A world without real communication is bitter cold and full of disappointment. In the rush of the world, the art of truly expressing yourself is becoming lost or limited very quickly. Without creativity, our world might as well be colorless, odorless, and tasteless.

With that said, welcome to the Expressions Writing Contest, where a new prompt will be provided on a bi-weekly basis. You can write for as many or as few as you would like. The topics might cover values, sports, animals, or relevant issues. All topics abide by the TOS. Some weeks you will receive nothing but a quote to respond to, whereas other weeks you may receive the freedom of a short story.

To answer your question, there will be a mix of both fiction and nonfiction (short stories, researched responses, opinions, etc.) to keep the variety. For short story prompts I'll likely lean towards fiction, but you'll know for sure as they get posted. :)

  • The submissions I received were all excellent and it was extremely difficult to pick just two! Congrats to the first place winner, Paranormal Wolf, and the runner up, DJ Cowgirl!

The following entry is from Paranormal Wolf. The content belongs to Paranormal and is not to be used elsewhere without her permission.

Welcome To Ehab

Amongst the rusty dust of Mars surrounded by Eco spears Ehab, Eco-habitation, colony 001 rises over the baron planet. The first Mars colony to be established, Ehab is a utopian society for those dedicated to a better future for humanity. Advances in technology had given rise to new possibilities that a select few dared harness and dream of a better tomorrow. From this Ehab was born and has grown from a small colony dependent on supplies from the Earth to a large, thriving, sustainable, and independent society of the free thinkers.

The translucent Eco spears encompassing the colony regulate the climate to perfectly maintain proper conditions. Within the main Eco spear the temperature is maintained at a steady 75 degrees Fahrenheit. This central spear is the social hub of the colony and where most citizens choose to reside. There are various shopping centers, entertainment facilities, parks and more which are open 24/7. Many residents have homes withing this central spear. Branching off are many other spears. Each one has a climate that is conducive to its function. Some spears are dedicated to crops while others are home to livestock. Still others provide more housing, and various communities for those who want to dwell away from the boisterous central hub. Within Ehab there a spear to suit everyone's fancy.

Most of the tedious daily task are taken care of by robotics as to maximize efficiency and free time for the colony's citizens. However, not everything can be done by machines and one of the few stipulations for abiding in the colony is that everyone pull their own weight. Its mandatory for each citizen above the age of 18 to contribute their calculated hours of labor each week. The work to be done is not back breaking labor, nor does is dominate the entire day. It is simply work to keep the colony and society running smoothly so that the benefits can continue to be enjoyed. There is no form of currency, everything is free provided each citizen does their part. This allows the colony to function and grow while no one has to be overworked nor get a free ride.

Within Ehab everyone works together to build a world where petty differences are a thing of the past. Freedom is the main priority, but as the past has shown freedom does come at a cost. If everyone is not willing to abide by the few rules that maintain order and ensures the rights of all humans are preserved, they will not be tolerated within the colony. As to date Ehab has had no problems with their citizens. Everyone who chooses to live within the colony is of a like mind and ready for true peace. They have shed old ideals of hate and discrimination and embraced the notion that all humans should have equal rights and opportunities. A new breed of free thinking humans have come into existence.

Ehab is the next link in mankind’s evolutionary chain. For centuries humans have bickered, fought, and killed amongst themselves only to achieve nothing. Ehab has shown this this senseless cycle can be broken and mankind can live as one and in peace. The societies humanity has become accustomed to were built by man and reside withing man's limitations. Yet now the shackles have been broken and a new age dawns.

I have updated the prize pot to add a few extra million per spot.

Also, the new prompt has been posted! This one can be spread so many ways, so I'm sure you all can come up with a story that suits your fancy. :)

I wanted to be free, to be away from this child, but I couldn't for I have no body, I am just a head. Then she squashed me. And in her collection of plants is where I have to lie forevermore.

How desperately I want to be back floating in that dreadful river, hoping for something better, than the waves lashing around on me. Than the dogs licking me, and spitting me back out again. For all the horrible things that happened in that river, are far better than being squashed and kept as a trophy, in her collection of plants. Too many dead. Too many squashed.

I just want to be free…

  • For anyone interested in the random draw prize (goodie dye), please send me a message with how many points you're exchanging for 'ticket' entries. You can enter as few or as many points as you have within your balance (listed on the first post).

Just send the following information -- "I would like to exchange (insert #) of my points for an entry to the goodie dye draw."

I'll be putting the names into the generator tomorrow evening, so you have until approximately 7pm EDT to message me with that information. If I only get one message, then it's an obvious choice as to who receives it. If I don't get any messages at all, I'll put everyone (who has participated) in for it.

Also - if you were planning on participating in this prompt, you have a few hours left to submit it. I promise the next prompt will be a bit easier -- at least, it will be if you like giving your opinion vs. writing a longer story.

