Breeding question

I thought a Greyhound lived longer than 12 years, so I had a female groomed to 12 years (I had been looking at a different breeds life span by accident). She hasn't auto-retired, and is pregnant. So, my question is, if I have her whelped...what happens? Will she auto-retire after the pups are born, or will she do it before so that none of the pups are born?

 • I'm not 1005 sure but was in a similar situation when I was working with my St Bernards who only live 10 years I believe. I had a female that was pregnant and was close to 10 years. I kept turning her and she went past her lifespan and did have the puppies. I think after she had the pups the next turn she auto retired. Not sure if I just got lucky or what.

i breed greyhound all the time and have dealt with this. She could retire before while still pregnant and you wont get the pups or by luck (but doubtful) she could have the pups and then retire.
 • Thanks for the input :) I guess I'll just send her to the breeder, and cross my fingers, lol

 • The age she finally retires at will vary based from dog to dog. Some dogs die the turn after they've hit the lifespan age, and some can live up to 2 or 3 months after.

There's no way to know what your dog is like until you've taken a turn.
