I've been trying to get a job at a local spay/neuter clinic for the last two years. I'd LOVE to work there. I've applied 5 different times (only when they announce they're hiring, which seems to be quite frequently). I used to have a lot of acquaintances who worked there and knew my skills but most of them have left and I only know two people who work there now. Neither one are my favorite people and I guess that doesn't help me any. Although, I guess I really don't know how they feel about me.

Anyway, the announced who they hired today. And guess what! It's one of the current employee's best friends. She has no animal experience, let alone veterinary experience. In case anyone is thinking it, yes I do know her - quite well. It makes me so mad and it's so unfair. I'd kill for that job and I have all kinds of experience and training but nope, they still don't hire me. I give up. I'm not going to try again.

 • I'm in a pretty similar situation as you it seems, except I'm an Animal Attendant.
I do work experience at a vet clinic and there are TONS of us workies, they pretty much make us do the work of a vet nurse, and just don't pay us. I don't mind as I love the experience and everyone there is really friendly, but my friends that are trying to get paid jobs as vet nurses are getting frustrated and I don't blame them. The boss of the vet clinic loves hiring uni students as vet nurses and these people have no hands on experience and have to be trained as vet nurses. It just doesn't make sense when there are loads of us with actual experience studying actual vet nursing (not me :P).

But yes, I know how you're feeling and it really sucks when someone gets a job/promotion just because they know the right people. Having said that, I did get my cashier job through a friend but I worked so hard to show that I deserved the job regardless and 3yrs later, I've only reached half a step up the promotion ladder because family members of people that already work there always get promoted after like a month of being there -.-

I'll stop hijacking your vent now >.>

Are there other clinics nearby that you could apply at?
Also the fact that they're constantly hiring seems a little suss to me, I'd be asking why people have been leaving.

This. I've often wondered why they need are hiring so often. They have a lot of employees. And they constantly say, "this would be a great starting job for a vet or vet tech student."

I've applied at the other clinics around too but haven't heard from any of them. I don't think any are currently hiring. With all the experience I have, I was hoping to stay in the animal field.
 • I've seen it in several situations as well, unfortunately it seems like most of the time it's all about who you know not what you know :(

It really sucks. This job hunting thing is really putting me in a bad place. I feel really depressed that no where I actually want to work will hire me.
 • One summer I went door to door to every business in town, and then to quite a few businesses in the next town over, but not a single one called me back. It was frustrating. I ended up working at a job that my dad found, and I loved for about 6 weeks, but the fact that nowhere I went and applied to wanted to hire me was super frustrating. Then a year later my sister got the same job I applied for without even trying simply because the girl that was hired over me the year before knew us.
