Breed Specific Events?

edited August 2005 in Game Suggestions
Would anyone else want breed specific events to be available? for example for sponsors who do not own clubs could create say a GSD only herding event. Now, though you can put that in the title, others are still entered such as bcs and aussies. but what if we could create events that are actually for gsds only, not the whole herding group? That way we can also re-do the top dogs page to be top of breed instead, ne?

  • But the rub comes that certain breed would dominate.

So they would end up making the big bucks just by the fact they would have so many more events to enter. It's kind of like the breeds in the lupus catagory now. On any given day they tend to have way, way more events they can enter than any other type of dog.
(terrier too at the moment)

If I remember correctly Nef said last time this was discussed that if there was sufficient interest she'd consider adding the option. So now that it's been brought up again she might reconsider .
  • From what SableAntelope said I don't think I'd like specific breed events... I don't know how informed she (he?) is but what she (he?) said makes sense :P .

  • yes, but its already kind of happening anyway. it would give us a better best of breed option too b/c the top dog list is really messed up right now

  • I'd love to see breed events just because for example my Windhounds will NEVER EVER beat the Greyhounds in racing but that is what I want to do with them :( the problem comes with when people make events for the breeds that no one seems to breed :( then they get no entires and the show has to be deleted or when the show never gets enough entries but even with this I still would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see them. Top breed chart or whatever ya wanna call it there are over 200 breeds sooo that would be kinda a pain I think.

yeah, that would be nice. like pic both kinds of corgi's instead of just one
maybe have it where you pick a group then check off the breeds?
like I choose herding, but I dont want say bcs and aussies
so i'd check off
German shepherds
corgi's
ect
    MiniAussiebanner-1.jpg
  • and you would have a better chance of getting more entries!

  • I'd like to see a breed specific option, as long as it wasn't abused, maybe with a limit set on the number of restricted events in a day. Otherwise it'll be just like the clubs used to be, where somebody knows they have the only dogs of a certain breed and creates all their events for that breed alone.

    Well, my dog loves me.
  • I like the checking off so say you wanted all short legged breeds lmao that would be cool

  • Technically as things are now you shouldn't be making events labelled as 'for such and such a breed only'. Nef even made an admin announcement clarifying that.

Still look at what's out there.
Judging from that if you add breed specific events you're going to get like 25 GSD events, 10 wolf events, 10 Pitbull events, 1 each for a handful of other breeds and that'll be the way it goes day after day.

Folks who want to keep and show the rare breeds are going to end up loosing out because there wont be enough demand for them to run shows for their type of dog. So they'll be even more limited in what they can enter. And even if they are a sponsor and create events for their rare breed they likely wont have enough entries to run one everyday like say GSD keepers would have. Especially if it's something like say a clumber spaniel that they normally could enter in sporting events but there's only a handful in the game.

Cleary I'm in the minority thinking for this, but just my two cents. :P
  • Yes that is true but if you could pick several breeds for one show then you would have more of a demand..

so maybe you want Goldens , Flats, Curlies and Labs... all the retriever breeds or heh all the setters. Not saying this is even doable but it would be nice to get my lesser known breeds from butting heads with the dogs that are much better is certain events :(

Technically nothing says we can't.

When creating events for the public, you are creating them for the public. Do not send threats to players who enter their pups, harass them, or post rude event names. Perhaps if we believe there is enough players we may design events so you can create breed specific only events, meanwhile, if you do not want people to enter your events, do not create them.

It doesn't say we can't, just that we shouldn't threaten or harress people who enter events that we make. Though if people were curtious or were worried about eventing being fair for everyone, they'd not disregard those events posted with special titles.

I'm all for breed specific events, and stat level events, specifically because you get those people who can't be curtious to what an event title says.

  • I'd like breed specific events..this has been discussed many times before...

as for the Lupus events..yeah there are a lot...because I own five sponsers..three of which are prestige and when I feel like entering I make all I can make so I don't have to pull my dogs every day. Not like anyone else can't make the event types they want on their accounts..and actually I get more entries in lupus than I do when I hold open.

