Just out of curiosity do any of you lovely VP people out there place bets? I've seen a few dogs that get bet on and as of late I've been getting more into placing bets myself. I think it would be neat to see this aspect of the game get used more. I'm not sure why really, just think it would be interesting if it came more alive.

 • Yes! I've always kind of secretly wished that betting was a thing on here. Really, the amount of dogs that get bet on leaves the odds so high that there is never much of a pay out. If there were more bets, it could actually make it fun and worthwhile!

There's a very good chance I'll be making a betting league then, seems like I'm gaining more interest :D I think it would b a neat part of VP. So keep your eyes peeled for an official post some time before next week's event of the week is announced :D
 • The thing that's always irked me with betting is it doesn't tell you who or how many people bet on the dog. If you start this you should have a thread where people have the option to voice (certainly don't have to) how much they bet on what dog.

That's always bugged me too, I wish at the very least it would tell you x amount of people have placed a bet on this dog. I hadn't thought about that aspect but will include the option in the official thread. Then it'll be easier to keep track of for those who want to voice their bets. Thanks for bringing that up and suggesting that Frost!
 • Since this thread has been posted I have been betting, but I have noticed a for sure change in betting activity. I used to never see a bet being placed, but now I see at least two dogs being betted on in several different types of events; not just mushing. I am glad to see that this feature is becoming more and more active.

 • Okay so I just noticed a flaw with betting. Okay so I betted on dogs and the event was ran. Normally when I betted and won some VPC it would automatically be bookmarked. Well I just checked on some mushing events I had betted on and I had won some VPC but there was no indication that I had some earnings. I just wish it would show up on the management page or something, maybe say this event had been ran check your bets! Lol
I agree. I also think that you should have a few days (maybe 3) to collect the bet. Some people cannot constantly keep checking on the events to see if they have been ran on time or not.

 • Thanks for the head's up, I think I got all my bets placed last week LOL

As far as I know, there is no time limit for collecting bets. I don't think I'd bet on anything months, but when I went to check that bookmarks had been placed after reading this thread, there was one from the last time I'd bet. The not placing the bookmark sometimes is a long standing glitch that even the previous owner couldn't pin down.

Getting a notice for bets on the activity log was something that was asked for in Beta, though I've not checked to see if it's happened.

Nice thing about more people betting is getting more money if you win place or show. • Can someone explain how the odds work? Seems like a silly question

At first I thought it was fairly straightforward... If a lot of people bet on one dog the odds go down, as in people expect the dog to win so you don't win as much if it does. And if you bet on a dog and there are a lot of bets on other dogs the odds on your dog go up, as in people expect other dogs to win (your dog is less likely to win) so you win more money if your dog wins. It seemed to work that way, but it was hard to tell when there were only ever two or three bets placed per event!

However since this whole thing started I've been seeing some strange things. For example, I checked out one event where a dog had odds like 175:1... There were no other dogs in that event with bets placed on it that I can recall, or maybe one other (I can't remember if that was before or after I placed my bet, but either way the odds were high). So basically that had to mean that there were a bunch of bets on that one dog but the odds were high...

So how does it work? Am I more likely to win more money on a dog with few bets or a lot of bets on it? Is it better to place bets early (so as more people place bets on other dogs the odds increase) or late (so that I can bet on the dog with the highest odds)?

 • To be honest, I'm not completely sure how betting works either. It depends on how many people bet, on how many different dogs, as well as how much money is bet. I know it doesn't work like real life bets since those odds are set by the bookmakers depending on who is favored to win.

For me, if someone has already bet on the dog I think will win, I won't bet on it. I get better odds if I bet on the dog that I think will come in second. For instance, in this event <a href="http://virtualpups.com/viewevent.php?event=385962"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://virtualpups.com/viewevent.php?event=385962; , I think Nacie's Cyrano will win, however, the odds were already like 3/1, so I bet on the dog I think will come in second, Nacie's Lancelot, and got odds of 18/1, which also raised the odds on the dog I think will win to 4/1, along with raising the odds on the other dogs in the event. Because someone else placed a bet on a new dog or 2 since I placed mine, my odds went up to 25/1 and Cyrano's went up to 6/1. With a $100 bet, I will make 2600 if my dog wins. Even if it comes in 2nd, I should still win 1300. Whereas if I had also bet on Cyrano, the odds wouldn't change and even if it won, I'd only win about $700. Whoever bet on Para's Exia will make bank if they win and I would guess they've bet more than $100.

I don't bet until a dog I think will win enters or until right before I think events will be run if I'm not real sure about the competition.

This is something I'm hoping we can figure out better when/if Para gets time to set up the betting sheet.
