was at my friend's house last night...

She has a German Shepherd x Husky mix. Well he has a history of biting people. He attacks the cable guy often as well as my friend's dad and brothers, and he kills cats and turtles when he gets ahold of them. Well last night I was playing with him with his stuffed squeakie bone...I touched his leg and he friggin bit me. It didn't break the skin but my wrist was red and swollen for a few hours. And it wasn't a play-bite either cause he snarled while he did it.

I don't really know what to do. I told my friend and she told everyone else that lives there and they all just shrugged and thought nothing of it. Mom and dad say he should be put to sleep.
Bye.

  • Well, I don't think that euthanizing him is really necessary. But then again, if there were a world war between dogs and humans I'd be on the dog's side. LOL just kidding. But I am a sucker for dogs so don't listen to me :)

  • Eh.. I dunno. How long've they had him/this been going on? Auzzy...
    2mhssbd.png
  • BlueRose - I know what you mean. But this dog attacks people for no reason a lot. I don't feel safe when I go over there. Especially not now. But I don't know. He's also sickly skinny, so it might be best, so he'd stop suffering. They say he's skinny cause he runs. But...you can see his hips and ribs through his thick husky fur.

Dreamy - Years...
    Bye.
  • can you see his hip points?
    2cmsrnr.gif
  • Well with breeders like myself any time theres a dog that continuously
shows aggression, we put them to sleep. Luckily that has never happened
to us cuz frankly i find it cruel, even though it is the best thing to do.
With an aggressive dog, it would be even worse to get rid of it because
then whoever adopts it will just have the same problems, maybe even
worse. Sometimes it can even be a brain problem which also sometimes
leads to loss of weight since the brain can't function right.
This could just as well be a health problem that the dog has.

I would say the best choice would be to put him down. But idk...
  • Brandi - Yes, but he's gaining weight now after -years-...

Moonlight - I know what you mean.
    Bye.
  • I would put him down if it was my dog. If the dog is all skinny like that something is probably wrong with it..There's no reason for a dog to bite a human, unless it is self defense or the owner tells it to, lol. They shouldn't tolerate the dog biting. What if it was a little kid? The dog could kill it.

You should report it to the humane society and they will decide whether or not the dog is "vicious" or a "threat" to people. When my aunt's dog bit someone it stayed at the humane society in quarantine for like 5 days until they decided it was safe to be in public.

Sorry you got bit, hope your wrist is feeling better. It's so scary to get bit by a dog.. did it give any warning before it bit? There's a certain look dogs will give when they're in a pissy mood and you just know to back off. :P They'll cut their eyes at you, lower their head, etc.. Did the dog growl first?

... yeah. I'm rambling on, sorry. I would stay away from the dog until they do something with it.
    6on02p.jpg20svx47.png
  • Yeah, for the cable guy I guess Badger thought he was trespassing or something. But all I did was touch his leg, and no, he didn't growl or anything first.

I want to report him, but my friend might get mad at me (I know that's not as important), and dad also said they should've by now and since he's their dog its their job to do something about his aggression. He killed their turtle and has also killed a couple cats and raccoons and stuff that go into their yard. He's also loose when he's outside, so he could run off and attack stuff...

I'll try to get a picture of him. I have one somewhere.
    Bye.
  • Wow, they don't sound like very good owners. No offense. If they let their dog run around when it has a history of biting.. no too smart.

Does the dog bite the owners?

Most dogs don't growl these days before they bite. The owner's punish them for growling. Growling is a warning, dogs are supposed to growl before they bite.. but when someone punishes them for growling the dog thinks it's supposed to go straight to biting without warning.
    6on02p.jpg20svx47.png
  • I think they are too, considering Badger's mom got hit by a car cause they let her loose. They continued to let Badger loose after that, and with his history of aggression.

Yes, he sometimes will bite my friend's dad, who loves Badger the most.

<img src="http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/6231/692019ix8.jpg"; alt="http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/6231/692019ix8.jpg"; class="bb-image" />
    Bye.
  • Aw, he's a cutie...

But you should definently tell someone... if he's been biting people for that long he should get some treatment or something.
    2dbtohy.png
  • He's a beautiful dog, I'll give him that.

I told my parents..they're not happy. They might do something if they're mad enough. But they told me not to do anything cause his owners should know that if he's been biting people that he should get something done.
    Bye.
  • and the owners dont mind the dog biting others?

i dont think its right if a dog is a danger like that for biting for no giving reason other then you toching his leg he needs some major anger training or to be wearing a muzzle when ever their are people not form the family are about

im not on for the killing of aggressive dogs but if they cant do that then it will have to

i hope your ok now, but if that was a little kid maybe going to pet the dog and it attack the dog would be for sure killed
  • No, apparently they don't. I agree, he should at least have a muzzle or something.

