• Blame insurance companies for that... when people rent a home/apartment the almost 100% of the time have insurance on the property, and most insurance companies view certain breeds as dangerous... There's a long list of breeds, some absolutely ridiculous, that will invalidate a policy or raise the rates, and most landlords just deal with this by saying "no dogs" or " no X breeds". It sucks, yes, but more than likely it's not just because your potential landlords don't like her.

 • Can't really blame the insurance companies either. Have to go back and blame bad owners who either don't train their dogs or train their dogs to fight, attack. If the insurance company insured without the caveat of no dogs of such and such a breed and one of them happens to attack, hurt or even kill someone, the insurance company is who pays out. I mean honestly, even with my big dog who would never hurt me or my children, I never left him alone with Micky or the older girls when they were younger simply because I didn't want to take the chance of something terrible happening. I certainly wouldn't have blamed a stranger for being skeptical.

Most insurance companies list all the "guard" dogs, rotties, pitbulls, doberman, german shepherd, etc and most large breeds, st bernard, great dane, etc. The chances of a smaller dog being able to kill someone is minimal, whereas a bad dobie get ahold of you and you better hope you can get away with just a bite or two.

I know this doesn't make you feel better as it still comes back to "People Suck". I'm sorry you're having to lose your friend.

I would agree with this, if the insurance companies stance on it was "any damage done by the dog is not covered by your policy" the same way floods aren't covered by most normal homeowners policies. However, the stance of "your dog could be dangerous, so get rid of it or we'll just cancel your policy, good luck getting another" is flat out ridiculous. The insurance company shouldn't punish all owners of these breeds, and in effect the breeds themselves, because some owners can be irresponsible. Many others can be, and are, completely responsible with their animals, as you yourself pointed out you were/are. I understand a company wanting to protect their bottom line, honestly I do, but this sort of thing just flat out seems to me like more of the persecution of a group of breeds based on their so called "dangerous" status.

I agree with Trianna. This is a subject I'm very passionate about. BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) is something I'm against and while I could go on and on about it and what's wrong with it I wont go off on my tangent.

@ Pom I'm so sorry to hear about this situation. I've been there before and had to rehome Bowser our first pit bull Am. bulldog mix. It was heartbreaking and i still think about and miss him often. My thoughts are with you in this difficult time.
 • I am so sorry to hear about that pom! If I could I'd foster your baby for you until you could have her back! Hopefully someone you know is willing to take her in...

BSL is one of my biggest pet peeves! It is true that all dogs can be dangerous. However, most dog "attacks" are caused by irresponsible or uneducated humans interacting with dogs in dangerous ways. For example, just a few days ago I was walking my doggies in the park, and out of nowhere a small child ran up to my Min Pin screaming "PUPPY!" His parents just watched, smiling, as he reached down to pick her up. All of my dogs are well-trained and well behaved, but to a dog a screaming child running directly at it is perceived as a threat. I had to stop him and tell him that it's not safe to run up to strange animals, and his parents actually looked at me like I did something wrong. Had my Pinner, or one of my other dogs, snapped at him, they would be trying to sue me and have my dogs put to sleep

I have never met a vicious Pit. I know they exist, but the majority of my unpleasant encounters have been with over-spoiled, undisciplined lap dogs. I have been bitten badly enough to bleed and scar, by a Chihuahua whose owner didn't restrain him even knowing that he displayed guarding behaviors over his favorite couch. I don't think it's fair to discriminate against an entire breed or breed group, just like I don't think it's fair to discriminate against an entire race or ethnic group. There are dangerous dogs, and dangerous people.

Insurance companies should stay out of it. It should be up to the apartment complexes/housing developments/etc to determine whether a dog is safe by evaluating that individual dog. Sorry about the rant, but like I said this kind of stuff really irks me...

 • I had this problem a while back with my full blooded American Pit. I found one house that allowed her, but she had to stay outside. She's an inside dog and the sweetest thing I've ever seen, but a lot of people won't see it that way :(

I've seen one aggressive pit my entire life and that's my brothers. Hes nice and lovable to us and female dogs, but will attack and kill a male dog in an instant. My brother had to almost choke him to death (by puling his collar) to get him to release our neighbors border collie :(
 • I went through the same thing Pom.
:( it sucks and its the hardest thing ever.
♡ stay strong Pom
