I've created a monster!

...Not literally. I think >.>

I made a "homemade" dog toy the other day. It consists of a rope tied around a tree branch, with 3 dog toys connected to it. Nothing fancy, it's rather simple really. My Pit Bull/Lab mix is addicted to it O.O I can adjust the height of it, but for now I'm keeping it low since he has Pano (a disorder in which he grows too fast basically), so I don't want him straining his bones. Anyways, I can't believe how much he loves this freaking thing! He also is -in love- with one of those laser-pointer dog toy things. It's actually become a decent training tool. I've been trying to train him to stay in the yard, off leash. It was going good, but not as good as I wanted (he would find a scent and get distracted). So with the laser it keeps him near me better, plus I can let him run around the yard, chasing it.
Here's a couple of pics of him with his rope toy...
<a href="http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/7356/687848038302e09m3.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/7356/687848038302e09m3.jpg; - (He cheats and stands on the snow bank,lol)
<a href="http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/4470/687851575f06bcam3.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/4470/687851575f06bcam3.jpg; - (This was before I added on all the toys.)

I think I'm going to set up a "spring pole" for him. It's supposed to help build up muscle in the neck/shoulder area. I'm also looking into buying a "flirt pole", or just making one myself.
Does anybody have any other "homemade" dog toy ideas?

 • My dogs go insane for the spring pole and flirt pole. I made both of them. My flirt pole is made out of PVC pipe with a string through it and deer hide on the end.

Looks like Boss is having a blast and I love seeing dogs enjoy themselves!

As for other homemade toys... I don't have any other fancy ideas. I've made a ton of braided fleece tugs. But that's about it.
 • For the flirt pole, could you use something like a dressage crop/whip instead of a PVC pipe? It just seems like the PVC pipe would hurt if your dog accidentally got smacked with it. Or would the whip/crop snap in half, even with a medium dog that isn't that strong and a light toy.

You know, I've never hit the dogs with it but I got wacked in the face with it a time or two. It did hurt. A lot. I've seen a lot of people use lunge whips. But I'd think you're right. It doesn't seem as sturdy.
 • Hmm, maybe the PVC could be wrapped with pipe foam? (Like what the wrap around water heater pipes to insulate them). It's not really thick, but it probably wouldn't hurt as much if you were to get hit with it. As far as the dog possibly getting hurt, I would imagine all you'd have to do is make the bungee cord longer, if you ran into that problem.

Ooh fleece tugs are -such- a good idea Zag! I hate giving my dogs ropes because I don't like them eating the strands that come off. Picking up thousands of little pieces of rope isn't much for me either...lol.

 • Maybe a lunge whip would work better than a dressage whip, as they seem to be sturdier. Or possibly a buggy whip. I'll have to visit my local tack shop.

Another fun thing to do with fleece is gimp it. The rope is generally tougher and won't stretch as much when tugging. Plus, they seem to last longer.

Roonie (border collie/pit bull/something or another) loves playing with empty plastic bottles in socks. You could just give them the bottle without the sock, but I found that they tend to start stealing bottles and splashing the contents everywhere.

 • I have no idea what gimping is,lol. Off to google I go!

Yea, I used to do the soda bottle/sock thing. Then I noticed socks were missing, and found them shredded under the dog bed >.< lol Thanks for the idea though!
