Competition Ideas?

edited March 2014 in General Discussion
It's been a little while since there's been an event-based competition (going on a month since the most recent one ended), so I'm thinking of hosting one! But first I want to see if there's even enough interest in a competition to make it worthwhile to have one, considering how quiet the event scene has been recently :| Also, seeing how iffy event entries have been, I'm not sure what kind of competition would go over best. Any input would be great!

Here's what I really want to know from you guys!
- Would anyone be interested in participating in an event-based competition right now?
- Would you be more likely to participate in a competition based on a event that is currently popular and filling more quickly (like Agility or Flyball), or would you rather see more events being created in less popular categories (like Dock Jumping or Schutzhund)?
- Would you prefer a more specific event competition (Herding), a general-skills competition (Working), or a type/group competition (Toy breeds, Terriers, etc)?

 • Personally, I would love to see a breed/group competition! There's been so many competitions based on a specific event and I'd love to see a bit of a change! (:

 • I'd love to see one of these! I think, with eventing having been so quiet, the broader it is, the better. Like, if somebody could enter a dog that they already had, instead of breeding, I think they'd be quicker to enter.

Edit:

I had this idea a while back, but I noticed how Border Collies can be used for just about everything. I thought it would be pretty cool to see an event without them, but that would probably turn a lot of people off.

 • I agree, Flash! There's been a competition for probably every event type so I think it would be fun to do something different, like a "Working Dogs Only" competition. Also, a competition like that leaves room for people to show their dogs in all different event types, which could boost the general event entries :-)

Fro, I like the idea of being able to enter dogs you already have. Most competitions require dogs to be untouched which means you have to breed or buy new dogs. Maybe I can just restrict event level, say nothing higher than Novice?

I also like your idea about excluding Border Collies, but at the same time I'm not sure about excluding specific breeds. Greyhounds are also used a lot in competition. I remember Ivy tried a No BC Herding club and ran events for a little while, and it did ok. But I worry that people may complain or debate which breeds are popular, so either I'll choose a type/group or I'll let it be completely open.

 • *Raises Hand* I've been wanting another competition as well and love entering them. I had considered hosting one but as you know my net just isn't reliable at the moment. Really I'm open to almost any type of competition. But like Frost said I would love to be able to use some dogs I already have. I don't mind breeding dogs for competitions but at the same time I have specific event line ups and once I breed a new dog I hate to not continue to event it and thus kinda of have to squeeze it into my mix which throws me off as I have 4 dogs per event.

Another reason I like the idea of being able to use dogs you already have because in real life you would be using the same dog for multiple competitions and then it has more of a chance to build up a good record and some nice tournament wins.

As for restricting the competition level it would exclude some of my dogs but not all and it brings up a neat idea though I'm not sure how to work it into one big competition so it may lead on to multiple ones which would be fun. You could have competitions for say novice level working dogs or what have you. Then the next competition for say national show dogs and so on and so forth.

I would love to see a mushing competition but its been really slow lately and not sure how much interest there would be. I have several teams so if I could use some of my current ones in that it would also be great
 • The only reason I'm thinking about restricting competition level is to try to make it somewhat fair. Even though players like you would still be able to use dogs you already have, there would be people that may have to buy/breed new dogs. You would already know exactly what your National level dog does well in and what it doesn't do well in, while that player would just be testing their new dog out.

I do like the idea of finding a way to have multiple competition levels. Perhaps there can be some sort of "handicap" system where dogs with higher competition levels will automatically have a few points deducted or something? Rather than hosting multiple competitions, as I don't know how many people have National and International dogs and are active enough at the moment to participate in a competition...

Right now I'm really toying with the idea of a competition that involves multiple event types, rather than one specific event type. Something like, each player can enter up to four dogs but each dog has to be from a different group, then everyone enters all events and we'll see whose dogs do best in general?

 • That makes sense, I hadn't really thought about it in that way of knowing what my dogs do well in VS lower level dogs still in the testing phase. Most likely because I only event mine in 1-2 specific events from the start of their carers and never really try them in other events but not every player does this. The handicap idea isn't bad either. It would then level the field a bit for those with higher level dogs.I have several dogs in my breeding kennel that either haven't evented at all or are junior and novice so I'll have a good base to choose from ;D

I like the idea you're tinkering with right now. Sounds good to me. I think with a broader range of events you would get more interest sense eventing is low right now. I'm hoping more competitions like what your tinkering with will boost eventing overall and get some newer players involved. I think using dogs we already have would make it easier for sponsors and novices to get involved in. Sense most these dogs will have some sort of event record you'll have to come up with a scoring rubric for the actual competition but that shouldn't be hard to do or hard to keep up with in a thread :D
 • I'm the same way, as far as picking one or two event types for a dog from the beginning. But sometimes a dog will surprise me and just be terrible in events I'd expect it to do well in, and then do great in events I would expect the dog to suck in lol

I'm still debating over whether to use some kind of handicap system or just restrict beginning competition level. I'm not entirely sure how to work in a handicap. With the scoring, I'll probably use earnings to determine winners (I'll just have to note where each dog started). So maybe I could deduct a percentage...like Regional dogs get 5% deducted from final score, National and International get 10% deducted or something like that... But that seems like it would be really complicated so I'll probably just end up saying dogs have to be less than Regional

 • I think limiting to regional and below would be fair and probably easier. I'm looking forward to this when you get the kinks worked out. Here's hoping my net will be in better condition by then