I'm okay, it would've broken the skin except I was wearing a thick hoodie, so he bit through the sleeve. Cause of the sleeve, I only got red and swollen.
    Bye.
  • Well I don't think he deserves to get put to sleep, but you could do these
things to not be as scared when going over.
-Tell your friend you will only go over if the dog is put in another room
or outside. And make sure your parents also call their parents and make
sure they are positive he will be put away when you are over.
-Dogs are sometimes territorial over their backyard because its their
territory. So thats why he probbably kills anything that comes in their
yard.
-He might have some kind of unknown disease or something, you might
want to tell your friend to take him to the vet for a checkup.
-Make sure he has had his rabies vaccine.
-GET A MUZZLE.
xD
I will think of more later :3
But I have been bitten by a dog as well before and it hurt -_-

  • 1) There's no room he could be put in, there's 7 people living in their house and its a small trailer. There's no unoccupied rooms and the rooms that have doors are small, it wouldn't work @_@; When he's outside he runs off and into the road and stuff, I'd feel horrible if he got hit because of me being at their house.
2) He'll also run off and come back with dead cats in his mouth. So its not just in their yard @_@;
3) That's a possibility, also cause of how skinny he is and he always has food out...but they said they don't have money to go to the vet...
4) I'll ask next time I see my friend, thanks.
    Bye.

Just stay away from it.
Your parents cannot take them to court if there are no medical bills to tend to. I'm not implying that they were going to do this, however most people do and your parents fit in that category.
Some dogs are just aggressive despite their happy upbringing.

I would bet you quite a decent sum of money that I could bet what the problem is... =P lol
When you said what I bolded in the quote above, that gave me the insight.

You said he's a German Shepherd/Husky mix, right?
Well, those there are both two very powerful working breeds.
Both of those breeds are wired with very strong instincts to do what they were bred for. Now imagine combining the two! That's what you have here.
German Shepherds, as we all know, were first bred to guard [herds of sheep, yes, but nonetheless, that guarding instinct stays with them].
And Huskies? They were bred to sufficiently cover vast areas of land and endure long travels.

Both of those breeds need rigid structure, proper handling, & appropriate discipline in order to keep their balance in check.
[Now, discipline, as I said, does not mean yelling, hitting, or physically harming the dog in anyway]

Huskies, based on instinct, want to explore... they want to run... they want to travel.
It's sad to hear that this dog is being caged up in such a small home [as I'm assuming from your description].

As you could probably guess, I refer to Cesar Millan's philosophies a lot when I give advice on dog behavior & such.
I'd recommend that your friends read one of his books & understand that with a dog such as theirs [considering his large-size, working-breed background, etc], he needs a structure built to suit his needs... not theirs. It sounds like they simply just want him to assume the role as "harmless family pet" on automatic.
...but, unfortunately, it just doesn't work like that. =| ...he's not going to!
Nothing wrong with that! He's a dog!

Now a Pekingese perhaps? Automatically assume the role of "all-obeying pet?" Yes.
...but a mix such as this? No. =)

It sounds to me like this dog is just BEGGING for a good exercise routine. He NEEDS to burn energy.
A big dog like that, caged up? Of course going to become unnecessarily aggressive!! He's got all that pent up energy!
I feel bad for him, actually. He could possibly be a nervous wreck on the inside, so anxious & tense all the time, that of course he can't put on weight!

I feel that putting him down would be an absolute, total unnecessity as this point.
Has anybody even tried to fulfill his needs & give him a strong pack leader to look up to?
He sounds like a perfectly normal dog to me.
I'm willing to bet that almost any dog would act this way when put under the same circumstances.

Then again though, even after all that said, I'm no expert. ^^
I am not there in person to asses the situation entirely, neither.
But that is my opinion. =)

& I am more than 75% positive that this dog is not a total loss of control.
Don't mind me asking, but do you know of any effort that has actually been put forth, as of yet? I'd look into it.
This case is amusing to me for some reason >_> lol

As Cesar Millan would say; be sure to provide proper exercise, discipline, THEN affection... in that order!! =P lol

or of course all of what I just said could be wrong & I just wasted a whole bunch of time lecturing for nothing! =D lmao

  • You're right.

And as far as discapline goes...he has 0. When he bit me my friend yelled his name once, then hugged him squealing cause he burped and she thought it was cute. They baby him whether he's bad or good.