  • As I only received one entry for this prompt, she'll receive both the first and runner up prizes. :) Congrats to Rockie!

The following content belongs to Rock_N_Roll_Queen90 and may not be reproduced without her consent.

Matalia's skin felt like it was on fire. She slowly opened her eyes, afraid of what she'd encounter next. She quickly looked around, seeing only a beach. A beach? How did she get to a beach? It seemed as though it had only been moments ago, when she was being chased by a man - all because she stole an apple. She couldn't help that she was hungry! Then it all came flooding back. The fire, the deafening roar, the image of a large black and silver dragon! The story her mother told her, before she took her final breath flashed in her mind. She had told Matalia that for every other generation, a girl in their family would receive a dragon on her sixteenth birthday. She had then shakily slipped a charm bracelet onto Matalia's wrist, and passed on. Matalia still didn't know what had caused her mother's death, she was determined to find out though. She shook her head to try to focus on the problem at hand. She was on a beach but she didn't know how she got there. What about the dragon? Was it possible that the dragon had sent her here?
As she walked along the beach, Matalia started to get the feeling that she was completely alone. She was beginning to panic, wondering how she would get off this island, and what she could eat. What about shelter? Her bracelet was also driving her crazy! She could feel what could only be described as a pulse, emitting from the bracelet. That of course didn't make any sense - inanimate objects don't have pulses. She had tried taking it off, but the clasp wouldn't budge. She decided to sit down and look at the bracelet closer to see if there was a way to take it off. She had studied the bracelet for the past four years. She knew every detail on each little charm. There was a small heart, an oval shaped egg, and a charm that appeared to be the outline of a person. As she tried to find a way to remove the bracelet, she noticed the egg charm was no longer there! It had been replaced with a dragon charm. Was there a connection between the bracelet and the dragon she had seen? She looked closely at the new charm, there seemed to be writing on the back of it. Squinting her eyes, she read "Name Me". Matalia thought and thought of what name she could use for the little dragon charm. She wanted something elegant yet powerful. There were so many names that went through her mind, none of them felt right though. Then she remembered a story her mother had told her once. She couldn't remember all of it, just that there was a blacksmith with the last name of McKenna which meant "born of fire". Her inner being felt much stronger about that name, so she whispered "McKenna". She watched as the previous words faded away from the charm, and slowly "MCKENNA" replaced them. At that moment, the pulses got stronger.
In the distance Matalia heard a roar! It could almost be described as a scream. Her heart began to race, maybe she wasn't alone on this island after all. Thump thump thump. Her heart matched the sound of some distant thumping noise. Then she saw it. The dragon was flying towards her! The thumping was the sound of it's large, black wings beating the air. Though the appearance of the magical creature was menacing, Matalia didn't feel threatened. At that moment everything made sense. The bracelet was her connection to the dragon, that must be why the egg had turned into a dragon. Today was her sixteenth birthday. Her mother had been right. Matalia had received a dragon on her sixteenth birthday. The dragon gracefully landed on the beach, twenty feet away. They stared at each other for what seemed like hours. Matalia broke the tension first, "M-McKenna?" The dragon's facial expression turned to one of happiness as it heard its name for the first time. McKenna snorted through her nose excitedly, and walked up to Matalia. The large dragon lowered her nose to Matalia's face, and Matalia gently placed the small hand on the scaley nose. It felt as though a wave of warmth went through both girl and beast. McKenna gently pushed Matalia closer to her, then placed a wing over the girl like a tent. One moment Matalia could feel sand beneath her feet, the next she felt soft grass. McKenna removed her wing, and Matalia instantly recognized where they were. It was a small field on the farm her father owned. She looked towards the house, and there stood her father with tears in his eyes. "Papa!" Matalia cried out as she ran to him. "Oh my girl! I see you received your present from your ancestors today. There is much you must learn." He told her, then handed her a large book.
Matalia studied every word in that book her father had given her. She learned that her ancestors were strong warrior women. They took their dragons into battle when needed, and defeated the enemies quickly. It was now Matalia's turn to do the same with McKenna.

    Inspiration
Things are said, some which are wrong. Even the most perfect person in world could be wrong on a simple thing. Many paths are given to us to choose, but paths are for only us to choose. People may choose wrong, or right, some people may even choose up or down. Without choosing our own paths people wouldn't be who they are today. So if someone tells you to give up on a dream, look them dead in the eyes , and say I will prove you wrong. People will drag you down, maybe even tell lies, but only you know who you are, and what your dream is. Don't let anyone tell you, who you should be.

One point equals 500k.

As the interest in this has slacked for the past two prompts, whether due to the prompts itself or lack of time, I'm postponing the next prompt for an undetermined amount of time. I am aware that many individuals are graduating, preparing for college, out for summer break, or possibly going on vacation.

If you have interest in continuing, you may send prompt requests via PM or post. I've already received a request for a romance plot, so feel free to request others.
