I think mutts should be breedable like all other dogs. I love mutts, and I don't think it's fair that they can't be bred! I mean, how are you supposed to get to 10x4s otherwise? Please consider this!
I guess, but some people might think that mutts aren't very... pure, and may not take a liking to the idea of having them bred, as it only increases the amount of mutts on VP, which shows some bad breeding.

Of course, this is only my opinion.
I know that a lot of ppl don't like them, but I love mutts, I have one RL and she is mah baby gurl. I mean, it would be more realistic cuz rl mutts aren't born neutered are they?
True, in Real Life. However, perhaps its for the best. I mean, in Real Life, mutts are the better choice for buying a dog, because of its mixed ancestry, and its unlikely that the mutt will get any "ailments" of that certain breed. However, I don't think that people would want mutts, as they may hope to acheive 10x4s in a certain breed, not in mutts.
I want to acheive 10x4s in mutts. And I know in RL they are the best choice, which reminds me, it would also be fun if illnesses and genetic diseases like hip dysplasia were added.
Just thought I'd put in:

You can get 10x4 mutts on vp. Just breed a high stared dog to another high stared dog of another breed (for example: 10x4 border collie to 10x4 boxer) make sure they're both stat maxxed and Wah-La! You have a 10x4 mutt. =3

Closest thing I have to a 10x4 mutt: http://www.virtualpups.com/index.php?r=dog/view&id=782625

What makes you think mutts are healthier than purebreds? Mutts can get genetic issues from both parents.

For example: You breed a Labrador which is prone to hip dysplacia to a Poodle which is also prone to hip dysplacia, the puppies have just as much of a chance getting hip dysplacia as breeding Lab to Lab or Poodle to Poodle.

Makes no sense saying mutts are healthier.

In the past Mutts were generally healthier for one reason. When a litter of mutts was born it was usually an accident, often it was not known the mother was pregnant, or if it was they didn't seek vet care. When the pups were born, any sick/unhealthy ones usually died because it wasn't seen as worth it to try and save them.

With purebreds, so much money is involved in each litter that efforts are usually made to do anything possible to ensure every pup lives and is sold.

So with mutts there was a natural culling, and only the strong survived. This is no longer the case with people breeding "designer mutts". The same money is now involved in the litters, so it is essential to the breeder that all possible pups survive.

Unfortunately not all people out there who breed make sure to screen the parents for all known genetic disorders

Tell me about it

I work part time at a groomer . . . Quite frankly, the worse dogs we get in are little 'designer' dogs.
Not all are horrible, but most have one or more of the following:
-Bad attitude (ie. Aggressive)
-Some type of genetic disorder. Quite a few have very bad limbs that give them problems, because they inherited off one or both of their parents.

The worse breed that I've come across it Maltese-Shi.tzu (it was edited beforeXD). . . On average, they are little horrors! Luckily they're small enough not to cause too much of a problem for us . . .
So do I, it would make people more likely to have clean lines.

I don't agree with this. I don't think some linebreeding is going to cause genetic diseases. And I personally have linebred dogs just because I don't like what a lot of people are breeding, so I wont breed to their dogs.

The idea that you have to have a 100% clean line is frankly ridiculous to me. Its not at all realistic.

ETA: If we're going to have virtual genetic diseases, then we need to have virtual health-testing, too.
They have genetic disorders on other dog sims, like [removed] I used to play. Log into the guest account, click on the dog, and see what I mean.
Oriyana, I was talking about genetic diseases such as hip dysplacia. It doesn't kill the dog naturally, but it sure makes life misearble at times for them. Some dogs might have to be put to sleep due to the severity and the pain they are in, but there is no natural death with diseases such as hip dysplacia, entropian, luxating patellas, hearing impairments, and things like that.

Genetic diseases like heart problems, and thyroid problems can kill dogs but they rarely die when they are pups due to genetic issues. Most genetic problems in dogs show up after the 2 year old mark. Therefore, a lot of the pups in a litter would survive with their defects for a while. Unless they litter got parvo or something..

I agree with you though, back in the day, mutts may have been healthier just by coincidence, but the people breeding them now have no regard for the poor babies once they leave their puppymill or backyard. Same with purebreds. Its so sad.

Hope that wasn't offending, I sure didn't mean for it to be. :P
I play on another dog sim, too. There was originally genetic diseases, but it got removed because nobody liked them being there. I wouldn't have a problem with them if, as I said, there is virtual health testing to go along with it.

I agree.
That would sort of be the point. You have to screen your dogs for diseases before breeding or the pups won't sell. So people will know if the mother dog was screened, there should be some sort of indication on the page. Like on VHR, it says if the horse has the disease on its page.
1. i like the idea of diseases...however i think peoples would want an exception for imports...it would be no fun using your import options and get sick dogs...

2. Heterosis should take effect...while its true if you breed 2 dogs of difrent breeds who are both prone to having like HD then yes the puppies have the same chanse as a purebreed in those breeds...however if you breed a breed1 prone to HD with a breed2 who wasnt then the puppies would be less prone to get HD then purebreeds of breed1 but more prone then purebreeds of breed2

3. Linebreeding goods and bads...it can be bad if used so much it lead to inbreeding in such a scale you get more sicknesses...if the linebreeding is with distant relations it can be used as good in that you can select out sick individuals go through a botleneck and then outbreed again with a breed who yes would have a litle smaller genepool but a healthier one if you succed
Buffy doesnt like it.
My life is devoted to my lines and they are hard enough to keep up w. without diseases running through them. and my champion flyball dogs dont need to get a hip displacement. :?
This is an old post.

It would not apply to imports. Only the offspring can have HD.

And Buffers, if your flyballers are well-bred with HD free parents, you probably will have no problems. There is still that slight chance though...

If you get every dog in your line checked for hip dysplasia and only breed the ones that are found HD free, you won't have problems.

Plus, it would discourage the breeding of untrained dogs as since it would show that the parents (and possibly the pup) have HD, so the offspring would be hard to sell because no one wants a sick puppy.
prohibiting the breeding of different purebreds so their isnt as much of a problem with the overbreeding of mutts...You should only be able to breed Mutts with Mutts...not purebreds with purebreds to make mutts...they would have to be imports...