They don't let him outside much cause he runs off, so yeah, he gets very limited excersize. They only let him out long enough for him to go to the bathroom a couple times a day. Its a very small trailer. All he can do literally is lay down in the living room and walk around the kitchen, both of which are small.

Poor thing x.x
    Bye.
  • Yeah, I feel bad for him. =(
Cut pic, by the way! =)

Also...
I got so busy getting carried away rambling in my previous post that I forgot to pay any attention to your situation at all! =(
I wish I had said it sooner but I'm sorry to hear that you got bit!
Good thing for the hoody! lol ...I'm glad you had it!

but yeah .___.
& as for your friend hugging him after what he did...
That's only re-enforcing his bad behavior. =|
Tell her [or him] not to do that! XD ...that's not exactly proper discipline! XDD
LMAO

I am really sorry though. =(
Nobody should have to suffer for somebody else's lack of responsibility. =|
    B15.png
  • I agree, he's a really pretty/cute dog. ^^

Its okay XD I'm more concerned about Badger. You couldn't tell I was bitten the next day. So it wasn't horribly bad.

I know...@_@; She doesn't get the whole discapline thing. She thinks its mean to yell at a dog when they're bad
    Bye.
  • I hate to say it, but I think your friend is a bad owner =/ She might think she's doing her dog a world of good by showing him affection all the time, but she isn't. Someday, whoever owns the cats he's killing could get fed up and shoot him. Someday, he could hurt or kill someone's child while he's running loose... he's a big, strong dog - little kids seem tough, but they aren't invincible, and it's happened before and the dog didn't even intend for it. By letting their dog go unchecked, it's a bigger problem than what happens in their house. Eventually, someone else is going to decide to put him down themself or call animal control, and unless his owner's get his behavior under control, I expect they will decide he is a dangerous dog and put him down. I know you can't do anything, though, and if you could you would. I'm sorry to hear about your hand! Maybe if you bring her some of our arguements, you'll make a dent. =/
    seaoats_insanityban.png
  • I agree.

I'm not gonna take it up with her. I've tried, but she won't listen.
    Bye.
  • Hahaha. This is the reason I like animals way more than people.

One of my dogs (Border Collie mix) bit me while I was breaking up a fight between him and another male. It bled through many band-aids, and I probably needed stictches. A year later, I still have a scar on my hand.
Did I put him to sleep? No.

Another one of our dogs, a lab mix, was a stray. We've had him over a year and he is still incredibly thin. We feed him enough, yet he is so used to eating almost nothing. He is skittish around males and has bitten my dad, brother, and many guy friends. Has he been put to sleep? No.

It isn't a very wise decision to be sitting near an aggressive dog and a toy anyways.

If your friend gets into any trouble, I wouldn't be surprised if they never talked to you again, I know I wouldn't. This isn't just about the dog, but being a friend. If they hit you, would you be a big enough jerk to go run and tattle? I don't think so, and it's the same concept.

And if you really were an animal lover, why would you even think about getting an animal put to sleep over something as petty as a sore arm?

But hey, I give people worse injuries daily playing lacrosse. Maybe I should just go die, too.

    1) They didn't tell me he was aggressive until after I got bit. If you had read the replies, you'd know that.

2) She didn't get into trouble. And yes, if one of my friends hit me, I'd tell on them and smile at their conciquences. I don't take that crap from people. And I can tell we wouldn't get along :3

3) He's attacked numerous people (hurt them much worse than he hurt me) and killed numerous peoples' pets. I don't want to see him put to sleep (I just want something done so he wont be as dangerous), and no one's doing anything about his aggression, so you don't have to worry about anything happening to him (just other people and other people's pets).

4) Please refrain from replying to this post again if you intend to be rude. I don't want this to turn into an argument, but I have no problem asking an op to lock this if people can't be mature.
    Bye.
  • And if you knew your parents would overreact, why did you tell them?

If the dog is really that bad, more the reason to go over to your friend's house and train it.

What's so awful to you guys about the dog getting shot? Saying it should be put to sleep is the exact same thing as they both end in death.
  • Because I'm honest and they need to know if I'm in danger when I go somewhere.

I don't know the first thing about training an aggressive dog. Besides, it isn't my responsibility to train him, they should care enough to do it themselves.

Who said anything about a dog getting shot? -_-; And no, it isn't the exact same thing, because being shot is painful and they suffer until they die. And the only pain from being put to sleep is a pinch when they're given the shot, and they die peacefully.
    Bye.

Well, it's not that she's not mature, Kite. She's just irrational. Maturity is something the body goes through thus the mind follows.

No, no that's not how it works in life. Let's not try to go gangster in this forum and worry about homies..this and that bull crap.