And as far as I know Nef only made that announcement that Jinxx quoted because people were posting RUDE event titles targetting specific players..not because they were posting breed specific.
  • stat levels like
Below 100
Between 101-125 ect right

That would be very very nice for novices and non-training sponsors

  • Yes, like that. Some of us try to do it now in event titles but there are those who routinely disregard it and enter anyway. Very frustrating when you're trying to give those people who don't have access to a training kennel or dogs trained before the new bonus some events they can enter and have a good chance of winning.

  • i'm not sure everyone who enters is discurteous, they may just be inattentive...
sometimes when i'm entering events (well..this is on vhr..,but i'm sure it applies) i just search all of one type and enter enter enter enter (etc *L*) as i train the turns... by about the third page of some types i really don't pay much attention..
basically i rely on the drop down box coding, if the name appears i enter it, if it doesn't i don't... sometimes if its an open event i'll take a second look.but so many titles are just nonsense honestly, i don't really pay attention after a while.

now, of course some people don't care either way, but i would never mean to upset someone, merely that entering events is tedious while training and i lose my focus..the only thing i look for is the "you can only enter 2 events per turn" message that means i messed up my rythym.

(edit: i just wanted to add if someone messages me at least civily, i'll always take the entry out if i'm in time...)

anywhoo, i agree that by stat level would be very nice! it would polarize events to a degree between novices and sponsers.. but the new training levels do that already....so..i don't see too much harm in it.

it be cute if it could be done by height or something like that, can they be organized by age and points? it be nice to add some of those criteria also.

  • I agree with Amayakoi. I dont always look at the titles of events either because i'm usually training and in a rush to get it done asap and what not. I just search all events and enter them. if my dogs dont show up in the drop down menue i move on. Though if people would pm me civily, I would withdraw them from the events, but either no one pms me or they're rude about it. I do know people who are out there that do it just to be rude, or because they think they can beat others out though. I've seen it before when I made some GSD events.

  • Isn't it easier to read an event title before you click it to see what dogs are allowed in there instead of loading up the event and seeing if your dog can be entered in it?

Vhr does have a lot of stupid event titles, but that's never really been the case on VP, most titles here say what type of dog should be entered. I enter my dogs while I train too but I'm never too busy to take a second to read the event title/information because personally I don't want to wait for the actual event page to load unless I'm sure my dog can enter it.

As for people messaging, because of what Nef posted about the events and people 'messaging/harrassing' the entrants a lot of times if you very politely ask someone to remove their dogs they'll say no and that they'll turn you in for harassing them. Especially the people who think that they're entitled to rudely ignore event titles because we're all breaking the rules making those kinds of events and they can enter whatever they 'damn well please'.

Personally I don't see the difference between breed/stat specific titles and making 'group' events, except the fact that it hasn't been coded yet to keep dogs in/out of events on those specific things. I'd like to see events where you could only allow certain stats too, I've tried running these types for people and everyone ignores the event titles, which is very frustrating whether they do it on purpose or because they're just being lazy and not taking 2 seconds to look at the title.

So while just mass entering on vhr might be suitable it hasn't ever really been the case here (and I've shown actively on both).
  • ....and that pic has what to do with this topic..?
    MiniAussiebanner-1.jpg
  • Well now Miroku, I think that question has an obvious answer.

Absolutely nothing, of course. :D

But anyway, I'm in favor of breed only events. Because it'd be cool to be able to run weight-pulling events that neo's or bull mastiffs can't dominate. Or doberman only shutzhund events. Stuff that IRL breeds are known to be good at (like Silken Windhounds and other racing breeds at Lure coursing), but usually end up being steamrollered by other dogs here (like Greyhounds).
Friendly until crossed. Consider yourself warned.

  • That sounds like a good idea, Miroku. Its very annoying when you make an event and the name specificly says GSDS ONLY and some novice enters their untrained border collie in it. I think Nef should make this. It would be a lot more convinient.
