Curious About... Question Added

Eventing imports. I have an idea that's I'm going to be tinkering with and I'm wondering if any of you lovely people are eventing imports? I know there are a lot that event in conformation and showmanship but I'm more interested in them being shown in the other events. I know they would bomb in events such as racing & weight pull that need high birth strength. So would like to hear from you guys about your imports. If you have some that you're showing how are they doing? Would love to see some links if you don't mind.

Ok so something else for discussion. I know that just because a pup comes from parents that are good eventers doesn't mean it will do well, but what have you guys found to be true. Does it seem to not really matter? I know I've worked up lines for stats and then event the end result. Sometimes they do well, others not so much. What about you guys who have pups from parents that are good eventers? Does it seem to at least give you a feel for how the pup will do?

 • I've been showing this Giant Schnauzer import <a href="http://virtualpups.com/index.php?r=dog/view&id=685314"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://virtualpups.com/index.php?r=dog/view&id=685314; in Dock Jumping. 3 of his 18 events are herding, which I don't know why he was shown in that. But the other 15 are all dock jumping, and he's placed fairly well. I've only just started recently, but I can keep you updated on how things go. :)

He did ok. The only reason he sparked my interest in the first place was his INSANE a/c... I thought about testing him out in other events but didn't get around to it. I don't see that many imports in events, unless they also have pretty high a/c (usually 500+) so that might be the secret to import success.

Of course I do have other import eventers but like you said they're in conformation, obedience and showmanship.

 • @ ChriDani : Thanks for sharing and please do let me know how it continues to do. This is a good sign for what direction I'm planning on moving.

@Bryson : Thanks for sharing too! I'm kinda thinking sense events are scoring wonky right now this would be a good time to work with imports a bit and in doing so I will be setting myself up for a long term plan I'm working on :D
 • I will definitely keep you updated :)

 • Honestly I tend to look more at a pup's stats than its lineage when I'm trying to determine whether it will do well in events when I'm dealing with my own dogs that I bred...simply because there are so many other factors that could have affected the parents' success (the competition could have been easier/harder, they may have been used for different events than the pup is intended for, they may have had high a/c, they may have been entered in only team or club events, etc etc etc). However if I'm on the fence or unsure about a pup, I will look through its bloodlines and see if its parents and/or siblings did well and what they did well in, then I'll compare the stats to see if I think the pup has a good chance.

And since I know sort of where that question is coming from... I also want to point out that when I am buying eventers it does make a difference if a pup was bred from successful eventers. If the parents got to at least National and had a decent wps % (for me I like to see 30-50%) I'll feel much more confident about buying the pup for eventing.

 • I'm not sure if this will help but my dog MBD Max was on the top list (and at number #1) for a while <a href="http://virtualpups.com/index.php?r=dog/view&id=1168491"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://virtualpups.com/index.php?r=dog/view&id=1168491; and I sold a pup to Bobby Cat
<a href="http://virtualpups.com/index.php?r=dog/view&id=2042769"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://virtualpups.com/index.php?r=dog/view&id=2042769; and passed Max in score, but I believe its down to luck right now in eventing, as I'v tried to show dogs with better stats and they fail unlike my lot that have hit the top list, its a pain in the but really.

 • I think you're right tbone about eventing being a lot of luck right now. I love eventing and it's my biggest passion here on VP but here lately I've grown frustrated. I've been kind of revamping my event line up and goals and had bred up some dogs I thought were decently good or should be. Welp they kinda bomb >__< I know things are wonky so maybe when the new version launches they will do better. Thinking about kinda of letting them rot in boarding for a good while and just tinkering around with other endeavors and see how they play out.

I've got an idea but not sure if it's worth the effort right now. I'm kinda wanting to start some [HH] lines from my own imports but instead of working up a whole line at once and eventing the end result, event the imports to either 9-12 years and or national-international (whichever comes first) and then breeding the next generation. Would continue in this manner so that the whole line has eventing backgrounds. This would be a long term and ongoing project and one I think would be neat. Just not sure if it would be worth it. I have one line I'm testing/ have just started and thinking of doing a second. See how they go and move from there. Guess it couldn't hurt to try.
