Can you guess what breed? [pic heavy]

edited October 2013 in General Discussion
So we recently adopted our newest family member and we have no idea what kind of dog he is... Just out of curiosity, does anybody have any ideas what special brand of mutt he is? He has a blue/purple tongue, you can't tell from the pictures.

<a href="http://s1277.photobucket.com/user/RaeBryson/media/Dogs/Photo0429_zpseebcacfb.jpg.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/RaeBryson/Dogs/Photo0429_zpseebcacfb.jpg"; alt="http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/RaeBryson/Dogs/Photo0429_zpseebcacfb.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<a href="http://s1277.photobucket.com/user/RaeBryson/media/Dogs/Photo0399_zpseecd37a5.jpg.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/RaeBryson/Dogs/Photo0399_zpseecd37a5.jpg"; alt="http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/RaeBryson/Dogs/Photo0399_zpseecd37a5.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<a href="http://s1277.photobucket.com/user/RaeBryson/media/Dogs/Photo0392_zps9bcd0d6f.jpg.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/RaeBryson/Dogs/Photo0392_zps9bcd0d6f.jpg"; alt="http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/RaeBryson/Dogs/Photo0392_zps9bcd0d6f.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<a href="http://s1277.photobucket.com/user/RaeBryson/media/Dogs/Photo0431_zpsa0372049.jpg.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/RaeBryson/Dogs/Photo0431_zpsa0372049.jpg"; alt="http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/RaeBryson/Dogs/Photo0431_zpsa0372049.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

 • Lab & Shar pei mix maybe? Adorable dog :)

 • Chow Chows have blue tongues. I think Sar-Peis might have blue tongues too? I don't know of any other breeds that have blue tongues. So probably either a Chow Chow mix or Sar Pei mix. No idea on the other breeds in the mix though. Maybe some terrier as those button-ears remind me of terrier type dogs.

 • Rhodesian Ridgebacks can also have blue tongues I believe.

So I'd say RR, lab, terrier mix of some sort.
He's a cutie, that's for sure!

 • If not a Shar-pei mix, I would definately say he was a Shiba x or some sort, most likely a Shiba x Labrador as he seems to have similar shading to the shiba, the eyes are similar and in the first pic his face looks sharper :) I would say that some part of him is most definately lab though with those ears and that shape.

I'mma go with shar pei x labrador XD

 • Definitely has shar-pei somewhere in there :)
That last picture reminds me of many shar-pei mixes I've seen; the ear set (though his ears are too big for a shar pei), the thick neck and the forehead. The other pictures confuse me though :P I do see Rhodesian Ridgeback in some pics and lab in others D:

You'll be able to tell more from the dogs behaviour when it matures though :)
 • We thought he had some Shar-Pei in him... Never thought about Lab though but it makes sense! He definitely has the personality of a Lab/Shar-Pei cross. I definitely hadn't considered Ridgeback, but it is possible

Thanks for the input everybody!

 • I have owned a Shar-Pei x Lab before and she did not look anything like this. She had the wrinkles like a Shar-Pei and the structure of a Labrador. However, my good friend owns a Chow Chow x Lab mix and I see a lot of resemblance between him and your newest addition.

Btw not all cross breeds turn out the same even if their parents are exactly the same. Some may inherit more of mum's genes than dad's. For example a curly coat dog x smooth coat might have 10 pups - 3 could be curly coat and the rest smooth. Obviously dominant genes will play a bigger part etc. But yeah, best not to pass it off just because your's wasn't that way.

-crawls back into the corner-

 • That's what I love about mutts, you never really know what you're gonna get. Oh well...

*UPDATE*
So "Mario" (as the shelter called him, even though he never answered to it lol) has been re-named "Wesson"...yesss like the cooking oil  No really, my hubby's a bit of a gun enthusiast so more like Smith &... He gets along great with our other four doggies and pretty much settled right in immediately. He's a huge goofball

 • I still say he could have some Chow in there. Not all Chow mixes have to be long-haired or look very much like a Chow.

Right now at the shelter I'm volunteering at, we have 3 Chow mixes. One you can see alot of Chow features in. Another looks more like a tan Shepherd dog, and the last one looks very similiar to a yellow labrador other than the eye shape and color.

The site won't let me link directly to the dog pages,so just look for the names Ianto Jones,Lady, and Coco on Page 2. Coco reminds me a little bit of your dog.
<a href="http://www.houstonspca.org/site/PageNavigator/adopt_main_dogs"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.houstonspca.org/site/PageNav ... _main_dogs

 • The thing about shelters is that they can only give their best guess as to what the dogs are, unless somebody surrenders puppies and can say "My two dogs, a [this breed] and a [that breed], got tangled up and we got these"... So as far as you know those are Chow mixes or they could not have any Chow in them at all... They had Wesson listed as a "Shepherd mix", what exactly that means, no one knows  When I was growing up one of our neighbors let her dogs do whatever they wanted (none were altered of course) and so she got all kinds of mixes. She had a pair of Lab x Beagle puppies in the same litter that looked nothing like each other! One looked like a long-legged beagle with kinda shaggy fur, and the other looked like a purebred lab!

 • Most of the dogs at that shelter are owner surrenders. Some they know both breeds( I guess someone owned two unfixed dogs that I had an oops or their dog had an oops with a neighbors dog in which both dogs were known), and some they know only one breed( I guess because the person who surrendered the dog had a female dog of a known breed that got pregnant I guess). When we have strays in, it is just a guess though. I think all the dogs I showed you were owner surrenders and the owners told the shelter that their dogs were part Chow.

 • That kinda was the point I was trying to say ^_^ Just so people don't get all high and mighty over knowing exactly what breed is in them lol.

He could be like 5 different breeds for all we know lol, which when mangled together it comes out as something that looks like something else! Those ears you see on things like shar pei dogs, or even terriers. But from other features he could have either lab or shepherd. Could be aaaanything! And with shelter dogs, just because the owner says it is one thing, doesn't always mean they are right. They could get the name mixed up, or just full out have no clue wtf they are on about.

They do have "DNA tests" that kinda help tell what it is, but its not 100% reliable. And obviously can be costly, but is an option if you are absolutely going insane to find out.

I thought about getting it done for my dog. We got him from a rescue centre, and they had him down as a Malinois cross. For insurance purpose we have registered him as a cross breed because its cheaper than pure breeds! But also because we don't have papers to prove otherwise. And some pictures I've seen they look different to him, but other pictures I've seen he looks exactly like them. I could say he was anything to the stranger that asks me in the street, as they've no idea what a malinois is anyway. They all think he is a german shepherd lmao. Shows what they know about dogs! But I like to just say he is a malinois straight up =D

 • When anyone asks we just say he's "a big adorable mutt" What do they care what various and sundry breeds he may or may not be crossed with lol

 • I believe he definitely has some kind of Asian Spitz type dog. His eyes are very simliar to those on Shiba Inus,Chows, Jindos, Shar-Peis, and other Asian spitz type breeds.

 • lol I think he has a bit in his mix, I think Chow is in there but I also think a few other breeds too, could have lab and shar, lucky he has a nice temp and gets on with other dogs though.
